Runout Controls

This document discusses two types of runout controls: circular runout and total runout. Circular runout controls the form, location, and orientation of individual circular elements of a diameter independently relative to a datum axis. Total runout controls the form, location, and orientation of all surface elements of a diameter simultaneously relative to the datum axis. The document also mentions that runout controls are composite controls used to control features like coaxiality and that runout is measured as the maximum indicator reading when the part is rotated 360 degrees about the datum axis. Sections on calculations and comparisons between the two runout types are also noted.

Introduction
Runout is a composite control. A composite control controls the
form, location, and orientation of a part feature simultaneously
(in a single gage reading). Runout controls are often used to control
the coaxiality of diameters. A runout control always requires a
datum axis. There are two types of runout controls: circular runout
and total runout.
A runout control can be applied to any part feature that surrounds,
or is intersected by, the datum axis. A runout tolerance value
specified in a feature control frame indicates the maximum
permissible indicator reading (gage travel) of the considered feature,
when the part is rotated 360° about its datum axis.
Circular Runout
Circular runout is a composite control that affects the form,
orientation, and location of circular elements (individually) of
a part feature relative to a datum axis. A circular runout control
is a geometric tolerance that limits the amount of circular runout of
a part surface. Circular runout applies independently to each
circular element of a diameter. It is referred to as a composite
control because it controls the form, location, and orientation of a
part feature simultaneously (in a single gage reading). Circular
runout is frequently used to control the location of circular
elements of a diameter. When applied to a diameter, it controls the
form (circularity) and location of the diameter to a datum axis.

Total Runout
Total runout is a composite control affecting the form,
orientation, and location of all surface elements
(simultaneously) of a diameter (or surface) relative to a datum
axis. A total runout control is a geometric tolerance that limits the
amount of total runout of a surface. It applies to the entire length
of a diameter simultaneously. It is referred to as a composite
control because it affects the form, orientation, and location of a
part feature simultaneously. Total runout is frequently used to
control the location of a diameter. When applied to a diameter, it
controls the form (cylindricity), orientation, and location of the
diameter relative to a datum axis.
