Sample Calculation - CR Gate

This document provides a sample calculation for the structural design of a 1200mm x 1200mm regulator gate for a canal rehabilitation project. It calculates the loads on the gate from two water level scenarios and selects the plate thickness and reinforcement needed to withstand the loads. The maximum calculated deflection of 0.7mm is less than the allowable deflection of 1.5mm, confirming that the structural design is satisfactory.

Ref-2 - Technical Standard for Gates and Penstock, Hydraulic gates and Penstock
Association – Japan

Ref-3 - Technical Specification Given in the tender document Sections – Electro

Mechanical Works

Material Specifications

𝜎𝑦
Allowable Tensile/ Sheer Stress 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙 =

1
Gate arrangement is as shown below

GATE Load Case 1 Load Case 2

Assuming at fully closed position of the gate, Water level is at FSL condition ( Load Case 1 )

Total water pressure on a gate slide = hρg x A

1.2
= 2
x ρg x1.2 x 1.2

= 8.64 x 103 N

Consider very high flood condition, it is assumed that water flows 500mm above the spill crest. In that
case, total water pressure, ( Load Case 2 )
1.2
= (0.5 + 2
) x ρg x1.2 x 1.2

= 15.84 x 103

15.84
[Ratio= = 1.83]
8.64

Note - other loads, Wave height due to wind/ sediment pressure, seismic effect etc are negligible so
they are not considered for the load calculation

2
SELECTION OF STRUCTURAL MEMBERS OF THE GATE SLIDE

It is considered that the gate leaf is fabricated by thick steel sheet and reinforced at one side by steel
flats

Plate size – 1200 x1200 ( assuming that all four edges are simply supported)

For Plate thickness calculation, consider plate size 1200 x 1200 mm

Maximum possible water head = 500 + 1200 = 1700 mm

= 1.7 m

1.2 m

H = 1.7 m
1.2 m

The plate thickness is calculated with theory of plastic based on the theory of elasticity

Design water head = 1.7 x 2.0 m { load F.O.S = 2.0}

= 3.4 m

Water Pressure acting = hρg

= 3.4 ρg N/m2

= 3.4 x 10 x 1000 x N/m2

=0.034 N/mm2

3
SELECTED PLATE WIDTH = 19 mm

Considering all the 4 edges are simply supported,

the ratio of support length = b/a

= 1200/ 1200

= 1.0

{ As per NBR – 8883 Standard }

k a2
Bending stress = σ = ± p
100 𝑡2

Where: k = non diemension factor taken from table 5.1 NBR 8883

σ = Bending stress ( N/mm2)

p = Pressure ( N/mm2)

a = support length (cm, mm)

t = plate thickness (cm, mm)

In referring to table 5.1 – NBR 8883

When α = 1.0, kσ1x = 28.7

k – values
kσ1y = 28.7

k a2 28.7 12002
σ1x = ± 100 p 𝑡 2 =± 100
x 0.034 192

= ± 38.92N/mm2

σ1y = ± 38.92N/mm2

Allowable Stress of the material = Yield stress / 2

= 112 N/mm2

The Applied stress is less than the allowable stress

So Plate is in safe condition

4
 Check for deflection of the skin plate

The maximum deflection is occurred at the center of the plate & it is given by δ max
α𝜌𝑎4
δ max = { Clause 5.4 – JIS}
𝐸 𝑡3

; E = 206,000 N/mm2

α = coefficient taken From table 5.4,

b/a = 1.0 , α = 0.0138

0.0138 x 0.034 x12004

Therefore; δ max = 206,000 x 193

= 0.7 mm
1200
Therefore; The allowable deflection = = 1.5mm
800

δ max << δ allowable

Therefore the condition satisfied
