Research Module 3

The document contains a module for a research in teaching subject. It includes activities for students to plan out their proposed study methodology. In the activities, a student outlines that they will use a qualitative research design and descriptive research method to gather data at a single point in time on selected variables. They also provide examples of calculating sample size using statistical formulas. The document provides guidance for students to properly plan and design their research study.

MODULE 3

Activity 1 Writing this section

1. What is the general methodology or research design do you intend to utilize in

your proposed study?
 The general methodology or research design that I like in our proposed study is,
qualitative design because this design is systematic subjective approach used to
describe life experiences and give them meaning. The goal of this design is to
gain insights, explore the depth, richness and complexity inherent in the
phenomenon.
2. Why did you choose this research design?
 I choose this research design because this qualitative is extremely useful when a
subject, is too complex be encapsulated by a simple yes or no hypothesis and
this design is often more practicable when budgets are small and sample sizes
are restricted.
3. What specific type of the research design will you use?
 The specific type of research design that I like in our study is, descriptive design
because this design is will be done on gathering or collecting data at a single
point in time. The participants in this type of study are selected based on
particular variables of interest.
4. Why did you choose this specific methodology?
 I choose this specific methodology because I know that it really helpful design for
us to gather important data and also to support our findings and it will be easy for
us to gather because it is single point in time on collecting data and also this
design can use a wide variety of research methods to investigate one or more
variables.

What other formula are readily available in order to determine the number of sample
size for a given population? Cite the formula and give example.

Formula:

Example:

We would like to start an ISP and need to estimate the average Internet usage of
households in one week for our business plan and model. How many households must
we randomly select to be 95 percent sure that the sample mean is within 1 minute of the
population mean. Assume that a previous survey of household usage has shown =
6.95 minutes.

Solution:

We are solving for the sample size.

A 95% degree confidence corresponds to ɑ = 0.05. Each of the shaded tails in the
following figure has an area of = 0.025.

The region to the left of and to the right of z = 0 is 0.5 - 0.025, or 0.475.In the table of
the standard normal (z) distribution, an area of 0.475 corresponds to a z value of 1.96.
The critical value is therefore = 1.96.

The margin of error E = 1 and the standard deviation σ = 6.95. Using the formula for
sample size, we can calculate n:

== 185.55 = 186

So we will need to sample at least 186 (rounded up) randomly selected households. With this
sample we will be 95 percent confidence that the sample mean will be within 1 minute of
the true population of Internet usage.

Activity 3 THINK OF THIS

A researcher wants to conduct a practical research in order to determine the

effectiveness of peer counseling on the decreasing the truancy of his classmates. Of his
56 classmates, he has selected 20 whose residences are within a kilometer’s radius
from the school.

1. What sampling technique did the researcher use?

 The researchers sampling techniques is used is, non – probability sampling
technique (convenience sampling) because the researcher was selected only the
participants that is near at school. So his study is not all his classmates in the
school have an equal chance of participating in the study, unlike if he use the
probability sampling that all members or classmates has a chance to be selected.
The researchers used this sampling technique, because they are conveniently
available and they are easy to recruit.

2. Do you agree on the strategy he has employed?

 For me, I agree because it is an easy way for the researchers to conduct his
research to the participants if it is conveniently available and easily to recruit. To
use this sampling technique it is help them by its speed, cost-effectiveness and
ease of availability of the sample because the participants are selected only.
Even though they have bias but it is an easy and quickly to gather data that can
help to your study.

Activity 4 PLEASE REPEAT THE QUESTIONS. Identify what is wrong with the
question and try to write a new one.

1. Do you like cellphones?

2. Do you believe cellphones and laptops must be allowed for use inside the
classroom?

3. Do you consider a quad core processor to be an important feature of a cellphone?

4. Whenever the teacher is discussing in front of the class and a phone rings right in the
middle of it, it can be distracting. Do you find the ringing of a phone distracting enough
to take you out of your focus?

5. Agree or disagree: The school should not discontinue its ban of cellular phones in
class.

Answer:

1. Do you use cellphone?

2. Do you think cellphones should be allowed in school?

3. Do you think that quad core processor is an important feature of a cellphone?

4. Does ringing of a phone during a discussion is enough to get out on your focus?

5. Do you agree or disagree, that a school should not discontinue its ban of cellphones
in class.

EVALUATION:

Talk with your group mates and be able to do the following in your chosen study.

1. Choose appropriate research design;

 Our study will make use of non-experimental type of research design making use
of pre-experimental design.

2. Describe sampling procedure and the sample;

 Purposive sampling
 On this type of sampling design, the researcher chooses the necessary number
of respondents based on the need of the study. On our study we will be using
this type of sampling design since there are only few numbers of student in grade
6 of San Isidro Elementary School.

3. Construct instrument and establish its validity and reliability;

 The instrumentation of the researcher is as follow: Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM),

test item analysis. Observations will be conducted after the giving of test item analysis.
 During the test proper, in order to keep the test length reasonable regarding the amount
of class time it took and so as not to overwhelm students. The test length was restricted
to no more than 30 minutes, the test created, will have 25 questions. The number of
questions and 25 test duration are consistent with other commonly used tests in
periodical test/ examination.

4. Plan data collection procedure;

 This is the stages on gathering necessary data needed in the action research
problem.
 Stage 1 – Preparation of the Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM)
 Stage 2 – Administer Pretest
 Stage 3 – Administer the treatment using SIM
 Stage 4 – Administer Post-test
 Stage 5 – Data Analysis

5. Plan data analysis using statistics and hypothesis (if appropriate).

 To address the research questions, the data to be collected will be analyzed for
accuracy and type of method. Aside from computing the information both tests
and Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM). Analyze of the age or gender may be
conducted, though minimally and only included as additional or supporting data.
