2. Give the importance of media
Learning Inputs:
Terms to understand:
● Literacy: The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute,
using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a
continuum of learning, wherein individuals are able to achieve their goals, develop their
knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and wider society.

physical objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to any physical
object used to communicate messages.

information.

Media Information Literacy

Media and information literacy, often referred to as MIL, is about equipping citizens
with the competencies and skills to engage effectively and responsibly with media and

Directions: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow. Write your answers on
a short bond paper.
Fake news: sound bites on a burning topic

Fake news, or disinformation, is not a new phenomenon. But today, with the rise of digital
media, it spreads easily and quickly. It is the task of responsible journalists and trusted news
organizations to douse the flames of this dangerous wildfire and call fake news out for what it
really is – lies.

“With growing evidence of interference in democratic processes around the world, the debate
over how to expose and eliminate fake news is certain to intensify. But the discussion is already
confused by misunderstanding about the phenomenon, its origins, and why it poses a threat in
the first place.

To try to illustrate the problem, the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN) has developed a definition
for fake news: “Information deliberately fabricated and published with the intention to deceive
and mislead others into believing falsehoods or doubting verifiable facts.” Using this definition,
it is easier to separate propaganda, “alternative” facts, and malicious lies from journalism.”

1. Fake news is defined as information deliberately fabricated and published with the
intention to deceive and mislead others into believing falsehoods or doubting verifiable
facts. In other words, misinformation with intent to deceive and spread lies.
2. What is the purpose of the writer in the selection? The writer aimed to spread awareness
about fake news by relaying to its readers its nature and purpose.
3. How can you avoid believing in fake news? As fake news becomes rampant in our society,
we must always keep in mind to fact-check the information we consume. Additionally, we
should refrain from getting information from non-reliable sources. Only gather information
from reputable sources.

DAY 3
Learning Opportunity
Directions: Read the comments on the picture below about Kim Chui’s Youtube video, “Bawal
Lumabas.” Then answer the following questions. Write your answers on a short bond paper.

1. What is the purpose of bashing and shaming messages of people in social media? How are
we going to apply media literacy on this simple situation? The purpose of bashing and
shaming messages in social media is essentially to spread hate. With media literacy, people
will become more aware about the effects and consequences of bashing/shaming in social
media– and why it shouldn’t be a practice.
3
2. Is it an appropriate behaviour to bash? Explain your answer. I don’t think so. Bashing is an
inappropriate behavior for it throws hateful messages and deconstructs a person’s dignity
and self-confidence. Though sometimes deemed as a way of “calling out” people for certain
actions, I believe it can still be discussed in a healthy manner where no bashing and
shaming messages need to be thrown at each other.
3. What should be done about this attitude of many in social media? I believe that the best we
can do is educate ourselves and the people around us regarding this attitude in social
media. This is where media and information literacy comes in. The more people that become
aware of it and why it shouldn’t be a social media practice, the better.

DAY 4- DAY 5
