PRE-TILING
1 Floor Surface clean and free of excess mortar and
concrete, hollows and bumps. Door thresholds set or
clearly marked. Drains clear - if a large area has slope
to drain been pre-set. Junction boxes set in floor sqaure
with room. Expansion joint of approved type and
correctly located.
2 Walls and Skirting Wallsrendered and scratched plumb.
RCC hacked for bonding or appropriate bonding coat.
3 Tiles Colour, sizes, patterns, shapes and type are as
approved.
4 Trim shapes Are appropriate for use and as required;
bullnose edges for thinset; radius edges for mortar set.
5 Mastergrade certificates Delivered with tile shipment.
GENERAL
6 Grout Type and colour is approved.
7 Tile colour Is uniform; shading of colour within
acceptable tolerances.
8 Layout As approved; generally no cuts smaller than half
tile size with cuts balanced and areas centered.
9 Pattern of layout, alignment of trim and site tile As
specified.
10 Tile joints Straight and true.
11 Tile surfaces True to plane, level and plumb.
12 Tile corners Flush or level with adjacent tile.
13 Tile edges On an even plane, smooth to touch.
14 Tile cuts Smooth without jagged or flaked edges.
15 Bonding Complete and sound.
16 Finished tile Free from pits, chips, cracks or scratches.
17 Grout Uniform in colour, tooled uniformly on cushion
edged tiles, flush to top of square edged tiles and
smooth without voids and is hard and durable.
18 Finished tile surface Cleaned of setting and grouting
materials; do not allow muriatic acid on glazed tile.
19 Finished tile Protected from damage.
20 Tile Properly spaced as required.
21 Glass-mesh mortar unit substrate Use conforms to
manufacturer’s specifications.
22 Sound-absorbing matting Use conforms to
manufacturer’s specifications.
23 Surface-applied accessories Fastened through tile by
drilling tile or grout joints without inducing cracks.
WALL TILE, MORTAR SET
24 Studs and furring Properly anchored and braced.
25 Backing for accessories and partitions In place.

surface, maximum 20mm thick, single or double back
coats.
29 Bond coat Cement paste on uncured mortar bed or
latex-portland-cement or dry set on cured mortar bed.

31 Built-in accessories Set and firmly anchored; aligned
with grout joints as required.
32 Tile Protected from movement, 48 hours after setting
and 48 hours after grouting; no work on opposite side of
wall.
WALL TILE, THINSET
33 Wall backing Properly secured and of specified type;
water resistant if gypsum board; surface sealed as
required; gypsum board penetrations caulked with
special sealant.
34 Setting materials As specified; organic adhesive on
gypsum board, dry set or latex-portland-cement on
gypsum board cementitious backer unit, masonry or
cured mortar bed.
35 Wall tile Set before floor tile.
36 Built-in accessories Set and firmly anchored; aligned
with grout joints as required.
37 Tile is protected from movement 48 hours after setting
and 48 hours after grouting; no work on opposite side of
wall.
FLOOR TILE
38 Non-slip tile Provided for required areas.
39 Masonry thresholds or metal edge bars Set to finish
grade.
40 Floor drains Set to finish grade at low point.
41 Floor and/or mortar bed Uniformly sloped to drain as
required.
42 Expansion joints Are located and of type as required.
43 Substrate Clean and dry; without bumps and hollows for
thinset application.
44 Waterproof membrane or cleavage membrane Properly
installed for mortar bed application.
45 Mortar bed Properly reinforced.
46 Mortar bed for plastic bed Installed as work progresses;
ensure excessive bed is not placed to avoid initial set.
47 Bond coat Cement paste on plastic mortar bed; dry set
or latex-portland-cement on cured mortar bed or
concrete; organic adhesive on concrete or plywood;
epoxy on cured mortar bed, concrete or plywood.
48 Tile is tamped in To assure good bond; excess bond
coast immediately removed before set up.
49 If epoxy grouted Tile is wax coated on face; ensure no
wax on back or edges.
50 Tile is protected from traffic and dirt 48 hours after
setting and 48 hours after grouting.
