One twilight a girl with a large-meshed veil over her face was busy reading while sitting in a
bench of park. When she turned a page, the book slipped from her hand and a young man pounce upon
it. The young man introduced himself then told the girl that he had his eyes on her since the other day.
The young man is Mr. Parkenstacker. He introduced himself and asked the lady’s name.
Unfortunately, instead of telling her she bragged about herself and told the man how rich she was and
how she lives a dull and boring life because of her riches. She further told the man that if she were to
choose a husband, she would rather choose a man of lowly stature. With this, the young man told the
girl that he works in restaurant as a cashier in a nearby restaurant. Having a surprised look at her face,
the girl looked at her watch and suddenly became in a hurry.
Mr. Parkenstacker offered the girl a walk, but the girl insisted on walking home alone.
Suddenly, a waitress came yelling at the rich girl telling her that she’s late for her shift in the
restaurant. The rich girl denied that she knew the waitress, so the waitress became more furious. As the
waitress raised her voice, the young man captured the attention of the waitress. Recognizing that the
young man as the most sought bachelor in town because of his wealth and charm, the waitress
apologized. The rich girl found out that Mr. Parkenstacker is not poor but rather rich.
Embarrassed on what she had done, the young girl continued walking away, leaving Mr.
Parkenstacker standing in the park. The waitress then continued following the girl while yelling at her
to dress up for her late shift. Suddenly a driver approached the man, and told him that he is already late
for his dinner reservation on the restaurant where the girl is working.

MAKING CONNECTIONS
You might have not noticed, but your previous experiences, knowledge, emotions, and
understanding affect what and how you learn (Harvey & Goudvis, 2000). Called the schema, your
background knowledge and experiences actually help you make sense and meaning of the material
you are exposed to. Learning how to access these prior knowledge, experiences, emotions, and
opinions can help you make a connection to the text to help you understand concepts better.
Keene and Zimmerman (1997, as cited in Kardash, 2004) concluded that students like you
comprehend better when you make different kinds of connections.
These three (3) connections include the following:
text-to-self- are actually personal connections that you make between yourself and the selection
you are dealing with.
text-to-text- are connections where you relate one material to another that you have read or
have already come across.
text-to-world- are the larger connections that a reader brings to a reading situation including our
perception of the world which might vary since we have various sources of learning things beyond
personal experiences (e.g. television, radio, magazines, articles, movies, etc.)
