Psych Stats Worksheets DONE

This document contains 8 worksheets related to psychological statistics. Worksheet 1 asks to identify the level of measurement for variables like ethnic group, number of wrong mouse turns, and race finish position. Worksheet 2 involves organizing data about number of children in households into a frequency table and histogram. Worksheet 3 provides practice calculating z-scores. Worksheets 4-7 involve calculating measures of central tendency and variability, hypothesizing testing, analyzing correlations, and evaluating a research instrument measuring COVID-19 anxiety. The final worksheet evaluates the methodology, participants, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and conclusions of a study developing the COVID-19 Anxiety Syndrome Scale.

Worksheet #1 Levels of Measurement

Give the level of measurement for each of the following variables and illustrate through drawing:
a. ethnic group to which a person belongs
b. number of times a mouse makes a wrong turn in a laboratory maze, and
c. position a runner finishes in a race

Worksheet #2: Organizing Data

4. A particular block in a suburban neighborhood has 20 households. The number of children in

these households is as follows:

Tasks:
1. Make a frequency table

2. Create a histogram.

3. Describe the general shape of the distribution.

The distribution of the variables of the children in a neighborhood of 20 households is skewed
to the right, since the lower number of children are more realistic and unimodal having only one
peak.

Worksheet #3: Basics of Inferential Statistics

Question: On a measure of anxiety, the mean is 79 and the standard deviation is 12. What are the
Z scores for each of the following raw scores?
(a) 91, (b) 68, and (c) 103

Provide the answers below:

a. z = 1
b. z = -0.91667
c. z = 2

Worksheet #4. Measures of Variability

1. For the following scores, find the (a) mean, (b) median, (c) sum of squared deviations, (d)
variance, and (e) standard deviation:

2.13, 6.01, 3.33, 5.78

2. For the following scores, find the (a) mean, (b) median, (c) sum of squared deviations, (d)
variance, and (e) standard deviation:

6, 1, 4, 2, 3, 4, 6, 6

Provide your answers below:

Question Number 1:
a. Mean = 4.3125
b. Median = 4.555
c. Sum of squared deviations = 10.76368
d. Variance = 2.69
e. Standard deviation = 1.64

Question Number 2:
a. Mean = 4
b. Median = 4
c. Sum of squared deviations = 26
d. Variance = 3.25
e. Standard deviation = 1.8

Worksheet #5. Hypothesis Testing

For the following, (a) say which two populations are being compared, (b) state the research
hypothesis, (c) state the null hypothesis, and (d) say whether you should use a one-tailed or two-
tailed test and why.

H1: Do Canadian children whose parents are librarians score higher than Canadian children in
general on reading ability?

Provide your answers below:

a. Which two populations are being compared?

- Canadian children with librarian parents
- Canadian children without librarian parents

b. State the research hypothesis

-Research hypothesis: Children of librarians develop a higher reading ability.

c. State the null hypothesis

-There is no difference that children of librarians will have lower reading abilities

d. Say whether you should use a one-tailed or two-tailed test and why?
-Since we have a directional hypothesis, we should use a one-tailed test

Worksheet #6: Analyzing Correlation and Regression

Provide your answers below:

a. Draw a scatter diagram

b. Describe in words the general pattern of correlation,

Pattern: It has an erratic fissure pattern, with sudden rises and falls.

c. Figure the correlation coefficient

R= 0.8423

The COVID-19 anxiety syndrome scale: Development and psychometric properties

Link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7375349/

Task: Click and visit the link provided to answer the following questions:

1. Specify the purpose or aims of developing the COVID-19 anxiety syndrome scale.
The purpose of the COVID-19 anxiety syndrome scale is to widen the mental health
response during the pandemic by developing and evaluating a brief measure that could be
used to reliably identify the presence of anxiety syndrome features associated with
COVID-19.

2. Specify the methodology used.

-Examining the relevant literature
-Noting aspects of the anxiety syndrome identified in other measures
-Consulting Experts in the field
-Surveys and Questionnaires
-Previous Case studies

3. Who were the participants?

A total of 292 participants with 99 females and 193 males, resulting in roughly a 1:2
ratio of female to male participant. Based on Ethnicity by percentile division there were:
77.4% White, 9.6% Black, 8.6% Asian, 2.7% Mixed Race, and 1.7% Others.

4. Can you specify the end results of EFA and CFA of the COVID-19 anxiety syndrome
scale?
The End results were that the CFA had a covariance between the latent variables and
resulting in a “Mixed fit”, causing in the chi-square test to be “significant”. Therefore, the
parameter estimates had to be reviewed, and modification had to be made to re-calculate
and generate a more parsimonious measurement. By removing 2 items: #7 and 8, it

resulted in a Re-Specified model, which retained its covariance’s between latent variables
and its good fit of data which was demonstrated on each of the measures of fit. Overall it
resulted in the chi-square yielding “no significance” meaning it is an acceptable fit. This
new model yielded results demonstrating construct validity. Based on these results, the C-
19ASS was confirmed as having two correlated factors, perseveration, and avoidance.

5. What was the conclusion of the study?

Despite these above limitations, we believe that the Answer: “C-19ASS is a measure
that could prove useful in better understanding a developing COVID-19 anxiety
syndrome” and its impact on COVID-19 anxiety and functional impairment. It appears
the C-19ASS demonstrates acceptable levels of reliability and validity contributing,
independently of existing measures, to our growing understanding of the mental health
impact of COVID-19.
