PART – A

I. Answer ALL the following questions. 10 x 1 = 10


1) What is the origin of the word ‘Physics’?
2) Mention the dimensional formula of velocity.
3) Draw the v-t graph for the body moving with uniform velocity.
4) Is displacement a vector or a scalar ?
5) State Newton’s third law of motion
6) If ⃗A. B
⃗ =0, then what is the angle between ⃗A & B
⃗.
7) What is the total external force on a system of particles when its total momentum is
constant.
8) What is the value of time period of a geostationary satellite in hours.
9) Mention the relation between linear velocity and angular velocity?
10) Define unit vector.

II. Answer any FIVE of the following questions. 5 x 2 = 10


11) Name the fundamental forces in nature.
12) Mention any two applications of dimensional analysis.
13) A ball is thrown vertically upward and it reaches a height of 90 m. Find the velocity
with which it was thrown.
14) Pick out the vector quantities among the following: Density, moment of force ,
temperature ,electric field.
15) State any two advantages of friction.
16) Distinguish between elastic collision & inelastic collision.
17) Define torque. Is it a vector or a scalar?
18) State and explain Newton’s law of gravitation.

21) Derive an expression for maximum height of a projectile
22) Prove the law of conservation of momentum.

23) A bullet of mass 50 g strikes a wooden plank with a velocity of 200 ms-1 and energy
out with a velocity of 50 ms-1. Calculate the work done by the bullet against the resistive
force offered by the plank.
24) State and explain perpendicular axis theorem.
25) Derive the relation between gravitational constant and acceleration due to gravity.
26) Starting from the definition of moment of inertia obtain an expression for moment of
inertia of a thin ring.

30) Prove that for a particle in rectilinear motion under constant acceleration the change in
kinetic energy of a particle is equal to the work done on it by the net force?
31) Show that torque is equal to rate of change of angular momentum of a particle.
32) Obtain an expression for escape speed for earth.

VI. Answer any THREE of the following questions. 3 x 5 = 15


33) A car moving along a straight highway with speed of 126 km/hr to brought to stop
within a distance of 200 m. What is the retardation of the car and how long does it take
for the car to stop?
34) A Pump on the ground floor of a building can pump up water to fill a tank of volume
30m-3 in in 15min if the tank is 40m above the ground, and the efficiency of the pump is
30% how much electric power is consumed by the pump?
35) (a) A child stands at the centre of a turn table with his arm outstretched. The turn table
is set rotating with an angular speed of 40 rev/min. how much is the angular speed of
the child, if he folds his hand back and thereby reduces his moment of inertia to 2/5
times the initial value? Assume that the turntable rotates without friction. (b) Show that
the child’s new K.E. of rotation is more than the initial K.E. of rotation.
36) Estimate the value of acceleration due to gravity at the peak of Mount Everest, which is
8848m above sea level. The value of g at sea level is 9.8ms-2 and the mean radius of the
earth is 6.37x106m.
37) A cricket ball is thrown at a speed of 28 m/s. in a direction 30° above the horizontal.
Calculate (a) the maximum height, (b) the time taken by the ball to return to the same
level, and (c) the distance from the thrower to the point where the ball returns to the
same level.
