Learnin G Activity Sheets For: Comp Uter 3

This document provides a learning activity sheet about computer storage. It contains three activities to help students identify computer parts involved in storage operations, classify different storage devices as main or secondary memory, and define key computer memory terms. The document explains that computer memory includes main memory like RAM and ROM, as well as secondary storage devices like hard disks, CDs, DVDs, and flash drives. It provides background information and learning objectives to introduce students to computer storage concepts.

Lesson 1-Introduction to Computer and History
1.7 Identifying the Parts of the Computer

-1.9 Describing the Storage Operation

Background Information for Learners

In this learning activity sheet, you will learn about the different parts of the computer specifically those that
are doing the storage operation.

Learning Competencies- At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

 Identify the parts of the computer specifically those that are doing the storage operation.

Computer Concepts

Computer’s memory is one of the most important parts of the computer. The memory of a human being is
like the memory of the computer, it can remember a lot of information. There are two types of computer memory ,
the main memory and secondary memory.

TYPES OF MAIN MEMORY

ROM (Read-only Memory) - memory read at high speed

but not capable of being changed by program
instructions

2
RAM (Random-Access Memory) – chips can remember
whatever you tell them and can even change, to
remember new information. However, when the
computer is turned off, RAM forgets everything.

TYPES OF SECONDARY MEMORY

Secondary memory (backup device)—supports the main memory. You can store data and information in it for
future use.

Hard disk- it is the main storage device that

can be found inside the System Unit. It has
a bigger capacity so you can store a large
amount of data.

Compact disc(CD)- It is a portable disc that you can carry anywhere. It is less expensive than that hard disk.

Types of Compact Discs

CD –ROM (Compact Disc-Read Only Memory)-It can only read information. You won’t be able to add new information in it.

CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable)- This type

of CD will allow you to store files only once.

CD-RW (Compact Disc-Rewritable)- unlike

the CD-R, CD-RW will allow you to store
files many times.

3
DVD ( Digital Versatile Disc )- It is essentially a bigger
and faster CD that can hold video better than a CD. It
can also hold audio, still photos and computer data

Flash Disk – known as USB (Universal Serial Bus), flash

drive or memory stick. It much bigger in capacity than
a compact disc , smaller in size, and performs better.

Activity 1- Name the following parts of computer involved in storage operations.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Activity 2-Write MM if the storage device belongs to the main memory and SM if it belongs to secondary
memory.
______6. RAM ______7. Flash disk _______8. CR-RW _______9. DVD _______10. ROM

Activity 3- Identify the following. Write the correct answer on your paper.

______________11. RAM stands for_____________.

______________12. This is the memory where information cannot be changed.

______________13. ROM stands for_____________.

______________14. It is known as the backup device.

______________15. This is a round and flat plate storage device.
