1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure safe working conditions during
excavation job.

2.0 Scope

This procedure is applicable at all our project sites, stores, plants.

3.0 Procedure

Operational Supervisory
1 General: Contractor Construction
Before work commences for excavations, Engineer/
following actions shall be initiated: In charge
 Stability of the ground shall be checked;
 Position of all underground services such as
sewers, water pipes, and electric cables shall
be identified;
 In case there is danger gas, water electrical and
other public utilities shall be shut off or
disconnected;
 If underground pipes and conductors cannot
be removed or disconnected, they shall be
fenced off or otherwise protected against
damage.
2 During Work: Contractor Construction
Engineer/
 A competent person nominated by the Site
In charge
In charge shall examine excavation at least
once every day prior to start of shift.
 Sides of the excavation shall be thoroughly
inspected:
o after an interruption of work of more than
one day;
o after every blasting operation;
o after an unexpected fall of excavated
face;
o after substantial damage to supports;
o after heavy rain or storm;

o When boulder formations are


encountered.
 Safe means of access and egress shall be
provided to every place.
 Ladders shall extend from the bottom to at
least 1 meter above the ground with suitable
landings.
 When ground does not ensure a safe foothold,
adequate support shall be provided.
 No ground shall be undermined/
cave formatted and used without adequate
support.
3 When loose masses or large boulders and Contractor Construction
rocks are encountered: Engineer
 They shall be removed as soon as practicable
from above;
 Workers shall leave and keep out of danger
zone until it is safe to return.
 When workers are working at different
levels, adequate means, such as staging, shall
be provided to prevent persons below from
being struck by tools or other objects falling
from above.
 The entire area shall be suitably barricaded.
 No material shall be placed or stacked near
the edge of any excavation so as to endanger
persons employed below.
 No load, plant or equipment shall be placed
or moved near the edge of any excavation
where it would be likely to cause a collapse
of the side of the excavation and thereby
endanger any person.
4 Support of excavation work: Contractor Construction
Engineer
 Sides of excavations shall be made safe by
sloping, shoring, benching, portable shields
or other effective means if the soil is soft.

 Timber and other supports like sheets, plates


and wooden planks shall only be erected,
substantially altered or dismantled under the
supervision/ permission of a competent
person.
