A B
3. Which pair of substances among the following would float in a tumbler half filled with water?
c) Metals are poor conductors of electricity d) Most metals are hard to compress
5. The gas dissolved in water is important for the survival of animals and plants that live in
water.
c) Hydrogen d) Nitrogen
6. Match the objects given below with the materials from which they could be made.
OBJECTS MATERIALS
A) Tumbler i) Leather
7.An ordinary chair requires a strong structure to support the weight of a person sitting on
it. Which of the following materials should not be considered for building a chair?
a) Plastic b) Wood
c) Glass d) Metal
8. Four baskets filled with different objects were placed in front of a classroom. Each
student was asked to compress the objects to examine the hardness or softness and
arrange them in order from hardest to softest. The contents of the four baskets were:
a) 3, 1, 2, 4 b) 3, 1, 4, 2
C) 2, 3, 4, 1 d) 2, 3, 1 , 4
Sorting is defined as the systematic arrangement of things on the basis of certain similarities
and differences. Two advantages of grouping materials are:
4.Based on your observation of the picture given below, answer the following questions.
The iron nails were earlier having lustre or shine but now they turn dull, lose their shine and
rusting has taken place. It has developed a reddish brown covering on it.
b) What do you think is the reason for the above change in the appearance of the iron nails?
When iron nails are exposed to air or moisture, then due to the action of air or moisture, they
tend to lose their shine and become dull, rusting takes place.
2. Light can pass completely through 2.Light cannot pass through opaque objects.
transparent objects.
Examples: Glass, Clear water, Plastic, Air Examples: Wood, Book, Cardboard, Metals
Examples: Vinegar and Lemon juice in water Examples: Coconut oil and Kerosene in water
Examples: Salt and Sugar in water Examples: Sand, Chalk powder, Sawdust in
water
6. What phenomenon is shown by the given pictures? Explain the reason for this property of materials.
The phenomenon of Floatability or Sink ability (floating and sinking)is shown by the given
pictures.
A substance with a density lower than that of water floats in water, whereas a substance with a
density higher than that of water sinks at the bottom.
A plastic ball, a feather, a piece of wood, ice etc float in water as their density is less than water,
whereas a stone, a metal coin, a metal key, a spoon etc will sink in water as they are more denser
than water.
a) On the basis of your observation, mention at least three properties that these materials have in
common.
i)All these three materials have shine in them and therefore are classified under lustrous
materials.
iii)These materials can be broken into thin sheets and can be drawn into wires.
c) The Aluminium foil used to wrap food items shows a unique property of metals. Name the property.
This property of Aluminium metal that it can be beaten into very thin sheets leading to the
formation of a foil is called as Malleability.
8. Ram and Shyam, both friends, opened a new grocery shop. They bought many materials from the main
market. Shyam arranged all items systematically based on their similarities and differences. Ram did not
arrange the items. He just put them randomly according to the available space in his shop.
a) Who do you think will be able to locate things in their shop easily-Ram or Shyam? Why?
Shyam will be able to locate things easily because he has arranged items systematically in his
shop.
Ram seems to be careless, lazy and inexperienced whereas Shyam seems to be active,
professional and intelligent.
