Green Hydrogen PPT Excerpts

The document discusses demand, production costs, storage potential, and challenges and opportunities regarding hydrogen. It notes that hydrogen demand is expected to increase sevenfold by 2050 across multiple sectors. Production costs via electrolysis are expected to drop significantly from the current 350 Rs/kg to below 100 Rs/kg by 2050 as renewable energy costs fall. Hydrogen has the highest potential for energy storage compared to batteries and other methods. The document estimates the levelized cost of hydrogen production for ammonia generation will be in the range of 294-335 Rs/kg by 2023. While high costs currently pose a weakness, technological advances over time are expected to eliminate this weakness and hydrogen could help reduce fossil fuel imports and meet environmental goals.

Demand Scenario

The current usage of Hydrogen is mainly in the refining industry and for ammonia
generation.
This is expected to jump seven folds by 2050 and foray into various other sectors
like power, transport & steel.

Falling costs

H₂ production through electrolysis is done using alkaline or PEM technique. With

falling per unit cost of electricity the levelised cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) is
expected to drop from its current price of 350 Rs/kg to below Rupees 100 by 2050.

Cost Analysis

The cost of Hydrogen produced by electrolysis depends on the electrolyser cost, the
cost of electrical energy & operating hours.
2. Larger capacity electrolysers will bring down the prices with longer operating
durations.

3. At present the green Hydrogen price is almost 4 times of grey hydrogen, but this
will become competitive with gre Hydrogen in years to come
4. Another factor expected to bring Hydrogen cost is falling energy costs of
renewables. This has almost reduced 3 times in the past 6 years.

Storage Potential:

1. The energy from renewable sources can be stored in the form of batteries, pumped
storage, compressed air & hydrogen.
2. As we can see from the figure, Hydrogen has highest energy storage capacity
3. Also the discharge time of energy stored in the form of hydrogen varies from a
few hours to upto a year.

LCOH Estimation:

1. Based on Business, Energy & Industry Standard's model we have calculated the
levelised cost of H₂ for use as feedstock for NH3 generation

2. The details of this has been explained in our report.

3. The LCOH of the hydrogen has been calculated to be in the range of 294-335 per
kg of the H₂ by 2023.

Challenges & Opportunities

STRENGTH

As we have explained earlier, H2 has a very high storage potential and has a very
versatile usage.

Being an emission free gas it will help in reducing carbon footprint.

WEAKNESS

The main weakness of H2 at present is its high cost. But with technological
advancements this weaknes will get eliminated in time to come.

OPPORTUNITIES:

The heavy burden on our economy due to fossil fuel imports provides an opportunity
for acceptance of H₂ as alternate fuel.
It will help India achieve its Aatma NIRBHAR MISSION and will also help to comply
with environmental norms.

THREATS

H₂ gas being highly inflammable and explosive in nature requires developement in

enhancing its safety during storage and transportation.

Lastly, we require further developements to make H2 acceptable in many fields as

alternate source of energy. Policy changes and regulations are required from Gol to
make industries accept H₂ as energy source.
