FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the I EC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the National
Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an inte rnational consensus of opinion
on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for inte rnational use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
3) In order to promote international unification, the I EC expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt the text of
the I EC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence between the I EC
recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
PREFACE
This standard has been prepared by Sub-Committee 20A: High-voltage Cables, of I EC Technical
Committee No. 20: Electric Cables.
It forms Part 1 of IEC Publication 885.
This part is a re-edition of Clause 16 of I EC Publication 540: Test Methods for Insulations and Sheaths
of Electric Cables and Cords (Elastomeric and Thermoplastic Compounds).
Part 1 (Publication 885-1) and Pa rt 2 (Publication 885-2) regroup the electrical test methods for electric
cables.
I EC Publications 885-1 and 885-2 in conjunction with the series of I EC Publication 811: Common
Test Methods for Insulating and Sheathing Materials of Electric Cables, replace IEC Publication 540.

1. Scope
The electrical test methods described in this standard are given as a guide to be followed for
testing wires, cords and cables in case the relevant cable standard does not prescribe a different
electrical test method.
The electrical tests are applicable only to:
— unsheathed wires, cords and cables;
— cores taken from complete sheathed cords and cables,
all having a maximum rated voltage up to and including 450/750 V
