3 Operating Environment
When setting up the analyzer, select a location away from heat, smoke, electrical
interference and avoid any electrostatic discharges (ESD) to the analyzer unit. The
bench top should be a level surface and free of vibration.

Ensure that the vent holes of the analyzer are not obstructed. The analyzer requires
an environment with ambient room temperature in the range of 10°C to 45°C.

CAUTION! Before making any connections, make sure that the power cable at the
back of the analyzer is not plugged into an electrical outlet.
Only one set-up utility is required: an A.C. electrical outlet. It is recommended that
the analyzer is plugged into its own circuit to avoid power line interference and
voltage surges or drops, which may occur if the circuit is shared with devices with
high electrical draw.

For protection against scratches and spills, it is recommended that the screen
protection film is placed on the touch screen monitor – one protection film is already
placed on the touch screen monitor! (to reorder, please contact your local agent or
eralytics GmbH).

4 General Description of the Standard Methods
Following you find a detailed description of all methods according to this analyzer is
capable to measure. Your instrument may be not fully equipped with all methods
since it depends on the purchased software modules.

4.1 ASTM D5191

This standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of gasoline. It is
measuring the total pressure Ptot against vacuum, which consist of the partial
pressure of gasoline and the partial pressure of the dissolved air in gasoline.

Ptot = Pgasoline + Pair

Since only the Pgasoline is of interest a correlation formula to the so called Dry Reid
bomb method D4953 (measurement of the vapor pressure of gasoline and gasoline
oxygenated blends) was developed by the ASTM based on a round robin test in
1991. Applying this empirically developed correlation formula the vapor pressure of
gasoline is calculated.
This vapor pressure is called DVPE (Dry Vapor Pressure Equivalent).

DVPE = 0.965xPtot-3.78kPa DVPE = 0.965xPtot-0.548psi

Another correlation formula was developed by the US EPA. It correlates to ASTM

D4953 but as reference instrument the Herzog horizontal bath was used only.

DVPE EPA = 0.956xPtot-2.39kPa DVPE EPA = 0.956xPtot-0.347psi

A third correlation formula was developed by CARB to correlate to ASTM D323 (Reid
Vapor Pressure, so called Wet Reid) which can be applied to non-oxygenated fuels
only.

RVPE CARB = 0.972xPtot-4.93kPa RVPE CARB = 0.972xPtot-0.715psi

These formulas are valid for gasoline measured at 37.8°C (100°F) only.

In general, when the vapor pressure of gasoline has to be determined according to

ASTM D5191 the formula DVPE = 0.965xPtot-3.78kPa (0.548psi) has to be used.

Sample preparation: Prior to the measurement the sample has to be brought to the
defined condition as stated in D5191. Cool the sample to 0-1°C (32-34°F) in a 1l
container filled to 70-80%. Open the cold bottle to let some air in, close it
immediately and shake it vigorously for a few seconds. Put the bottle back into the
refrigerator or ice bath. Let it sit there for 5 minutes and repeat this procedure twice.
This procedure is the so called air saturation at 0-1°C (32-34°F) to make it ready for
the test.

An alternative method is ASTM D6378 which gives the DVPE as well but the sample
preparation is not necessary.

15
4.1.1 Quality control samples
There are some quality control samples recommended by ASTM D5191. If Ptot or
DVPE (DVPE = 0.965xPtot-3.78kPa (0.548psi)) is within the below mentioned range
the instrument is well calibrated.

Sample Ptot (air saturated@0°C) DVPE

Pentane 112.8 +/- 1.2kPa 105.1 +/- 1.2kPa

16.36 +/- 0.17psi 15.24 +/- 0.17psi

2.2 Dimethylbutane (neo-Hexan) 74.1 +/- 1.2kPa 67.7 +/- 1.2kPa

10.75 +/- 0.17psi 9.82 +/- 0.17psi

4.2 ASTM D6378

This standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of different kinds of
liquids including gasoline and solvents. It is measuring the absolute vapor pressure
Pabs against vacuum. By three pressure readings at different vapor to liquid ratios
the partial pressure of the air dissolved in the liquid, named Pgas, is calculated and
the total pressure Ptot is measured. Thus the absolute vapor pressure of the liquid is
calculated as following:

Pabs = Ptot - Pgas

A correlation formula to the so called Dry Reid bomb method D4953 (measurement
of the vapor pressure of gasoline and gasoline oxygenated blends) was developed
by the ASTM based on a round robin test in 1991. Applying this empirically
developed correlation formula the DVPE (dry vapor pressure equivalent) of gasoline
is calculated.

DVPE = Pabs-1.005kPa DVPE = Pabs-0.146psi

Another correlation formula was developed by the US EPA. It correlates to ASTM

D4953 but as reference instrument the Herzog horizontal bath was used only.

DVPE EPA = Pabs-0.137 kPa DVPE EPA = Pabs-0.02psi

A third correlation formula was developed by CARB to correlate to ASTM D323 (Reid
Vapor Pressure, so called Wet Reid) which can be applied to non-oxygenated fuels
only.

RVPE CARB = Pabs -1.575kPa RVPE CARB = Pabs-0.23psi

These formulas are valid for gasoline measured at 37.8°C (100°F) only.

In general, when the vapor pressure of gasoline has to be determined according to

ASTM D6378 the formula DVPE = Pabs-1.005kPa (0.15psi) has to be used.

Sample preparation: no sample preparation is required for this method since the
partial pressure of the air dissolved in the gasoline is measured and calculated.

16
4.2.1 Quality control samples
There are some quality control samples recommended by ASTM D6378. If Pabs is
within the below mentioned range the instrument is well calibrated.

Sample Pabs

Pentane 107.9 +/- 1.2kPa

15.65 +/- 0.17psi

2.2 Dimethylbutane (neo-Hexan) 68.8 +/- 1.2kPa

9.98 +/- 0.17psi

4.3 ASTM D6378 Curve

The method ASTM D6378 is used to measure the tendency of a liquid over a
selected temperature range. When the measurement is started Pgas is determined
at 37.8°C (100°F) and then calculated for each measurement point.
A dynamic measurement with a predefined heating rate or a static measurement
where to each measuring temperature is regulated and waited for stable pressure
reading can be performed.

4.4 ASTM D6377

This standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of crude oil. It is
measuring the total vapor pressure VPCR (Vapor Pressure Crude oil) against
vacuum.

An old method often used for crude oil measurement is ASTM D323. The problem
using this method is the sample preparation which can cause erroneous results
depending on the crude. Light crude oil and life crude oil contains lots of high
volatiles like gases which will be more or less lost doing the sample preparation as
described in D323 (shaking the sample for air saturation). This is the biggest reason
why the repeatability and reproducibility for crude oil using the D323 method is so
bad.

Using the method ASTM D6377 the precision is much better and the results are not
influenced by the sample preparation. This method is the only suitable method to
give the correct result for crude oil samples. The sample is introduced into the
instrument without doing any sample preparation. That keeps the high volatiles in the
sample to ensure a correct result.

However a correlation formula was developed by the ASTM based on the most
recent round robin test. Applying this empirically developed correlation formula
based on the crude oil samples of this round robin the RVPE (Reid Vapor Pressure
Equivalent) according D323 of crude oil is predicted as following:

Crude from non-pressurized container: RVPE = 0.915xVPCR+0.0kPa

RVPE = 0.915xVPCR+0.0psi

17
Crude from floating piston cylinders: RVPE = 0.834xVPCR+0.0kPa
RVPE = 0.834xVPCR+0.0psi

This formula is valid at 37.8°C (100°F) and a vapor to liquid ratio of 4/1 only.

4.4.1 Quality control samples

There are some quality control samples recommended by ASTM D6377. If the VPCR
is within the below mentioned range the instrument is well calibrated.

Sample VPCR (cooled and air saturated, V/L = 4 @ 37.8°C (100°F))

Pentane 112.8 +/- 1.2kPa 105.1 +/- 1.2kPa

16.36 +/- 0.17psi 15.24 +/- 0.17psi

2.2 Dimethylbutane (neo-Hexan) 74.1 +/- 1.2kPa 67.7 +/- 1.2kPa

10.75 +/- 0.17psi 9.82 +/- 0.17psi

4.5 ASTM D6377 Curve

The method ASTM D6377 is used to measure the tendency of a liquid over a
selected temperature range. A dynamic measurement with a predefined heating rate
or a static measurement where on each measuring temperature is regulated can be
performed.

4.6 ASTM D5188

This standard method is used to determine the temperature T(V/L=20) where a
cooled (0°C (32°F)) and air saturated sample in a closed chamber with a vapor to
liquid ratio of 20 to 1 builds up a pressure of 101.3kPa (14.69psi).

4.6.1 Quality control samples

There is a quality control samples recommended by ASTM D5188. If the cooled and
air saturated sample is within the following range the instrument is well calibrated.

Sample T(V/L=20)

n-Pentane 35.8°C +/- 0.5°C

96.4°F +/- 1°F

2,2 Dimethylbutane 49.4°C +/- 0.5°C

(neo-Hexane) 120.9°F +/- 1°F

n-Hexane 68.3°C +/- 0.5°C

155.0°F +/- 1°F

18
4.7 ASTM D5188 Curve
The method ASTM D5188 is used to measure the temperature tendency of a sample
using several V/L ratios in the range of 2:1 to at least 60:1.

4.8 ASTM D5482

This standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of gasoline. It is
measuring the vapor pressure against atmospheric pressure.
A correlation formula to the so called Dry Reid bomb method D4953 (measurement
of the vapor pressure of gasoline and gasoline oxygenated blends) was developed
by the ASTM based on a round robin test in 1991. Applying this empirically
developed the so called DVPE (Dry Vapor Pressure Equivalent) is calculated:

DVPE = 0.965xPtot+ 0.54 kPa DVPE = 0.965xPtot+ 0.078psi

4.9 ASTM D6897

This standard method is used to determine the vapor pressure of Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG) at V/L ratios between 0.1:1 and 4:1, measured against
vacuum. The result is reported relative to atmospheric pressure. Thus the
measurement result is corrected using the following formula:

VPLPG = VPtot-101.3kPa VPLPG = VPtot-14.69psi

In most cases a V/L ratio of 0.5:1 is used at a temperature of 37.8°C (100°F).

The standard instrument is limited to a maximum pressure of 1000kPa. However a
modification of the measuring cell valves and the pressure sensor will also allow
pressures up to 2000kPa.

4.9.1 Quality control samples

There are quality control samples recommended by ASTM D6897. If the sample is
within the following range the instrument is well calibrated.

Sample VPtot @ 37.8°C (100°F) and V/L = 0.5:1

Butane 356.5kPa +/- 6kPa

51.7psi +/- 0.9psi

Propane 1301kPa +/- 7kPa

188.7psi +/- 1psi

4.10 EN 13016-1
This standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of gasoline. It is
measuring the total pressure Ptot against vacuum, which consist of the partial

ASVP = Pgasoline+Pair (ASVP = Air Saturated Vapor Pressure)

Since the Pgasoline is of interest only, a correlation formula to the so called Dry Reid
bomb method (measurement of the vapor pressure of gasoline and gasoline
oxygenated blends) was developed by the EN and ASTM. Applying this empirically
developed correlation formula the vapor pressure of gasoline is calculated.
This vapor pressure is called DVPE (Dry Vapor Pressure Equivalent).

DVPE = 0.965xASVP-3.78kPa DVPE = 0.965xASVP-0.548psi

Sample preparation: Prior to the measurement the sample has to be brought to the
defined condition as stated in D5191. Cool the sample to 0-1C (32-34°F) in a 1l
container filled to 70-80%. Open the cold bottle to let some air in, close it
immediately and shake it vigorously for a few seconds. Put the bottle back into the
refrigerator or ice bath. Let it sit there for 5 minutes and repeat this procedure twice.
This procedure is the so called air saturation at 0-1°C (32-34°F) to make it ready for
the test.

4.10.1 Quality control samples

There are some quality control samples recommended by EN13016-1. If ASVP is
within the below mentioned range the instrument is well calibrated.

10.75 +/- 0.17psi 9.82+/- 0.17psi

4.11 EN 13016-2
This standard method is used to determine the vapor pressure of gasoline at
temperatures between 40°C and 70°C with a vapor to liquid ratio of 3/2. The vapor
pressure is measured against vacuum whereas the partial pressure of the air is
measured and calculated at 37.8°C and then corrected for each further measuring
temperature.

4.12 SHT0769
This standard method is a Chinese Petrochemical Standard and used for measuring
the vapor pressure of gasoline and gasoline oxygenated blends. It is measuring the
absolute vapor pressure Pabs against vacuum. By three pressure readings at
different vapor to liquid ratios the partial pressure of the air dissolved in the liquid,
named Pgas, is calculated and the total pressure Ptot is measured. Thus the
absolute vapor pressure of the liquid is calculated as following:

Pabs = Ptot - Pgas

4.18 JIS K2258-2

This Japanese standard method is used for measuring the vapor pressure of
different kinds of liquids including gasoline and solvents. It is measuring the absolute
vapor pressure Pabs against vacuum. By three pressure readings at different vapor
to liquid ratios the partial pressure of the air dissolved in the liquid, named Pgas, is

4.19 V/L Curve

This method does determine the total vapor pressure at a defined temperature at
several V/L ratios. The smalles V/L ratio can be adjusted in the settings menu. The
total vapor pressure at following V/L ratios can be determined with one
measurement: 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 4.

22
4.20 EN-ASTM Curve
This method does determine the absolute vapor pressure and can cover EN
methods like EN13016-2 as well as ASTM D6378. It is basically for the vapor
pressure tendency determination of a liquid over a certain temperature range. The
V/L ratio is selectable from 1:1 to 4:1.

4.21 ASTM D6377 low V/L Curve

This method does determine the total vapor pressure of crude oil and condensate at
a defined temperature with various V/L ratios which can be freely programmed. It is
preferred to measure low V/L ratios between 0.02 – 0.5. The vapor volume is then
still large enough to create very accurate V/L ratios with the installed piston.

4.22 ASTM D6377 high V/L Curve

This method does determine the total vapor pressure of crude oil and condensate at
a defined temperature with various V/L ratios which can be freely programmed. It is
preferred to measure high V/L ratios between 0.5 – 4 or higher. The sample volume
is then still large enough to create very accurate V/L ratios with the installed piston.

27
5.3.2 External keyboard
Connect a standard keyboard to the analyzer by the USB port at the rear panel. If
you touch the field to be modified for less than 1 second the cursor jumps into the
field without opening the soft touch keyboard and it can be modified.

If a name must be added to a drop down list like OPERATOR or SAMPLE ID make
sure the cursor is blinking in the desired drop down list. Enter the name and press
“enter” on the keyboard. Then the string is stored in the list and can be recalled. If
“enter” is not pressed the name is displayed but not stored in the list.

When a name is cleared and “enter” is pressed on the keyboard the name is erased
from the drop down list.

5.4 PC Mouse
If you want to use a PC Mouse make sure to connect it to one of the USB ports of
the instrument before the unit is switched on. The mouse is then automatically
recognized after power up and can be used like on a PC.

5.5 Barcode reader

Program the barcode reader with a Prefix ^ (ASCII code 94) and a Suffix \r (ASCII
code 13). Please see the manual of the barcode reader for detailed description.
Some barcode readers call it Preamble and Terminator.

Connect the barcode reader to the analyzer by the USB port at the rear panel. If you
scan a barcode the string will be automatically placed into the SAMPLE ID field. It
will NOT be added to the drop down list.

28
6 Measurement Menu
After the analyzer is powered the Analyzer Control Panel screen appears as follows:

Choose the measuring standard

Choose or enter the sample identification

Choose or enter the operator name

Enter sample container volume

Enter the number of measurements

Measuring temperature

ATTENTION: This menu may appear differently since the shown parameters depend
on the screen settings (see section “Measuring Screen Settings”).

29
6.1 Measurement Settings

6.1.1 Choosing the Standard Method

Use the drop down list to select the desired standard.

6.1.2 Choosing the Sample ID and the Operator name

Select the “Sample ID” and the “Operator” from the entered names of the
corresponding drop down list.

Entering a new name

Type in a new name and press enter. The new name is added to the list.

Clearing a name
Select the name to be cleared and touch it that the keyboard pops up. Clear the
name with the “<<” key and press “Enter”. Now the name is removed from the list.

30
6.1.2.1 Incremental Sample ID
To distinguish samples without changing the “Sample ID” an option is installed for
automatically increasing the “Sample ID”. In the “Settings menu” click the option
“Increment Sample ID” and press “Save”.

Go into the “Measure menu”, the “Sample ID” is now split into two fields. The first
field is a numeric one which defines the numeric start of the “Sample ID”.

The second field is used for the name. The symbol “#” anywhere in the name is a
placeholder for the number defined in the first field. This number is automatically
increased after each measurement.

The numeric field can be changed or reset after each test measurement.

31
6.1.3 Choosing the Number of Measurements
Enter the number of tests to be done automatically one after the other. The sample
may be removed just after the filling procedure of the last test is performed. Also be
aware that for several standard methods the sample has to be prepared (e.g. chilled
and air saturated). This prepared state may change if the sample is kept under
ambient temperature longer than necessary.
Several measurements can only be made e.g. with pure liquids using ASTM D6378.

6.1.4 Sample container volume

Some standard methods allow different sample container volumes (e.g. ASTM
D5191 allows 1 liter or 250mL). However according to these standard methods the
precision (repeatability and reproducibility) differs with the volume. Therefore the
sample container volume must be reported.
Enter the sample container size (“Volume [ml]”) and it will be reported in the “Result”
menu.

ATTENTION: If the sample container size (“Volume [ml]”) is not shown in the
“Measure” menu please see section “10.1.3.3 Sample Container Volume” to enable
this option.

32
Otherwise the selected volume in the “General” tab of the “Settings” menu is used.
Furthermore other volumes than 100, 250 and 1000mL can be programmed.

6.1.5 Substance Calibration “C!”

If a substance calibration is stored for the selected standard method then the sign
“C!” appears next to the standard (see section 12.2 Substances Calibration).

All measurements performed with a “C!” sign will also be saved with “C!” in the info
column of the measurement result grid in the “Results” menu.

For all other standard methods a recalibration of temperature and pressure is

recommended to achieve reliable results.

33
6.2 Manual Rinsing
Rinsing of the measurement cell is very important to avoid cross contaminations
from the previous sample. ERAVAP automatically rinses with the sample to be
measured when a measurement is started. This is usually sufficient for gasoline
samples. However additional rinses can be performed by pressing the “RINSE”
button in order to clean the measuring cell. Once the “RINSE” button is pressed 5
rinsing cycles of the measurement cell are performed.

ATTENTION: Do not use acetone for rinsing as long as there are high pressure
valves (up to 2000kPa) for LPG installed. Acetone will attack the sealing material of
these valves!
For instruments with valves having a pressure range up to 1000kPa acetone is not of
a problem.

34
6.2.1 Cleaning procedure for high Ethanol content samples
Gasoline samples with higher ethanol content may cause cross contaminations if low
or non-ethanol content gasoline is measured afterwards. Residues of samples with
elevated (>25V%) ethanol concentrations can cause a high pressure bias for
subsequently measured samples and about 3 rinses (3x5 rinse cycles) with a non-
ethanol gasoline are required to purge the measurement cell.

6.2.2 Cleaning procedure for Crude oil samples

When measuring crude oil it is important to clean the system after the measurement
to avoid clogging of the valves and to clean the measuring cell. Manually rinse the
measurement cell twice (2x5 rinsing cycles) with toluene by pressing the “RINSE”
button in the “Measure” menu. If the color of the toluene at the outlet of the
instrument is still dark, repeat the rinsing cycle. As soon as the toluene is colorless,
rinse twice with air in order to clean the measurement cell properly.

6.2.3 Cleaning procedure water containing samples

If there is some water in the measurement cell it will certainly influence the
measurement results. Additionally it is difficult to remove water by solely purging the
system with gasoline samples. Use ethanol or any other solvent where water can be
dissolved to remove it from the measurement cell. Rinse about three times (3x5 rinse
cycles) and then three times with gasoline. If the results are still influenced by water
residue repeat the cleaning procedure.

6.2.4 Cleaning procedure for high viscous samples

High viscous samples increase the risk of clogging the measuring system when the
temperature of the cell is lowered (instrument turned off). For this reason rinse the
system after the measurement with 2-propanol, toluene or any other suitable
substance that can dissolve the viscous sample at least two times.

6.2.5 Cleaning procedure using a vacuum pump

The cleaning procedure using a vacuum pump can be initiated in the “Service” tab of
the “Maintenance” menu. Attach a vacuum pump at the outlet of the instrument and
set the cleaning temperature slightly above (3-5°C) the boiling point of the
contaminant. Switch on the vacuum pump and press The “Start” button. The
measurement cell will be automatically evacuated and heated to the set temperature
for a quick cleaning procedure.

T Start:
This is the temperature where the measurement starts. The results are stored in the
programmed Steps until T Final is reached.

T Final:
Temperature at which the measurement ends.

Rate:
This is the heating rate applied for the measurement in °C/min or °F/min depending
on the selected unit in the “System” menu on the “General” tab.

42
If “Rate” = 0 the instrument regulates to the test temperatures according to the
adjusted “Step” and waits until the temperature equilibrium is reached (“Temperature
Equilibrium Time (t)” set on the “Method” tab in the “Settings” menu)
If “Rate” is greater than 0 then the set heating rate is applied. The pressure result is
stored every time the measurement cell was heated to the next temperature step
defined by the “Step” field.

Note: A static measurement with a temperature and pressure equilibrium (“Rate” = 0)

is always more accurate than a dynamic measurement (“Rate” > 0).

Step:
These are the temperature steps at which the pressure readings are stored.

Additional temperature points which are not recognized by the programmed steps
can be programmed. Click the checkbox “Enable additional Temperature Points” and
enter up to 5 additional temperature points in the left hand side table. Also
temperature points of the step frequency which are not of interest can be removed in
the table at the right hand side. Press “OK” to store the new curve parameters.

43

releasing the pressure. Do not forget to close the valve of the pressurized filling
equipment before the “Open Valves” button is pressed.

44
6.6.1 ASTM D6377 V/L 4.00
This standard method is the same as ASTM D6377 but with a fixed V/L ratio of 4.00.

If ERAVAP is used for gasoline measurements (e.g. according to ASTM D5191) as

well as crude oil measurements (e.g. according to ASTM D6377) it is possible to set
the filling temperature equal to the measurement temperature for the ASTM D6377
V/L 4.00 method so that the temperature set in the “Measurement Rinsing” section of
the “General” tab in the “Settings” menu is used for all other methods and is
overwritten for the crude oil measurements.

ATTENTION: If this option is used the crude oil samples should always be
introduced to the unit using an FPC. Otherwise components of the crude oil
exhibiting high vapor pressures may prohibit the sample from being correctly
aspirated into the measurement cell.

45
6.6.2 ASTM D6377 V/L 0.02
This standard method is the same as ASTM D6377 but with fix programmed V/L
ratio of 0.02.

ATTENTION: For the ASTM D6377 V/L 0.02 method the filling temperature is
always set equal to the measurement temperature since due to the small vapor
volume the pressure sensor could be destroyed otherwise.

ATTENTION: If this option is used the crude oil samples should always be
introduced to the unit using an FPC. Otherwise components of the crude oil
exhibiting high vapor pressures may prohibit the sample from being correctly
aspirated into the measurement cell.

46

on the selected unit in the “System” menu on the “General” tab.

48
Note: A static measurement with a temperature and pressure equilibrium (“Rate” = 0)
is always more accurate than a dynamic measurement (“Rate” > 0).

Step:
These are the temperature steps at which the pressure readings are stored.

Additional temperature points which are not recognized by the programmed steps
can be programmed. Click the checkbox “Enable additional Temperature Points” and
enter up to 5 additional temperature points in the left hand side table. Also

92
9 Statistical Quality Assurance and Control Charting
In the “Measure” menu the “QC” button can be used to switch to the so called QC-
mode. In this mode control charting according to ASTM D 6299 can be performed
either for Quality Control of the instrument or for Quality Control of your fuel e.g. for
the blending procedure.

If the “QC” button is not visible go to the “Screen” tab in the “Settings” menu and
activate the “QC button” option. Store with save, the “QC” button must be displayed
now in the “Measure” menu.

93
9.1 QC Mode
This QC mode is installed for each standard method except for multiple point
measurements (e.g. ASTM D6378 Curve, EN 13016-2 etc.). Several standard
methods require quality control according to ASTM D 6299.This is certainly complex
and time consuming. With ERAVAP this analysis can be done automatically and the
instrument will display a warning message when an out of control situation is
detected which may require a recalibration of temperature and pressure.

Pressing the “QC” button, the background color will change immediately, indicating
that the QC measurement mode is active.

94
9.2 QC Sample ID
There are up to 8 different QC slots available (Quality Control Sample (QCS) 1 –
QCS8) which can be named by the “Sample ID”. For the statistical analysis the
sample name is irrelevant, the results are separately stored for each QCS number.

For example in the screen below QCS1 (n-Pentane), QCS2 (neo-Hexane) and
QCS3 (QC sample) are used for checking the instrument according to ASTM D 6299
and QCS8 is used to monitor the vapor pressure of stream 1 during blending.

The statistical analysis is performed independently for each QCS.

95
9.3 Measuring in the QC mode
Select the standard method, the QC sample as well as all the other parameters like
in the standard mode.

Pressing “RUN” the measurement is performed according to the selected standard

method.

96
9.4 Measurement Results in QC mode

After the measurement is finished the result is displayed. Changing to the ”Results”
menu all measurement results for the selected method and QC sample are shown.

If one or more test measurements shall not be used for the statistical analysis they
must be unmarked in the first column of the measurement result.

97
All other functions like the settings and printing are identical like in standard mode.

98

the “Measure” menu (see section 10.5 Measurement Screen Settings).

107
10 Settings Menu
This menu shows all the parameters which are usually set once and do not have to
be changed during daily use.

108
10.1 General Settings
Select the “General” tab to see the general settings which are valid for all methods.

109
10.1.1 Measurement Rinsing
This section shows the settings which are used for the measurement.

10.1.1.1 Temperature
This is the measurement cell temperature at which the sample is aspirated into the
cell. This temperature should be set at least as low that the vapor pressure of the
sample at this temperature is below barometric pressure. Otherwise it cannot be
guaranteed that enough sample volume is introduced into the measurement cell.
If the filling temperature is set to 20°C (68°F) then all gasoline samples can be
measured properly.
This filling temperature can be overwritten for method ASTM D6897, EN13016-2,
ASTM D6377 V/L 4.00, ASTM D6377 V/L 0.02, ASTM D6377 low V/L Curve and
ASTM D6377 high V/L Curve. Go to the “Method” tab in the “Settings” menu and
enable “Set filling temperature to 5.0°C” for ASTM D6897 and “Set filling temperature
to 30.0°C” for EN13016-2. Press the “Save” button to store changes.

For ASTM D6377 V/L 0.02 and ASTM D6377 low V/L Curve it is required to set the
filling temperature equal to the measurement temperature to avoid the influence of
sample expansion. Otherwise a warning will be displayed. By default it is enabled.

110
For ASTM D6377 V/L 4.00 and ASTM D6377 high V/L Curve it is not required that
the filling temperature equals the measurement temperature but convenient if a FPC
is used for filling. But be aware that the filling pressure must be higher than the vapor
pressure of the crude at filling temperature. Then some measurement time can be
saved. By default it is disabled.

Enabling the “Filling Temp = Test Temp” setting will overwrite the “Measurement
Rinsing” temperature chosen in the “General” tab.

111
10.1.1.2 Rinsing Cycles
Sets the number of rinsing cycles performed before each measurement to avoid
cross contaminations from one sample to the next one. In general 5 rinsing cycles
are enough to avoid any influence from the previous sample.

10.1.1.3 dp Fill
This setting is shown in User Level 6 only.
When high viscous samples are used proper filling can take one or more minutes.
ERAVAP can automatically monitor the status of the filling volume by checking the
pressure inside the measurement cell. In this field the differential pressure to the
barometric pressure can be entered where the filling is assumed to be sufficient.

e.g. barometric pressure = 100kPa (14.5psi), “dp Fill” = 5kPa (0.7psi)

the filling procedure is finished when 95kPa are reached inside the cell and an
additional wait period (1/3 of the time it took to reach 95kPa) has passed. This
additional time assures that the pressure in the cell is almost at barometric
pressure.

“dp Fill” < 5kPa can cause very long filling procedures
“dp Fill” = 0 the pressure monitoring is switched off

10.1.2 Manual Rinsing

This section shows the settings which are used for manual rinsing. Manual rinsing
can be started in the “Measure” menu using the “Rinse” button.
If high viscous samples like crude oil or polymer solutions are measured, a higher
cell temperature than 20°C (68°F) is probably required for an easier and faster
filling/emptying procedure.
However, it is strongly recommended to perform manual rinsing with a solvent such
as toluene, acetone or gasoline after the measurement. In this case lower cell
temperatures are necessary to be able to introduce the cleaning agent. In such a
case the settings for the manual rinsing can be adopted accordingly.

ATTENTION: Do not use acetone for rinsing as long as high pressure valves (up to
2000kPa) for LPG are installed. Acetone will destroy the sealing material of these
valves!
For instruments with valves having a pressure range up to 1000kPa the use of
acetone is no problem.

10.1.2.1 Temperature
This is the measurement cell temperature at which the sample is drawn into the cell.
This temperature should be set at least as low that the vapor pressure of the sample
at this temperature is below barometric pressure. Otherwise it cannot be guaranteed
that enough sample volume is introduced into the measurement cell.
If the filling temperature is set to 20°C (68°F) all gasoline samples can be measured
properly.

112
10.1.2.2 Rinsing Cycles
Sets the number of rinsing cycles performed for additional manual cleaning with the
cleaning agent. In general 5 rinsing cycles are enough to have a clean cell again.

10.1.3 Miscellaneous

10.1.3.1 Alarm
Tick the check box next to “Alarm On/Off” to switch the audio alarm on (off) that
sounds after a measurement is finished.

10.1.3.2 Increment Sample ID

Click the field next to “Increment Sample ID” to switch this function on. Please see
section 6.1.2.1 for a detailed description.

10.1.3.3 Sample Container Volume

Some standard methods require the report of the sample container volume which
must be selected on the “Measure” screen using the respective dropdown menu. By
default 3 volumes (1000ml, 250ml and 100ml) are defined. Additional volumes can
be entered here and will then be shown in the “Measure” menu.

ATTENTION: Press “Save“ to store any changes!

only and appears when User Level 6 is set. When this option is selected a triple
expansion is performed (method D6378) to calculate p-abs and p-gas. These two
parameters are shown at the end of the measurement together with p-tot and DVPE.

For FREE programmable methods the measurement temperature, temperature

equilibrium time and the V/L ratio as well as the correlation formula can be freely
programmed.

117
10.2.3.1 Changing the Correlation Formula
Some methods require one or more correlation formulas. These formulas are
described in the standard methods should not to be changed usually. However if a
method is revised and the formula gets changed it can be updated in this menu.
Select the according formula from the dropdown menu in the “Correlation Formula”
section. By clicking each field the corresponding values can be adapted. Changes
are stored by pressing the “Save” button.

118
10.2.4 PASS / FAIL Notification

then this range can be entered on the “Pass/Fail” tab.

This range is applied for the selected standard method only and can be activated by
clicking the check box next to “Pass/Fail”. Press the ”Save” button to store it.

119
All future measurement results will show either “Pass” or “Fail” at the end of the test
depending on the measurement result whether it falls into the defined range or not. It
will also be stored with the result in the “info” column.

120
10.2.5 Misc Fill
This tab shows miscellaneous parameters and is not accessible for all methods.

Select any of the crude oil measuring methods like ASTM D6377 and select the
“Misc Fill” tab.

Filling: pressure equilibrium

Piston speed:
The piston speed for the filling procedure (not for rinsing) can be adjusted. This is
useful for example when crude oil is measured out of a bottle. With a slow filling
speed outgassing of the crude oil during filling can be avoided.
The range of the filling speed is 100 to 2000. 400 is the recommended default value
and higher values mean faster speeds.

dP Fill:
After filling the pressure variation is observed to ensure a proper filling of the
measuring cell. When the pressure reading is still increasing it is assumed that the

121
sample is still not completely introduced into the measuring cell. dP Fill is the
maximum pressure change in the time period of tmeas (in seconds).

tmeas:
This is the time frame where the pressure may not change more than specified with
dpFill to continue the filling procedure.

tmax:
This is the maximum time the pressure reading may take for the dP fill criterion. The
measurement is continued when this time is expired.

Filling: temperature equilibrium

dP Fill:
For measurements with small V/L ratio (like V/L = 0.02 – 0.5) it is recommended to
set the filling temperature equal to the test temperature due to the expansion of the
liquid. To insure that the sample temperature is equal to the filling temperature when
the sample is introduced into the cell the pressure is monitored. The inlet stays open
for one minute and is then closed for 5 seconds to observe the pressure reading.
When the pressure is still changing after closing the cell it is assumed that the
sample still has not reached the filling temperature. The inlet is then opened again
and in a frequency of 30 seconds the pressure check repeated. When the pressure
is not changing by more than specified by dp Fill in the time frame of tmeas the
measurement is continued. If that criterion cannot be fulfilled after tmax is expired
the measurement is also continued.

tmeas:
This is the time frame where the pressure may not change more than specified with
dpFill to continue the filling procedure.

tmax:
This is the maximum time the pressure reading may take for the dP Fill criterion. The
measurement is continued when this time is expired.

VFill max:
This is the maximum amount of sample filled in the measuring cell for the respective
vapor to liquid ratio.

122
10.2.6 Misc Measure
This tab shows miscellaneous parameters and is not accessible for all methods.

Select any of the crude oil measuring methods like ASTM D6377 and select the
“Misc Measurel” tab.

Shaker Speed:
For Crude oil measurements a shaker has to be installed for faster outgasing of the
sample. The speed of the shaker can be adjusted by this parameter. As higher the
number as faster the shaker and thus faster the outgasing.

tmeas:
This is the measuring time for the dp criterion set in the parameter menu. That
means when the temperature equilibrium time is elapsed then the pressure may not
change by more than dp within tmeas to finish the measurement.

123
10.3 Device Settings
Press the “Device” tab to see change the measurement system settings.

To change parameters press the appropriate field and the keyboard appears to
manipulate them. Changes are stored only when the “Save” button is pressed.

10.3.1 Maximum Volume Counts

Counts of the piston drive from the top to the bottom position (a system dependent
value). Do not perform changes if you are not an expert! Changes will influence the
measurement result and lead to malfunction of the instrument.

10.3.2 Rinsing Volume

Sample volume drawn in for rinsing in piston counts. Default: 8000

10.3.3 Dead Volume

Dead volume of the solenoid valves in piston counts. Default: 260
Please see section 12.2.4 Fine-tuning D5188 Results by the Dead Volume

124
10.3.4 Maximum Pressure Pmax
In order to protect the instrument from too high pressures a software limit is installed.
If this limit is reached the measurement is aborted and the valves are opened to
release the pressure. Allowed values range from 800 to 2000kPa

This limit should not be greater than 1000kPa for instruments which do not have the
high pressure add on (2000kPa pressure sensor and solenoid valves) for LPG
installed. For the high pressure version Pmax can be set as high as 2000kPa.

ATTENTION: If Pmax is set >1000kPa for the low pressure version (1000kPa) the
pressure sensor or solenoid valves can be destroyed.

10.3.5 Measurement Counter

Total number of measurements performed with this instrument.

125
10.4 Filter Change Settings
Press the “Filter” tab to see filter change interval.

Depending on the cleanness of the samples the inlet filter has to be exchanged after
a certain number of measurements. If that is not done then either the results can be
affected (e.g. vapor pressure of gasoline samples can drift low) or the measurement
cell cannot be filled properly and the filling procedure is stopped. To avoid these and
other effects a warning to chance the filter can be set after a certain number of
measurements. After each measurement the “Filter change due” value is reduced by
one.

126
When the counter is down at 0 a warning will be displayed in the “Measure” menu as
follows:

127
If an autosampler is connected the filter change intervals can be set individually for
each port on the “Filter” tab.

128
When an autosampler is connected and a filter change is due the following screen is
shown:

In this case the filters of port 1,2 and 3 of the autosampler must be exchanged.

129
Further measurements can still be performed but it is strongly recommended to
exchange the filter, otherwise the effects described above can occur.

After changing the inlet filter reset the “Filter change due” counter by pressing the
“Reset” button to the predefined “Interval for filter change” value.

The “Interval for filter change” value e.g. 500 (either this number is set to low values
as a precaution or determined experimentally with the products at site) can be set in
the field on the right.

130
When an autosampler is connected press the reset button on the yellow colored
lines after the filters of these ports have been exchanged.

ATTENTION: Do not clean and reuse the filter. If not all sediments are washed out
and the filter is installed upside down bigger particles than 200µ can get into the
system and damage the valves or pressure transducer.

131
10.5 Measurement Screen Settings
Press the “Screen” tab to see the option for the Measure screen.

Select the option you want to see on the “Measure” screen. Press “Save” to store
changes. If all options are selected the “Measure” screen for ASTM D5191 will look

135
11.2.1 User Level
In this section the user level can be set to limit the accessibility of the different
menus. User level 1 is the lowest with most restrictions. Only a measurement can be
performed. All other parameters are not accessible or are even not shown and thus
cannot be modified. This level allows unskilled employees to run measurements
without any risk of doing something wrong.
The higher the user level is set, the more menus are accessible. User Level 6 gives
full accessibility to the instrument’s software. To change the user level you have to
enter a password.

11.2.2 Password
When the instrument is delivered the default password is “123456”. Enter the
password and press “enter”. If the password was entered correctly user level 6 is
selected and lower levels can be used.

11.2.2.1 Changing the Password

The password can be changed by setting user level 6. Then enter the old password
in the field next to “Old Password”, the new password next to the field “New
Password” and repeat the new password next to “Repeat”. Press the “Save” button.

Ask your local representative or eralytics for a printer form template. A description is
included in the printer form file. Use any “.print file”, modify it and save it with a new
filename with the extension .print on a memory stick.

ATTENTION: If you modify a file ending with “-default.print” and you do not rename
it, it may be overwritten by the next software upgrade.

Connect the memory stick to an USB port at the rear panel. After a few seconds the
memory stick is automatically mounted, press the “Load” button to load the new file.
Select the file type “Printer forms (*.print)” and load the new file.
Afterwards the new printer template must be selected on the “Printer” tab from the
“Form” dropdown menu. All printouts will be formatted according to the new printer
form file.

138
11.3.3.2 Customized Computer output (LIMS) format
If you want to customize the output for your LIMS system the respective
eravap.comp file has to be modified and loaded. Ask your local representative or
eralytics for the eravap.comp template file. A description for modification is included
in the file. Modify the eravap.comp file on your PC and then transfer it to a memory
stick.

ATTENTION: Do NOT rename the file. Only the eravap.comp file is read by the
instrument.

Connect the memory stick to one USB port at the rear panel. After a few seconds it
is automatically mounted, press the “Load” button to load the new file. Select the file
type “All(*.*)” and load the eravap.comp file.
The automatic computer output will be formatted according to the eravap.comp file.

11.3.4 Language Settings

Select the language from the dropdown menu. Afterwards the instrument will
automatically restart and then shows the “Measure”, “Results” and “Settings” menus
in the selected language. All other menus will remain English.

11.3.4.2 Codepage for Output Files

Some languages need a certain code page to show the stored results correctly on a
PC (especially when they are viewed in Excel) or if they are transferred to a LIMS
system.
This is most important for Cyrillic. All other installed languages are working with
default or UTF8 settings properly.

Default: the codepage is automatically selected according to the

language
ISO 8859-1: Latin-1, western European codepage
UTF8: global codepage (Unicode)
IBM866: IBM codepage for Cyrillic
CP1251: Windows codepage for Cyrillic
KOI8-R: Russian codepage for Cyrillic

139
11.4 Printer

After the measurement is finished the result is transferred to the printer

PostScript:
For printers with USB connection being able to use post script this option can be
used to print e.g. Cyrillic, Chinese or Japanese print outs.

PJL:
Printer Job Language. Some laser printers need PJL to be activated to start a print
job. If marked, the instrument sends a string to the printer before each print job.

Page:
Sends a form feed command to the printer

Abort:
Aborts the current print job

Test:
A string will be sent to the selected port to test the printer connection.

More:
Pressing this button, a new section appears where three strings can be defined
which can be used on the print outs or for LIMS. These strings are freely
programmable and can be e.g. the name of Location, an internal instrument ID etc.
The strings must then be set in the output file “eravap.comp” as well as in the “.print”
files (see section 11.3.3 Option Files).

141
Press “OK” to return to the printer menu.

142

Status “OK” is displayed.

Now after each measurement a string will be sent through the serial interface which
has to be processed by a LIMS program. For tests the string can be displayed with a
terminal program as well (e.g. Hyper Terminal, Tera Term etc.).

148
If the connection fails or the settings are wrong an error message will be shown.

11.5.2 Ethernet Connection

When ERAVAP is connected to a network (see section 11.6 Network) then the
“Network Share” option can be used for direct result file transfer to a network. There
is no additional software required for this option. The format of the result file is
defined in the “eravap.comp” file (see section 11.3.3 Option Files)

149
11.5.2.1 Settings
In the “Settings” section select the Port “Network Share” from the dropdown menu.

Enter the necessary information in the “Network Share” and “Output” sections:

Server: Name of the computer

Share: Shared folder name (only the displayed folder name, not the path) on
the network. The folder must be write-enabled.
User: Login name of a user of this computer
Password: Password of this user

In the “Output” section any file name and file extension can be selected.
%m is a placeholder for the selected method

e.g. if ASTM D5191 is selected in the “Measure” menu.

“Method %m”.“csv” results are saved as “Method ASTMD5191.csv”.
“%m”.“txt” results are saved as “ASTMD5191.txt”

When the results should be appended to the defined file select the “Append”
checkbox.

When the “Append” checkbox is not selected then with each new result is saved to a
new file overwriting an old file of the same name.

ATTENTION: Files are not overwritten when %d is used. In this case a new file is
created for each result.

11.5.2.2 Getting Connected

Make sure the network connection (see section 11.6 Network) is established and the
Ethernet cable is connected. When the above mentioned parameters are set press
the “Test” button. A test file will be sent to the defined folder.

If the test file was sent successfully, the Status “OK” is displayed. Now after each
measurement a result file (with the format defined in the “eravap.comp” file – see
section 11.3.3 Option Files) will be sent to the defined folder.

If the connection is faulty or the settings are not correct an error message will be
shown.

150
11.6 Network
ERAVAP can be connected to a local area network (LAN) for e.g. LIMS
communication by the Ethernet port at the rear panel.

Name: Freely selectable instrument name on the network

Domain: Name of your domain
IP Address: IP address of the instrument
IP Mask: Subnet mask (standard 255.255.255.0)
Gateway: IP address of the gateway server

All necessary information for communication with a LAN or computer can be entered
on the “Net” tab in the “System” menu.

The name of ERAVAP is given in the text field “Name”, you can give it any name, but
you can use only letters and numbers (and the underscore).

If you have a DHCP server on your network and you want to use it, then the
checkbox “use DHCP” has to be checked. Press the “Apply” button to connect to the
network.
ERAVAP will then automatically get an IP address and connect to the LAN. All fields
except for the “Name” field will be grayed out since this information is given by the
DHCP server.

ERAVAP can then be recognized on the LAN either by its name (given in the box
“Name”) if you have a local DNS server, or by its IP address.

152
153
If you do not have a DHCP Server you must fill the “IP Address” and “IP Mask” field
(Please ask your system administrator about these values):

The “Domain” and “Gateway” fields are currently not used. Maybe there will
applications which need this information in the future. After filling these fields press
the “Apply” button.

158
12 Calibration Menu
Press the “Calibration” menu to make changes to the instrument calibration. In this
menu the temperature and pressure calibration is performed.

12.1 Calibration
The analyzer is designed to operate over a long period of time without recalibration.
However, annual factory calibration and service are highly recommended. Your
company‘s quality assurance program may also require calibration at a more
frequent interval. A simple method to verify that the analyzer is functioning correctly
is to run a test using a known quality control sample. If the test fails to achieve the
method‘s stated precision, calibration is required. Please contact your local agent or
eralytics GmbH for service assistance.

To perform the calibration verification, eralytics GmbH recommends using ASTM

crosscheck samples because these samples have gone through testing by a large
number of participating laboratories; thus, they are very reliable. The results of the
tests should match the average result of the quality control sample within the
precision of the method.

159
Since the average result of a quality control sample is the average over a range of
measurement values, it does not necessarily mean that every measurement gives
the same result. As long as the analyzer result does not differ from the average
value of the quality control sample by more than the method‘s standard limits the
analyzer calibration is acceptable.

12.1.1 Temperature Calibration

For the temperature calibration, use a certified reference sensor with an accuracy of
at least 0.02°C (0.01°F). The sensor must have a diameter of 4mm (0.15”) and a
length of at least 150 mm (5.9”).

For the temperature calibration only the case, which is fixed by two screws on the
rear panel, must be removed.

Screws to open the analyzer

160
Put some drops of oil for good heat contact into the calibration bore (left front bore of
the measurement cell).

161
Insert the sensor through the bore of the aluminum plate with the three gear wheels
into the calibration bore of the measurement cell.

162
The temperature calibration is performed at two calibration points.
In the calibration menu set “Ts” to a low temperature, recommended 10°C (50°F)
and press the “Set” button to start the temperature regulation of the measurement
cell. The temperature regulator is switched on, indicated by the checkbox next to the
“Set” button.

Wait until the temperature reading “T” in the “Temperature” section is stable at the
set temperature.

Enter the displayed temperature of your reference sensor into the field “T lo” and
press the “Cal” button next to the input field.

Change the temperature “Ts” to a high temperature, recommended 90°C (194°F),

press “Set” again to regulate to the set temperature and wait until the temperature
reading “T” is stable.

Enter the displayed temperature of your reference sensor in the field “T hi” and press
the “Cal” button next to the input field.

Press the “Save” button to store the calibration.

163
12.1.2 Pressure Calibration
Before the pressure sensor is calibrated make sure the coefficient file for the
mathematical pressure linearization is loaded. This can be seen by the serial number
of the pressure sensor shown in the “Pressure:” section.

If the serial number is 0 (Pressure: Sensor # 0000) or the pressure sensor was
exchanged the linearization file must be loaded.
This file can be requested from eralytics GmbH and is automatically supplied with
each pressure sensor. Copy this file to a memory stick and connect it the ERAVAP,
wait about 10 seconds and then press the “Load coeff” button.

Select the directory “mnt\memstick”. This is the root directory of the memory stick.

Select the file with the respective serial number and press the “Open” button. The file
is loaded and the serial number of the sensor should be shown in “Pressure:”
section. Press “Save” to store the file permanently.

Now the pressure sensor calibration which is performed at vacuum and barometric
pressure can be performed. In the “T-control” section of the “Calibration” menu set
“Ts” to 37.8°C (100°F) and press the “Set” button to start the temperature regulation
of the measurement cell.

164
Wait until the temperature reading “T” in the “Temperature” section is stable at the
set temperature.

Remove any filling tube from the inlet and then connect a vacuum pump to the outlet
of the instrument. Make sure the vacuum pump is capable to reduce the pressure to
at least 0.01kPa (0.001psi) and there is no leakage in the vacuum line.

Switch the vacuum pump on. Enter 0 into the field “p lo” and press the “Cal” button
next to “p lo”. The inlet and outlet valves of the measurement cell are automatically
opened and closed several times to flush the cell. Finally the cell is evacuated for
about 20 seconds. Then the calibration parameters are automatically adjusted to set
the pressure reading to zero.

165
Remove the vacuum pump, enter the barometric pressure (use a certified
barometer) into the field “p hi” and press the “Cal” button next to “p hi”. The pressure
reading is automatically adjusted to the entered barometric pressure.

Press the “Save” button to store the calibration.

12.1.2.1 Linearization of the Pressure Sensor over a Temp. Range

The pressure sensor is not necessarily linear over the whole temperature range. Due
to that reason the sensor must be linearized over the whole temperature range. This
can be done in the ”p-T lin” Menu.

Before the linearization of the pressure sensor is performed make sure the pressure
sensor is well calibrated.

After pressing the “p-T lin” button, the following menu appears:

166
p act: actual pressure reading
T act: actual temperature reading
T set: temperature to be regulated
T equ: temperature equilibrium time
T Range: temperature range for the linearization

The linearization of the pressure sensor is performed in 5°C (10°F) steps at vacuum
and barometric pressure. In many cases the non-linearity at a given temperature
over the whole pressure range is only an offset. But in some cases the non-linearity
also depends on the pressure. Therefore the correction can be performed at vacuum
and barometric pressure to determine the non-linearity dependent on the pressure.

Select one of the following linearization options in the “Cal mode” section.

Cal pAir (Offset):

The non-linearity over the whole temperature range is determined at barometric
pressure. The determined offset to the barometric pressure at the pressure
calibration temperature is added for p0 and pAir.
This kind of linearization is in many cases sufficient since the non-linearity of the
pressure transducer at a given temperature is for the whole pressure range just an
offset (and not a slope depending on the actual pressure). Furthermore, if a vacuum
pump is not available it is the only option for the linearization of the pressure sensor.

167
Cal p0 and pAir:
This is the most accurate form of the pressure sensor linearization. For this
linearization a vacuum pump has to be connected to the outlet of the instrument.
The instrument regulates to the linearization temperature points and applies
automatically vacuum and barometric pressure to the pressure sensor.

The non-linearity over the whole temperature range is determined at vacuum and
barometric pressure. The pressure reading is then corrected according to the
determined offset.

The following two options “Cal pAir” and “Cal p0” can be used for correction of either
p0 or pAir
If you run p0 and then pAir it is equivalent to the option Cal p0 and pAir, but with two
calibration runs.

Cal pAir
The non-linearity over the whole temperature range is determined at barometric
pressure and only the pAir value is compensated.

Cal p0
The non-linearity over the whole temperature range is determined just at vacuum
pressure. The vacuum pump must be connected to the outlet of ERAVAP and
running.

ATTENTION: After the calibration run is finished do not forget to store the calibration
by pressing the “Save” button.

12.1.2.2 Linearization of the Pressure Sensor over a Pressure Range

The pressure sensor is not necessarily linear over the whole pressure range at
constant temperature. Therefore, the sensor can be linearized. This can be done in
the “p-lin” Menu.

ATTENTION: Before the linearization of the pressure sensor is performed make sure
the pressure sensor and temperature sensor are well calibrated.

Perform some test measurements with Pentane, Propane or Butane (>99.94%

purity) first using a standard method via the “Measure” menu. If the results deviate
from the literature values you can correct the pressure sensor’s linearity as follows:

168
In the “Calibration” menu

Press the “p-lin” button and the following menu appears:

169
Enter the measured values in the “actual” column and the literature values in the
”nominal” column.

If the values are entered incorrectly an error message will appear and the whole
linearization will not be accepted.

170
If the actual value differs more than 10% from the nominal pressure an error will
appear as well.

Not all 10 linearization points have to be used.

Store the programmed linearization by pressing the “Save” button.

171
12.1.3 Calibration History
In the “Cal History” menu previous calibration data can be restored as well as reset
to the factory calibration. Additionally a reminder interval for the calibration can be
set.

Press the “Cal History” button

172
The following menu appears:

173
12.1.3.1 Calibration Reminder Interval
Go to the “Calibration” menu und press the “Cal History” button. In the “Calibration
reminder” section the interval is shown as well as the date of the next alert.
Depending on your requirements set the reminder interval. Most standard methods
recommend a half year or an annual calibration interval.

The new reminder interval is stored when the “Reset” button is pressed. When the
calibration is due according to the set interval a warning will be displayed

174
The warning is switched off if the interval is set to 0 and the “Reset” button is
pressed.

175
12.1.3.2 Restore old Calibration values
Go to the “Calibration” menu und press the “Cal History” button. Previous calibration
values and the factory calibration values can be restored.

Press the ”Load” button to restore either the previous or the factory calibration values
for temperature and pressure reading.

The “Save” button in the “Calibration” menu must be pressed to store the loaded
calibration values.

ATTENTION: Only the Zero, Offset and Gain values are restored from the
temperature and pressure calibration. The “p-T lin” and “p-lin” values are not
restored!

176
12.2 Substances Calibration
ERAVAP offers the possibility to perform a single point calibration of either
temperature or pressure by measuring a pure substance with known vapor pressure.
It is also possible to directly enter a temperature or pressure bias to correct results.

This so called substance calibration is not according to any standard method and
does not replace the periodically calibration of the temperature or pressure sensor.
But in case the accepted reference value (ARV) of a reference fluid cannot be
reached and calibration tools are not available then a substance calibration might
help to get a proper reading from the instrument to be able to perform urgent
measurements. However a recalibration of the temperature and pressure sensors is
strongly recommended and should be performed immediately. Only then accurate
results can be guaranteed.

In the ”Calibration” menu, press the “Sub-Cal” button to enter the substance
calibration menu.

177
12.2.1 Pressure Calibration

Method:
Select the standard method which needs calibration from the dropdown menu next to
“Method”.

standard method. The maximum accepted correction is 3kPa (0.44psi).

This offset correction value can be entered manually or a measurement can be

performed using the according Cal-Substance. The test measurement can be
initiated by pressing the “Run” button. After the measurement the bias is
automatically shown in the field next to dp-Correction.

If you accept the dp-Correction press the “Save” button to store it.

Curve methods like ASTM D6378 Curve do not allow to run a sample for an
automatic determination of the dP-Correction value. For those the dp-Correction can
be entered manually only.

179
12.2.2 Temperature Calibration

Method:
Select the standard method to be calibrated from the dropdown menu next to
“Method”.
The calibration is valid for the selected method only!!!

Cal-Type:

used, the nominal temperature must be set for the substance where the nominal
vapor pressure is reached.

dT-Correction:
This is the temperature bias used to correct the measurement result of the chosen
standard method. The maximum accepted correction is 0.5°C (1°F).

This offset correction value can be entered manually or a measurement can be

performed using the according Cal-Substance. The test measurement can be
initiated by pressing the “Run” button. After the measurement the bias is
automatically shown in the field next to dT-Correction.

If you accept the dT-Correction press the “Save” button to store it.

Curve methods like ASTM D6378 Curve do not allow to run a sample for an
automatic determination of the dT-Correction value. For those the dT-Correction can
be entered manually only.

181
12.2.3 Temperature Calibration of ASTM D5188
If the temperature and pressure calibration was successfully performed and the
T(V/L) results of pure substances still have to be adjusted, then a two point
temperature correction can be performed.

ATTENTION: If the results for pure substances are fine but not for gasoline then
proceed with the section 12.2.4 Fine-tuning D5188 Results by the Dead Volume.

Make sure that the calibration is switched off. The “On” checkbox must not be
checked in the “Substance Calibration” menu. If it is checked, click it and then press
the “Save” button to store.

182
Then go to the “Measure” menu and run two different reference samples like
Pentane, 2,2 Dimethylbutane or Hexane.

If the results differ more than 0.2°C (0.4°F) from the reference values (see below)
you can go back to the “Substance Calibration” menu and enter the standard values
as well as the measurement results.

Reference values according to ASTM D5188:

Pentane: 35.8°C ( 96.4°F)
2,2 Dimethylbutane: 49.4°C (120.9°F)
n-Hexane: 68.3°C (155.0°F) ….. this value is only listed in the ASTM
research report

183
The “Substance-Calibration” section shows a two point calibration.
TNom0 nominal value of the first calibration substance
e.g. n-Pentane 35.8°C (96.4°F)
TNom1 nominal value of the second calibration substance
e.g. Hexane 68.3°C (155.0°F) or 2,2Dimethylbutane 49.4°C (120.9°F)
T0 measured value of first calibration substance
T1 measured value of second calibration substance
On The calibration values are enabled when the checkbox next to “On” is
ticked

Enter the nominal and measured values and switch the calibration on (check “On”).
Press “Save” to store the new calibration data.

e.g. TNom0 = 35.8°C (96.4°F) T0 = 35.7°C (96.2°F)

TNom1 = 68.3°C (155.0°F) T1 = 68.0°C (154.4°F)

If you calibrate with one substance (e.g. n-Pentane) only then enter the same bias
for T0 and T1 at different temperatures.
e.g. TNom0 = 35.8°C (96.4°F) T0 = 35.7°C (96.2°F)
TNom1 = 68.3°C (155.0°F) T1 = 68.2°C (154.8°F)

12.2.4 Fine-tuning D5188 Results by the Dead Volume
Exit the “Calibration” menu and enter the “Settings” menu and then the “Device” tab.
The following screen appears:

Dead Volume:
Dead volume of the solenoid valves in piston counts. Default: 260
The range is from 1 – 500 counts.

This setting has a significant influence for D5188 measurements using samples with
a steep T/VL curve like gasoline. The T(V/L=20) result will increase by approximately
0.6°C if the dead volume is increased by 100 counts.

Pure substances like Pentane, 2,2 Dimethylbutane or Hexane have a pretty flat T/VL
curve so an increase or decrease of the dead volume has almost no influence on the
result.

Perform a few ASTM D5188 measurements with your reference gasoline. If a

significant deviation from the nominal value is observed the dead volume can be
adjusted. If the result is higher than expected increase the “Dead Volume” counts
and vice versa. Press “Save” to store any changes.

13.1 Live Values
The actual temperature and pressure readings are shown.

13.2 Motor Tab

13.2.1 Piston Motor Section

The piston motor can be moved and tested. When the motor moves down then the
valves are automatically opened to protect the pressure sensor.

Position: Current position of the piston motor.

Home: 0 position (= top position), the checkbox is ticked when the hall sensor
at the top position is triggered.
Goto: Enter the desired position of the motor in counts, but not more than the
Maximum Volume Counts (Can be found on the “Device” tab in the
“Settings” menu. Otherwise the pressure sensor can be destroyed).
Home: Moves the motor to the Home position (= 0 +/-3).

13.2.2 Shaker Motor Section

The shaker motor can be actuated here.

ATTENTION: The shaker motor is not installed in every instrument since it is not
necessary for every standard method.

Position: Current position of the piston motor.

Goto: Moves the shaker motor until the entered steps are reached.
Left: Motor turns anti clockwise
Right: Motor turns clockwise

13.2.3 Valves Section

The valves can be actuated and a leakage test at low and high pressures can be
performed.

OUT: Open and close the outlet valve

IN: Open and close the inlet valve

187
13.2.3.1 Leakage Test
ATTENTION: Before a leakage test can be performed the measurement cell must be
very well cleaned. Residues must be evaporated and removed using a vacuum
pump (see section 13.5.1 Cell Cleaning Procedure) or the valves have to be
dismantled and cleaned (only for well-trained service personal). Otherwise the
leakage test will be significantly influenced by the sample’s vapor pressure.

ERAVAP has a very high quality valve system installed. Furthermore, the valves are
protected by an inlet filter to remove particles. A leakage is very unlikely as long as
not sticky or very high viscous (>300mPas) samples are measured.

However a leak can be detected easily by the measurement results using a

reference sample. Therefore it is not necessary to perform this procedure more often
than every one or two years by a factory trained technician.

Low p Connect a vacuum pump to the outlet of ERAVAP and press the
button. The pressure reading at the beginning of the leak test and the
pressure readings at the beginning and the end of the test will be
shown after about 5 minutes below the buttons. A leakage will cause a
pressure increase of > 1.5kPa. Do not forget to remove the vacuum
pump after the first reading is shown.
High p Remove the vacuum pump and press the button. The pressure reading
at the beginning and the end of the test will be shown after about 5
minutes below the buttons. A pressure drop of > 5kPa indicates a
possible leakage.

This menu is for well-trained service personal only. Do not press any button when
you are not familiar with the instrument.

13.5.1 Cell Cleaning Procedure

When the measurement cell was contaminated with water, methanol, ethanol or any
other polar sample then a quick cleaning can be performed. Attach a vacuum pump
at the outlet of the instrument and set the cleaning temperature slightly above (3-
5°C) the boiling point of the contaminant. Turn on the vacuum pump and press The
“Start” button. The measurement cell will be automatically evacuated and heated to
the “Cleaning Temperature” for a quick cleaning procedure.

13.5.2 Refill Oil

Refill Oil: Press this button to refill eralytics’ piston oil. A detailed description can be
found in the service manual.

192
14 Shut Down Procedures
14.1 Instrument Shut Down
Press the main power switch at the front of the analyzer. The red LED is illuminated
until the instrument is off.

ATTENTION: ERAVAP should not be disconnected from the main power source
until the red LED turns off.

14.2 Reset
When the instrument does not respond anymore a reset can be performed. Push the
main power switch for 5 seconds at the front of the analyzer. The red LED is
illuminated until the instrument is turned off. Push the main power button again to
boot the instrument.

193
15 Software upgrade using a USB Memory stick
1) Create the following folder on a memory stick: “erasoft\eravap”

2) Copy the eravap.zip file into this folder (erasoft\eravap\eravap.zip)

ATTENTION: Do not unzip the file!!!

3) Connect the memory stick to one of the USB ports at the rear panel of the
instrument and turn the instrument on. During start up the new software is
automatically loaded. In the "System" menu you should see the new version
number.

16 Maintenance
16.1 Changing the Inlet Filter
If a warning for filter change appears the inlet filter must be exchanged. Remove the
inlet tube and unscrew the metal filter holder anti clockwise. The filter can be
exchanged now.

ATTENTION: Reinstall the filter holder carefully to avoid cross threading of the
plastic material.

195
16.2 Changing the Luer / Quick connector Inlet
For samples like LPG or some crude oils it is necessary to fill the measurement cell
with pressurized samples. For this reason the quick fit inlet is used. Just unscrew the
Luer connector, exchange the filter if necessary and install the quick connector nut.
The instrument is ready for filling with pressurized samples.
ATTENTION: For safety reasons the new quick connector is equipped with a valve
and can be used only with the new quick fit inlet, whereas the old quick connector
(without valve, there is no obvious visual difference between those two) can be used
with both, the old and new quick fit inlet.

17 Error Messages
If one of the following error messages appears please contact your local dealer or
directly Eralytics GmbH: service@eralytics.com

17.1 Error Piston Motor

This message appears when the piston does not reach the desired position.

17.2 Error Pgas

This happens when an error appears calculating Pgas.

17.3 Error Pressure Limit Exceeded

This error indicates that the pressure reading is out of range. The standard range is
0-1000kPa and the high pressure range for LPG measurements 0-2000kPa

197
18 Filling the Floating Piston Cylinder (FPC)
The below shown picture shows a FPC from Welker which can be used for crude oil
and LPG measurement.

1) Open the purge or product valve and pressurize the cylinder (compressed air
is fine) through the Pre-charge Valve to move the piston forward until the
volume of the product side is almost zero. A pressure of 200kPa will be
enough to move it.
2) Close the pre-charge valve (keep the 200kPa if wanted).
3) Connect the LPG or crude to the purge valve (close the product valve) and fill
the FPC. The indicator rod must move backwards until the pressure in the
pre-charge chamber and the product chamber are equal. The final position of
the indicator rod is dependent on the vapor pressure of the LPG or crude oil
respectively. The reached pressure is shown on both manometers of the FPC.
4) Close the purge valve and connect the FPC through the product valve to the
ERAVAP.
5) Open the product valve.
6) Start the measurement.
