CS3001 RC2 (Flexure Design of Beams)

1) This document reviews concepts related to reinforced concrete beams including cracking moment, ultimate moment, and failure modes. 2) The cracking moment occurs when the tensile stress in the concrete reaches its flexural tensile strength. The ultimate moment is reached when the extreme compression fiber strain reaches 0.003. 3) There are three failure modes: tension failure (under-reinforced), compression failure (over-reinforced), and balanced failure. The balanced section has steel and concrete reach their strain limits simultaneously.

Flexural deformation and curvature

δθ 1
Rotation per unit length, is called as curvature (κ) κ= =
δx R

Change in angle:

δθ =
(ε 0δx + ε st δx )
d

Hence,

δθ (ε 0 + ε st ) ε 0
κ= = =
δx d dn

For small deflections, the curvature equals the slope of the average strain diagram
14
Ductility
- Ductility allows large deformations to occur under overload conditions
before eventual failure
- Ductile members give warning of the impending failure
- Under reinforced beams are more ductile
κu
Ductility: µ=
κy

κu : curvature at the ultimate

failure moment Mu

κy : curvature at the yield moment
