MODULE No. 1 (LESSON 1: POSSESSIVE NOUNS)

Discussion:
POSSESSIVE NOUNS- indicate ownership or possession

RULES IN FORMING POSSESSIVE NOUNS:

1. To show ownership, we add an apostrophe and s (‘s) to the owner’s


name.

Examples: John’s jacket


Marie’s dress

EXERCISE 1
Write an apostrophe and s (‘s) after each noun to show possession.

1. Tim ___ truck

2. Dora ___ map

3. Anna ____ crown

2. We used the word “whose” when asking about ownership.

Examples: Whose wallet is this?


Answer: It is Fiona’s wallet.

Whose folder is this?


Answer: It is Andrei’s folder.

Answer the following questions with the possessive form of the word in the
parenthesis.

3. The phrases of the or belonging to can be replaced by the shortened


possessive/singular noun.

Example: the books of Marga – Marga’s books

Change the following phrases to the short form to show ownership.

2. the eyeglasses of Clark - ____________________________________

4. To show the possessive form of plural nouns ending in s, put an
apostrophe (‘) only after the s.

Examples: shoes of the boys – the boys’ shoes


eggs of the hens – the hens’ eggs

5. If the plural form of the noun does not end in s, put apostrophe and s
(‘s).

Discussion:
PRONOUNS – are words that are used in place of nouns.

I – is used for the person talking. We use am with pronoun I.


Example: My name is John. I am 8 years old.

He – is used for a boy.


Example: Philip is my brother. He is kind.

She – is used for a girl.


Example: Bella is pretty. She will join the contest.

It- is used for a thing or an animal.


Examples: The plate is clean. It is new.
The dog is barking. It is mad.

You – is used to a person you are talking to.


Example: Nick, come here. You sing for us.

We – is used for a group of persons including the speaker.


Example: Audrey and I are friends. We are always together.

They – is used for persons, things or animals being talked about.


Example: The boys are playing. They are noisy.

Remember: We use the word is with pronouns He, She and It.
We use the word are with pronouns You, We and They.

questions.

WHO – used in asking a question about a person.

Examples: Who is your friend?


Who is your teacher?

WHAT – used in asking a question about an object, animal or when asking for
information.

Examples: What is your favorite toy?


What is your name?

* Use a question mark ( ? ) when asking questions.

place or thing.

Examples:
