LET’S SAY
On Sheena’s birthday, 18 cups of ice cream
are served. She has 4 friends who take a cup
of ice cream each.
How many of her friends have taken their
ice creams?
How many cups of ice cream are left on the
table?
To find the number cups of ice cream left,
we can subtract or take away the number of cups of ice cream taken by
Sheena’s friends from the total number.
Taking away a number from another number is known as
subtraction. 18 - 4
18 minuend
We write 18 - 4 = 14 or - 4 subtrahend
14 difference
The number from which we subtract is called the minuend.
The number which we subtract is called subtrahend.
The answer in subtraction is called the difference.

Subtraction is the process of taking away one number from another
Minuend is the first number which is usually the larger, from which
the subtrahend is subtracted.
Subtrahend is the number to be subtracted.
Difference is the answer in subtraction.
Minus sign ( - ) is the symbol used in subtraction.
Subtraction and addition are inverse or opposite operations
