SIGN RULES For Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division

This document outlines the sign rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of signed numbers. It states that for multiplication and division, if the signs are the same the result is positive, and if they are different the result is negative. For addition, the magnitudes of the numbers should be added or subtracted depending on their signs, and the sign of the final result depends on the sign of the number with the larger magnitude. For subtraction, it can be converted to addition by changing the subtraction sign to addition and flipping the sign of the second number.

SIGN

RULES  for  Addition,  Subtraction,  Multiplication  and  Division

For Multiplication and Division: If the signs are the same the result is positive.
If the signs are different the result is negative.

Multiplication examples:

POS × POS = POS NEG × NEG = POS POS × NEG = NEG NEG × POS = NEG
(2)(3) = 6 (-2)(-3) = 6 (2)(-3) = -6 (-2)(3) = -6

Division examples:

POS NEG POS NEG

= POS = POS = NEG = NEG
POS NEG NEG POS
6 −6 6 −6
=2 =2 = −2 = −2
3 −3 −3 3

Addition: Note that the magnitude of a signed number is the same as its absolute value.

When adding a positive number and a positive number:

Add the magnitudes.
7 + 4 = 11 Result is positive.

When adding a negative number and a negative number:

Add the magnitudes.
− 7 + (− 4) = −11 (7+4=11, result is negative) Result is negative.

When adding a positive number and a negative number:

Subtract the smaller
− 7 + 4 = −3 (7-4=3, the result is negative from the -7) magnitude from the
larger. The sign of the
7 + (− 4) = 3 (7-4=3, the result is positive from the 7) result is the same as the
number that had the
larger magnitude.

Subtraction: Change the subtraction sign to addition, and flip the sign of the second number.
Then add the numbers. (This is the definition of subtraction or two-stroke rule.)

7−4 becomes 7 + (− 4) = 3

− 7 − (− 4) becomes − 7 + 4 = −3

−7−4 becomes − 7 + (− 4) = −11

7 − (− 4) becomes 7 + 4 = 11 (The subtraction examples became the addition examples.)
