• Which takes place across more than 30 departments. The hospital is known for its
treatment in areas that include cancer, digestive disorders, neurological issues,
heart disease, orthopedics, transplantation, urologic diseases and trauma care.
• Founded in 1811, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the third
oldest hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest
hospital in New England.

Urban Response • The exterior of the building is a formal response to the
horizontal and vertical nature of the adjacent Yawkey and
White buildings, respectively—creating a visual language
that fits with the surrounding urban context.

Made Quiet. Made Better. • Elevators, public waiting areas, and staff
meeting rooms are located along the
central circulation spine away from the
patient rooms.
• Large, sliding glass doors to patient rooms provide greater visibility and allow
natural light to enter the corridors, while keeping the noise out when closed.
• NBBJ redesigned the
fourth floor to fit the new
three-room suite by
incorporating one of the
existing ORs with an
adjacent MRI bay, and
relocating a restroom and
some storage space.
• In advance of the latest technology, the hallway that was used to transport the MRI in and out of the building was designed
with larger beams and more reinforcing steel to withstand the load of the IMRI machine. The exterior wall at one end of the
corridor was built in a modular fashion so it could be easily removed to hoist new equipment through the wall during
installation and for future replacement.

Water Conservation
Low-flow plumbing fixtures were installed to reduce water consumption by 1.4
million gallons per year (20%). To eliminate the use of potable water for plant
irrigation, systems capture rainwater and air cooling condensate for irrigation.
Energy Conservation
The exterior glazing system minimizes heat gain and loss while allowing daylight
to enter. This system improves thermal performance by 39% and reduces
baseline solar heat gain by 31%. The design achieves an overall reduction of
energy demand by 10%.
Healthy Indoor
Air Interior finishes and furnishings are free of volatile organic compounds. An
enhanced ventilation system maintains a constant supply of clean, healthy air.

Design concept
• The two hospitals have been designed on the concept of 'Form
Follows Function' as in this case inter-relationships of
departments within a floor and in between floors becomes
paramount for their efficient functioning.
• Easy and unhindered movement of patients, doctors and visitors is
• Distinct entries and parking for doctors, visitors and service
of prime importance in the functioning of any hospital.
personnel have been provided
Corridor at out patient dept.
Entrance lobby
• Internally a system of corridors connects
vertical movement cores strategically located
at all corners as well as in the middle.
Ramp
The planning grid of both the buildings has been based on 6600 x 6600
mm with 3000 mm for internal corridor space.
It can accommodate a six-bedded general ward in one unit, a four-
bedded special ward with attached washroom or two reasonable sized
rooms for doctors, nurses/staff change rooms, etc.
It was established under the PMSSY project in 2012.
The Department has 2 major and 1 minor operation
theatre. 24 hour laboratory and blood bank services
are present in the same building.
emergency block
• There are about 40 wards, which are classified as General Wards, Intensive
Care units, Post Operative Wards and Special Rooms.
• The façade of the building is interspersed with transparent
and opaque elements composed of large glass panels and
solid shafts. The two-tone grit finish, created using Dholpur
and Jaisalmer stone not only provide a permanent finish,
but also gives the hospital a sharp look while creating an
array of clean lines throughout the elevation.
