2 Top element 6.000 X 4.400 4.40M 19.360t

5.1 Design of Bottom Element :

RC = 25.884t RD = 24.895t
RE = 21.866t RF = 21.453t

l = 600
RA = RB = 13285kg 24 24
L = 648

BM = (W /8) (2L – l) = (26569 / 8) (2 X 648 – 600) = 2311503kgcms.

It is proposed to provide skin plate out of 10mm plate. After allowing corrosion
allowance of 1.5mm the effective thickness is 8.5mm.

The co-acting width of skin plate is given by 2VB.

L = 648cm B1 = 45/2=22.5cm B2 = 45cm
L / B1 = 648 / 22.5 = 28.8 V1 = 0.98
L / B2 = 648 / 45 = 14.4 V2 = 0.80

Co-acting width = 0.98 X 22.5 + 0.80 X 45 = 58.05=58.0cm

However the co-acting width is limited to 40t + B as per IS 800

= 40 X 0.85 + 18 = 52cm

Sectional proposed is as follows :

Area = 165.6cm2
IXX = 76945.0cm4

Z1 = 3680.0cm3

Z2 = 3837.0cm3

Z3 = 2503.0cm3

i) Bending stress on U/S of skip plate = 2311503 / 3680 = 628.0kg/ cm2 < 1148kg/cm2
ii) Bending stress on D/S of skin plate = 2311503 / 3837 = 602.0kg/ cm2 < 1148kg/cm2
iii) Bending stress on D/S of flange = 2311503/ 2503 = 923.0kg/cm2 < 1148kg/cm2
iv) Shear stress = 13285 / (46.56 X 1.02) = 280.0kg/cm2 < 892kg/cm2

Check for deflection :

Permissible deflection = L / 800 = 648 / 800 = .81cms.
Actual deflection  = {W / 384 EI} {8L3 – 4Ll2 + l3}

Weld at Point 1 : Weld between skin plate and U/S flange :
F1 = S A y / 2 I = (13285 X 52 X 0.85 X 17.83) / (2 X 76945)] = 68kg/cm length
Proposed 6mm fillet having strength of = 0.7 X 0.6 X 892 = 375kg / cm length.

Weld at Point 2 : Weld between D/S flange and Plate :

F3 = S A y / 2 I = [13285 X 15 X 1.0 X 32.11] / (2 X 76945) = 42kg/cm length
Proposed 6mm fillet having strength of 321kg/cm length

Design of Web stiffeners :

d/t ratio = 50 / 1.02 = 49.0 > 85
Hence no need of Web stiffeners.

7.8 Design of Dogging Beam :

The arrangement is shown in drawing referred above.

a) The dogging beam is supporting the gate at bottom when it is fully loaded for
maintenance.

Gate weight = 13500kg

Load on each dogging beam = 6750kg

Note : All welds provided shall be of full strength welds.

7.9 Design of Side Guide Roller :

Total weight of gate = 13.5t
It is proposed to provide 4Nos. of guide rollers. As per IS 4623 a minimum load of
5% of the total weight of gate recommended for the design of guide roller.
Weight of gate = 13.5t
Load on each guide roller @ 5% of gate weight =0.675t
Size of the guide roller provided = 120mm dia. X 50mm. (Thickness of side guide)
Material : Wheel cast steel IS 1030 Grade 280 – 520W
Yp = 280MPa = 2856kg/cm2
UTS = 520 Mpa = 5304kg/cm2
Allowable contact stress = 1.6 X 5.304 = 8.486t/cm 2
Contact stress fC = 0.418  (PE / rl)
= 0.418  (0.675 X 2047) / (6 X 5.0) = 2.84t/cm2 < 8.486t/cm2

7.10 Design of Sill Beam :

The sill beam is generally adopted to resist the self weight of gate. Since the
sill beam is fully embedded in concrete and is to be checked for bearing in concrete
we have not provided any designs.

Earlier we used to provide tee cut out of girder for sill beam. We found that
while cutting the distortion occurred is problem in perfect seating and sealing. To
avoid that we are providing full girder to achieve the results. This also as practiced
by CWC at present

Gate weight = 13500kg

Length = 600cm (Vent)

Skin Plate thickness = 10mm

Sill beam provided = ISMB 200 X 100

Flange thickness = 0.57mm

The weight of gate acting on the sill beam is UDL.

 Load per cm length = 13500 / 600 = 22.5kg/cm length

Effective bearing width on concrete by 45 dispersion = 1.0 + 2 X (0.57) = 2.14cm

Bearing stress on concrete = 22.5 / 2.14 = 10.5kg/cm 2 < 52kg/cm2

9.0 Hoist Capacity Calculations:

1) Weight of gate with lifting arrangement = 3700kg
2) Roller friction
F = P/R(fa X r + fr)
Where F = Roller friction in kg
P = Water thrust = 39063kg
R = 9cm
fa = Coeff. of friction = 0.015 for Antifriction bearing
r = 3.00cm (Bearing ID 40, OD 80 and 23thick)
fr = 0.1
 F = (39063 / 9) (0.015 X 3.0 + 0.1) = 629kg
3) Seal friction :
Side seal friction: 2 X  X b X h X l
= (2 X 0.2 X 3.8 X 0.3125 X 625) = 297.0kg
4) Friction due to seal pre compression = 725.0kg
5) Guide friction = 185kg

Hoist capacity required:

Self weight of gate : 3700.00
Roller Friction : 629.00
Seal Friction : 297.00
Friction due to seal pre compression : 725.00
Guide friction : 185.00
