Part I: Illustrate by example and prove [6 pts]

Proof:
If a І b → b = ar, r Є Z and
b І c → c = bq, q Є Z
so, bx+cy= (ar)x+(bq)y
=a(rx+qy) and rx+qy is an integer
Therefore, a І bx + cy ■

Part II: Modified True or False: Write TRUE if the statement is true, explain by citing
a theorem or a property. If the statement is false, write FALSE and explain or give
a counterexample. [3 pts each]

1. 9 divides 3
- FALSE, since 3 = 9(1/3), 1/3 is not Є of Z.
2. Larger integers have more factors than a smaller integers

- FALSE, for some of the larger integer is a prime number their only factor pair are
1 and itself. For example 937 is a larger number, but it’s also a prime number.

3. If 56|34m 02n, then n can take a value of 8.

4. If the sum of the digit of an even number is divisible by 9, the number is divisible by
18.

- TRUE, divisibility test of 9 is that sum of all the digits is divisible by 9. Hence
test of divisibility of 18 is that unit digit is even. It is either 0,2,4,6 or 8 and
simultaneously sum of the digits is divisible by 9.

5. The largest prime number less than 100 is 87.


- FALE, there are 25 Prime numbers before 100 They are 2, 3,5,7, 11, 12,17, 19,
23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43,47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89,97 Therefore the
largest prime number Before 100 is 97.
6. The integer 953 is prime.

- TRUE, 953 is a prime it can only be factor to 1 and the number itself.

7. 31 is a Mersenne prime.
- FALSE, Mersenne prime is a number expressed in the form 2P-1 where p is
Prime.Since, 31 is not of the form 2P – 1, p is prime, 31 is not a Mersenne Prime.
8. The integer 19 is a Fermat's prime.
- FALSE, because Fermat’s prime can be expressed in the form of Fm=2²^m+1,
m>0. Since, 19 is not Fermat’s prime.
