Homework 5

The document outlines five problems related to aerodynamics, focusing on calculations involving lift, drag coefficients, and airflow characteristics for various wing configurations. It includes specific parameters for NACA airfoils, tapered wings, rectangular wings, and laminar flow conditions. Additionally, it addresses thermal conditions for a symmetric wedge in turbulent flow at high Mach numbers.

Homework 5

Problem 1

NACA 23012 airfoil the slope is 0,1010/degree, and α L=0=−1 , 5° . Calculate the lift and
induced drag coefficients for this wing at a geometric angle of attack α =7 ° Considering a
finite wing using this airfoil, with AR=8 and taper ratio 0,8. Assume δ=τ , where δ=0. 05 2.

Problem 2

Consider a tapered wing. All the parameter is allowed to vary linearly from mid-span to
the wing-tips. At Mid-span data the chord is 3.048 m and at wing tip the chord is 1.524m.
At the mind-span the a0 = 5.5 per radian and the tip-span a0 = 5.8. At the mid-span the
absolute angle of attack is 5.8° and at the tip-span the absolute angle of attack is 3.8°. The
total span is of the wing is 12.9m. the Wing area S = C*b = 27.85m 2 and AR=5.33.

Obtain the aerofoil characteristics of the wing, the spanwise distribution of circulation
when is fying at 80 m/s. For the calculation use the absolute angle of attack, no consider
the zero lift angle of attack.

Problem 3

Consider an untwisted rectangular wing with chord of 1.2m and span of 6m flying with
angle of attact of α =4 ° .The airfoil is thin and symmetric along the wingspan and
Cdo=0,002. Determine the lift and induced drag coefficient. The airplane cruise speed is
200m/s and flying at altitude where the density is 0,98kg/m 3.Determine the power
needed to overcome the induced drag, induced angle of attack and velocity. Determine
the total drag if the aspect ratio is 9.

Problem 4

Air at 5°C and 13Kpa consider laminar flow plate at 800m/s. Estimate the adiabatic wall
temperature in °C and the heat transfer rate in W/m 2 at x=15cm if the wall temperature is
20°C.

Problem 5
The next figure shows a symmetric two-dimensional wedge of half angle of 10°. If the
wedge is well insulated, estimate its temperature assuming turbulent flow condition.
Consider the freestream conditions at Mach number is 3.0, temperature is 254Kand
pressure is 50KPa
