it. Which of the following materials should not be considered for building a chair?

a) Plastic b) Wood

c) Glass d) Metal

8. Four baskets filled with different objects were placed in front of a classroom. Each

student was asked to compress the objects to examine the hardness or softness and

arrange them in order from hardest to softest. The contents of the four baskets were:

1. Styrofoam 3. Wooden blocks

2: Flour dough 4. A bunch of cotton

What would be the correct order?

a) 3, 1, 2, 4 b) 3, 1, 4, 2

C) 2, 3, 4, 1 d) 2, 3, 1 , 4

II. Answer the following: -

1. Define the term Sorting. List two advantages of grouping materials.

Sorting is defined as the systematic arrangement of things on the basis of certain similarities
and differences. Two advantages of grouping materials are:

a) Grouping materials helps us to locate things easily.

b) It also helps to study the specific properties of different materials easily.

2. A cooking utensil is made up of a metal and not paper. Give reason.

A cooking material is made up of a metal and not paper because

I) The cooking material should not catch fire itself.

II) It should provide sufficient heat to the food for cooking.

3. Give examples of objects that are made up of different kinds of materials.

Objects that are made up of different kinds of materials are:

A) Chair: made up of wood, plastic, metal.

B) Toys: made up of Plastics, wood

C) Bag: made up of Leather, Cloth, Plastic

4.Based on your observation of the picture given below, answer the following questions.

a) What has happened to the iron nails here in the picture?

The iron nails were earlier having lustre or shine but now they turn dull, lose their shine and
rusting has taken place. It has developed a reddish brown covering on it.

b) What do you think is the reason for the above change in the appearance of the iron nails?

When iron nails are exposed to air or moisture, then due to the action of air or moisture, they
tend to lose their shine and become dull, rusting takes place.

c) Name any two metals which have lustre.

Gold, Silver, Iron, Aluminium have lustre in them.

5. Differentiate and give two examples for each. (Use a T-chart).

a) Transparent and Opaque objects.

b) Miscible and immiscible liquids

c) Soluble and Insoluble substances

A. Transparent Objects Opaque Objects
1. Materials through which things can be seen 1. Materials through which things cannot be
clearly. seen.

2. Light can pass completely through 2.Light cannot pass through opaque objects.
transparent objects.

Examples: Glass, Clear water, Plastic, Air Examples: Wood, Book, Cardboard, Metals

B. Miscible Liquids Immiscible Liquids

1. Liquids which get completely mixed with 1. Liquids which do not mix with water and form
water. a separate layer when kept aside for some time.

Examples: Vinegar and Lemon juice in water Examples: Coconut oil and Kerosene in water

C. Soluble Substances Insoluble Substances

1. These substances completely dissolve or 1. These substances do not dissolve or
disappear in water. disappear in water even after stirring for a long
time.

Examples: Salt and Sugar in water Examples: Sand, Chalk powder, Sawdust in
water

6. What phenomenon is shown by the given pictures? Explain the reason for this property of materials.

The phenomenon of Floatability or Sink ability (floating and sinking)is shown by the given
pictures.

A substance with a density lower than that of water floats in water, whereas a substance with a
density higher than that of water sinks at the bottom.
A plastic ball, a feather, a piece of wood, ice etc float in water as their density is less than water,
whereas a stone, a metal coin, a metal key, a spoon etc will sink in water as they are more denser
than water.

7. Observe the given pictures and answer the following:

a) On the basis of your observation, mention at least three properties that these materials have in
common.

Three properties that the materials have in common are

i)All these three materials have shine in them and therefore are classified under lustrous
materials.

ii)All these materials have got a smooth texture.

iii)These materials can be broken into thin sheets and can be drawn into wires.

b) The above materials are all made up of metals

c) The Aluminium foil used to wrap food items shows a unique property of metals. Name the property.

This property of Aluminium metal that it can be beaten into very thin sheets leading to the
formation of a foil is called as Malleability.

8. Ram and Shyam, both friends, opened a new grocery shop. They bought many materials from the main
market. Shyam arranged all items systematically based on their similarities and differences. Ram did not
arrange the items. He just put them randomly according to the available space in his shop.

a) Who do you think will be able to locate things in their shop easily-Ram or Shyam? Why?

Shyam will be able to locate things easily because he has arranged items systematically in his
shop.
