Liquid Hydraulic Expansion - PSV

This document provides calculations for the sizing of relief devices to protect against thermal expansion of trapped liquids in hydraulic expansion systems. It presents equations from industry standards to calculate the volumetric flow rate and cubic expansion coefficient based on initial and final temperatures, densities, heat capacity, specific gravity, and total heat input. The calculations determine a volumetric flow rate of 0.000135 m3/s (0.4876 m3/h) and a cubic expansion coefficient of 0.4958 1/°C for a system with a total heat input of 395.44 W. Pipe segment details and heat inputs are also listed.

Hydraulic Expansion

Total Heat Input Q = 395.44 W

Equations from API 521/ISO 23251:2007, Section 5.14, Hydraulic Expansion.

For liquid full systems expansion rates for the sizing of relief devices that protect against thermal expansion of the trapped
liquids can be approximated using the following equations. This does not account for the vapourisation of liquids.

BQ m3/s
V 
1000 S g C p

2 2
1   2
B
2(T2  T1 ) 1  2

V = volumetric flowrate at flowing temperature

B = cubic expansion coefficient
T1 = initial temperature of fluid at blocked in pressure = 47.86 °C
T2 = final temperature of fluid at relieving pressure = 47.91 °C
ρ1 = initial density = 506.50 kg/m3
ρ2 = final density = 494.10 kg/m3
Cp = specific heat capacity of trapped fluid = 2,858.00 J/kgK
Sg = specific gravity at final conditions = 0.5065
Q = total heat transfer rate = 395.44 W

B = 0.4958 1/°C

V = 0.000135 m3/s
= 0.4876 m3/h
= 240.9067 kg/h
