CABINAS - M1-Problem Set 2 Problem Solving

1. The marathon player had an average speed of 27.5 km/h for his two-way trip based on running 7 km at 30 km/h for the first trip and returning at 25 km/h. 2. Annabelle's final grade for the course was 87.95% based on her scores on 5 short exams, a major project, and a long exam which together made up her final grade per the professor's criteria. 3. For John to increase his average score from 82 to 85 across 5 exams, he needs to score 97 on the additional exam.

BSA_3 Statistical Analysis with Software Application

Module 1-Problem Set 2: Problem Solving

Read and analyze the following statistical problems. Then answer the questions that follow for each of
the items given.

1. Suppose a marathon player covers 7 kilometers with a speed of 30 kilometer per hour in a race for his
one-way trip. During the return trip, his speed decelerates to 25 km per hour. Find the average speed of
the marathon player for his two-way trips in a race. (10 points)

No. of Trip 1 2
Speed 30 25 Average speed 27.5

X= 30+25/2
=55/2
=27.5

2. A course professor rated his students on 5 different short exams, major projects, and long
examinations. Each short test is worth 5% of the final grade while the projects count 35% of the final
grade. The long examination composed the remaining 40% of the final grade. Annabelle had scores in
her 5 short examinations, 95, 90, 80, 75, 85. Her major projects had a rating of 90 while her long
examination score was 88. Determine Annabelle’s final grade for the course. (10 points)

95 90 80 75 85
short exams 5% each 4.75 4.5 4 3.75 4.25 21.25
90
Major Project 35% 31.5
88
Long exams 40% 35.2
FINAL GRADE 87.95
3. After taking a series of 4 classroom examinations, John obtained a mean score of 82. How much score
John has to get in another examination to increase his score average score to 85? (10 points)

No. of exam 4 5
MEAN SCORE 82 85 target score 97

82x4=328
5 5
328+x = 85
5

328+x=425
x=425-328
x=97

4. Consider the data of a businessman that accumulates the daily sales of his restaurant
business during the 10-day period. The data are shown below.

Php 18,500     Php 23,600     Php 21,210     Php 14,515     Php 20,500
Php 21,700     Php 14,250     Php 18,345     Php 28,550     Php 32,220

Obtain the mean, range, and sample standard deviation of the given data set. Then interpret
the resulting measures by giving impressions for the single values.
