Lab#25 - IB (Energy Station 1 - Bouncing Ball NGSS)
Procedure
Hold a ball at shoulder height and release it. Observe its motion and other properties as it
falls, hits the floor and then rises back up again.
1. The diagram at right is a snapshot of your ball’s motion. State the type of energy that the ball
possesses at each lettered snapshot. (8 pts)
(Just as the ball is released)

its compression)
2. How can you tell that the ball “lost” some of its initial energy? (2 pts)
3. Is this energy really lost? Explain in terms of a transfer AND a transformation of this “missing”
energy? (4 pts)

Procedure
Now you are going to take some data to determine the actual amount of energy that is “lost”
when the ball bounces off the floor.
Discuss with your partner an appropriate method for collecting data.
Record any necessary data in the space below, appropriately labeled and including units and
uncertainties.
Show all calculations below to determine the energy “lost” when your ball bounced off the floor.

Post Lab Questions
1. Calculate the speed of the ball when it hit the floor. (snapshot D) (5 pts)
2. Calculate the speed of the ball when it rebounded off the floor. (snapshot F) (5 pts)
3. Determine the change in momentum of the ball due to its bounce off the floor (from snapshot
D to F). (5 pts)
4. Determine the impulse that the floor applies to the ball. (2 pts)
5. Determine the impulse that the ball applies to the floor. (2 pts)
6. Compare the force that the floor applies to the ball with the force that the ball applies to the
floor during the bounce. (2 pts)
