Asynchronous Activity March 07, 2022: 1. Explain What Vulnerability Means

The document discusses vulnerability to natural hazards. It defines vulnerability as the possibility of being harmed and explains that greater vulnerability leads to more severe impacts and higher risk. It then describes four types of vulnerability - physical, economic, social, and environmental - and provides examples of each. Specifically, it discusses how informal settlers in Manila are economically vulnerable, hospital patients were socially vulnerable during a fire, and Indonesia is environmentally vulnerable due to its location in the ring of fire. It also analyzes why the Guadalupe Bridge in Makati is physically vulnerable to earthquakes compared to other Manila bridges, due to its proximity to a fault line and existing cracks in the structure.

1. Explain what vulnerability means

According to what we have discussed earlier, vulnerability is the openness to attack or harm, or
tolerance to harm pertaining to the elements at risk from natural hazard. It is also known as the
possibility of being of being harmed or attacked. The greater the vulnerability, the more extreme
and severe the impact and has a greater factor determining risk.

2. Explain 4 types of Vulnerability and give examples for each from actual situations
(real life situations).
A. Physical vulnerability – It is the possibility of having a tangible impact on the environment.
It also focuses more on roads, bridges, infrastructures including buildings as well as homes. The
monetary value of physical assets in a hazardous zone is widely used to define physical
vulnerability.
Wooden houses are less prone to collapse in the event of an earthquake, but they are more
susceptible to fire. Just like how the fire destroyed houses made of light materials in Marikina
City last November 2011. A fire that raged for an hour burned a dozen homes built along the
river just because the house materials used were wooden and that makes it physically vulnerable
from disaster.
B. Economic vulnerability – This focuses on a country's economics, specifically the disparity in
economic standing between upper-class and lower-class families. Those from lower-income
households are more vulnerable than those from higher-income families because they have a
stronger response to calamity and because the lower-class lack the resources to build sturdy
structures and put other engineering measures in place to protect themselves from being
negatively impacted by disasters.
In Manila, more than 500,000 people live as squatters, or as they call themselves, informal settler
families. Because they don't have land titles, their right to live in their homes is regularly
challenged by the government and private landowners. Poor housing and living conditions, poor
health-care options, low standard of living, lack of adequate water supply and sanitation, and
poor urban basic services are some of the main challenges they are facing. In that case, informal
settlers are one of the most vulnerable when a disaster comes such as super typhoon.
C. Social vulnerability – It focuses on the effects of events on vulnerable groups such as the
poor, single-parent families, pregnant or breastfeeding women, the handicapped, children, and
the elderly. Considering public awareness of risk, groups' ability to cope with disasters on their
own, and the state of institutional organizations designed to assist them in coping. Social
vulnerability refers to the characteristics of a person or group in terms of their capacity to
anticipate, cope with, resist and recovery from the impact of a natural hazard
A fire hit the state-run Philippine General Hospital at Taft Avenue, Manila. Obviously, those
who are handicapped, senior citizens, or those who are disabled are the ones who were
vulnerable from the fire as they can’t easily help themselves and protect themselves because of
the condition they were in.
D. Environmental vulnerability – Exposure to the environment, sensitivity to it, and the ability
to adjust to it are all factors to consider when it comes to environmental vulnerability.
Indonesia has a strategic location, which is between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The
location of Indonesia then made Indonesia included in the part of the ring of fire. Ring of fire
itself is a series of volcanoes (some are still active) that surround the Pacific Ocean. This
situation affects disasters that will occur in the territory of Indonesia, one of which is the
tsunami. The earthquake and tsunami that occurred was heavily influenced by tectonic fault
activity and that makes Indonesians more vulnerable to disaster because of the environment they
are living in.

3. Conduct a simple research about Guadalupe Bridge in Edsa Makati. Analyze and
explain why it is vulnerable to earthquake as compared to other bridges in Metro
Manila.
The Guadalupe Bridge, which is part of, consists of an inner bridge and two outer bridges. The
length of the bridge from its two abutments is 114.44 meters (375.5 ft). The outer bridges have
10 lanes in total and a junction at the Makati side of the bridge connects to J. P. Rizal Avenue.
The Guadalupe Bridge is a road bridge that connects the cities of Makati and Mandaluyong in
Metro Manila, Philippines
The reason why the Guadalupe Bridge on EDSA, Makati is particularly vulnerable to
earthquakes is because it is the nearest bridge to the fault line. Being close to a fault line could be
dangerous; also, the Guadalupe Bridge has numerous cracks, indicating that it is now weaker and
unable to withstand the magnitude of the earthquake.
Even without a significant earthquake, the persistent vibrations and enormous load that
Guadalupe Bridge is subjected to will eventually lead the fissures to get larger, and the bridge
may collapse.
