2. (a) The diagram below shows the line segment which passes through the points A and B.

Determine

(b) An electrician charges a fixed fee for a house visit plus an additional charge based on
the length of time spent on the job.

The total charges, y, are calculated using the equation y = 40 x + 75 , where x


represents the time in hours spent on the job.

3. The graph of the quadratic function y = x2 for  4 < x < 4 is shown below.

(a) The coordinates of the points M and N are (- l, y) and (x, 9) respectively.

integer values of x from – 2 to 4.

(c) Using your graph, estimate the value of y when x = 3.5. Show on your graph how the
value was obtained. (2 marks)

(d) Without further calculations,

(i) write the equation of the axis of symmetry of the graph (1 mark)

(ii) estimate the minimum value of the function y (1 mark)

(iii) state the values of the solutions of the equation: x2 – 2x – 3 = 0. (1 mark)
