MATH 1 Week 5

This document is a mathematics module for second quarter week 5 taught by Ms. Charity Myrh P. Arzaga. It covers understanding the concept of subtraction. The objectives are to define subtraction, identify the parts of a subtraction equation, terms that mean subtraction, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Examples are provided to illustrate subtracting numbers and using a number line. Practice problems are included for students to complete.

Verse of the week: ”Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His
greatness is unsearchable.”

- Psalm 145:3 (KJV)

LESSON 1 understanding concept of
subtraction
Objectives: In this lesson, you are expected to:
 Define subtraction
 Identify the parts of a subtraction equation
 Identify other terms that mean subtraction
 Explain the relationship between addition and subtraction

Lesson Proper
LET’S SAY
On Sheena’s birthday, 18 cups of ice cream
are served. She has 4 friends who take a cup
of ice cream each.
How many of her friends have taken their
ice creams?
How many cups of ice cream are left on the
table?
To find the number cups of ice cream left,
we can subtract or take away the number of cups of ice cream taken by
Sheena’s friends from the total number.
Taking away a number from another number is known as
subtraction. 18 - 4
18 minuend
We write 18 - 4 = 14 or - 4 subtrahend
14 difference
The number from which we subtract is called the minuend.
The number which we subtract is called subtrahend.
The answer in subtraction is called the difference.

Let us compare these two number sentences.

1. 18 - 4 = 14
2. 14 + 4 = 18
The minuend in the in number sentence 1 becomes the sum in
number sentence 2.

MATHEMATICS 1 │ PAGE 1 SECOND QUARTER

The subtrahend and the difference in number sentence 1 become the
addends in number sentence 2.
This shows that subtraction is the opposite of addition.
We can also use a number line to count backwards to get the
difference.
Let’s count four steps backwards from 18.

Let’s Remember
 Subtraction is the process of taking away one number from another
 Minuend is the first number which is usually the larger, from which
the subtrahend is subtracted.
 Subtrahend is the number to be subtracted.
 Difference is the answer in subtraction.
 Minus sign ( - ) is the symbol used in subtraction.
 Subtraction and addition are inverse or opposite operations

LET’S TRY
A. Color the number of objects to be subtracted to help you find
the answers.

1. 7 - 2 =

2. 18 - 5 =

3. 15 - 4 =
