AE 2861 Homework 4 F21 - Final
Point of clarification on the NACA charts illustrated on the next two pages: For the page with
the lift coefficient, that coefficient is measured on the scale connected by the red line; the
moment about the quarter chord is measured on the scale connected by the blue line. On the
next page the drag coefficient is measured on the scale connected by the orange line as a
function of the lift coefficient. The moment about the true aerodynamic center is measured on
the scale connected by the green line as a function of the lift coefficient.
1. (25 points) A NACA 2415 airfoil with chord = 2m is tested in a wind tunnel at standard sea-
level conditions (Free stream density = 1.225 kg/m3). The free stream velocity is 80 m/s.
The wing is at 6 degrees angle of attack. Calculate the lift, drag, and moment about the
quarter chord per unit span (the curve combined with the lift data). Assume that the
Reynolds number is 9 x 106 for reading the NACA chart data.
2. (25 points) Consider a rectangular wing mounted in a low-speed subsonic wind tunnel so
that the flow “sees” an effectively infinite wing. If the wing has a NACA 1412 airfoil section
and a 1-m span, a chord of 1.8 m, and a lift of 900N. The wind velocity is 30 m/s, density =
1.15 kg/m3. The Reynolds number is 6 x 106. Compute the angle of attack of the airfoil.
3. (25 points) The wing in problem 1 is pitched to an angle of 4 degrees, and the wind tunnel
force balance measures a lift force of 200N. What is CL, CM about the aerodynamic center
(the curve combined with the drag data), and CD? What is b, the span of the wing?
4. (25 points) A rectangular wing with a NACA 0009 airfoil section spans the 1-m wide test
section of a wind tunnel. The characteristics of this airfoil do not depend on Reynolds
number. The test-section airflow conditions are standard sea level with a velocity of 5 m/s.
The wing is at an angle of attack of 2 degrees and the wind tunnel force balance measures a
lift of 3 Nt. What is the chord of the wing?
