Chapter 11. Analysis of Variance: One-Way ANOVA: FFT2073 Basic Statistics Tutorial

This document contains sample questions and problems related to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). It discusses the basic assumptions of one-way ANOVA, how to state the null and alternative hypotheses, when to use an ANOVA test, how to perform calculations to construct an ANOVA table from sample data, and how to use the results to test claims and draw conclusions about group means.

Chapter 11. Analysis of Variance:

One-way ANOVA
T11.1 There are five basic assumptions that must be fulfilled in order to perform a one-way
ANOVA test. What are they?

T11.2 State the null hypothesis for a one-way ANOVA test if there are four groups.

T11.3 State the alternative hypothesis for a one-way ANOVA test if there are three groups.
What can you conclude at the 5% level of significance?

T11.4 When do you use an ANOVA test?

T11.5 Groups of men from three different areas of the country are to be tested for mean
weight. The entries in the Table 1 are the weights for the different groups.

a) What is the Sum of Squares Factor?

b) What is the Sum of Squares Error?
c) What is the df for the numerator?
d) What is the df for the denominator?
e) What is the Mean Square Factor?
f) What is the Mean Square Error?
g) What is the F statistic?

T11.6 A product designer is testing the tensile strength of a new synthetic fiber that will be
used to produce cloth for women’s jackets. Strength is usually affected by the
percentage of cotton used in the blend of materials for the fiber. An experiment is
conducted with five levels of cotton content and replicated the experiment five times.
The data are shown in the following Table 2.

a) Identify the following items in this study.

i) Treatments
ii) Dependant variable
iii) Number of replications

b) Construct an analysis of variance (ANOVA) table.

c) Is there evidence to support the claim that cotton content affects the mean
tensile strength? Use α = 0.05

d) Use the Fisher LSD method to make comparisons between the pairs of means.
What conclusions can you draw?
