CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Our daily lives have changed substantially as time moves forward because of

technological advancements. The contribution of electronic gadgets made our life

more enjoyable and convenient for us. There are many different gadgets on the

market, such as smartphones, tablets and much more. Electronic gadgets plays an

important role on many of us especially on students.It helps them to improve their

learning skills and enhance their knowledge. On the contrary,expect that there will be

bad effects when students spend too much time on gadgets.

Electronic gadgets has negatively affect every individual user especially

students.It can be the fact that they can become addictive and students tends to neglect

everything else like their social life as well as their academic life.Gadgets help us in

various ways in life and of course there is no way we’re going to deny it,But when we

use it for more than the required time, it means we are addicted to this technology.The

high duration of gadget usage can cause several negative impacts.Generally, this

addictive behavior is influenced by factors from within individuals who have not been

able to control the limits in the use of smartphones to make the teen experience

addiction (Ningtyas, 2013).

Preventing and regulating your restrictions is one of the most effective solutions

to this problem. Being hooked to electronic gadgets is difficult to overcome since

we've been accustomed to it and they've become a part of our daily lives, To help the
students from being addicted to electronic devices, parents can play an important role

in preventing addiction. First and foremost, parents should establish a time restriction

for their children's use of electronic devices. Students can also prevent it by managing

their time and doing things that makes them happy, or by engaging in physical

activities such as exercise, which will reduce health risks and help them be more

productive in their life much more in their studies.

Objective of the Study

General Objectives:

The general objective of this study is to find out the advantages and disadvantages of

electronic gadgets on the academic performance among the selected Grade 12 Tvl

Students.

Specific Objectives:

This study specifically seeks to answer the following questions

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age,

1.2. Sex

2. What is the level of electronic gadgets among the students?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the level of electronic gadget uses and

the academic performance of the students?

4. What is the implication of the study to the usage of electronic gadgets and

academic performance?
Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of electronic gadgets on the academic

performance among grade 12 students with Tvl Strand on Dapdap High School, at

San Nicolas, Dapdap, Bamban, Tarlac during the school year 2021-2022. The Grade

12 with Tvl strand of Dapdap High School are the respondents of this study. This

study is delimited by finding out the basic profile of the respondents and the good and

bad effects of Electronic Gadgets on their Academic Performance.

Significance of the Study

The research study is titled “The Impact of Electronic Gadgets on the Academic

Peformance among selected Grade 12 TVL Students” that is intended to help readers

understand the effects of excessive usage of electronic gadgets.

To the Learners. The study will help the learners to be aware about the good

and bad effects of Electronic Gadgets on their Academic Performances,as well as the

necessity of understanding the study in order for them to prevent addiction and

engage more on their academics.

To the Parents. The study will benefit them in a way where it will be helpful for

them to comprehend and enhance their knowledge about the impacts of gadget

addiction and also help them be more aware of the common challenges that their child

might facing.

To the Future Researchers. This study will serve as a useful reference for

researchers when conducting new research. This will also serve as a resource for

them and provide them with useful information.


Definition of terms

The following terms were defined based on their conceptual and operational
definitions.

Electronic Gadget -.are specialized electronic devices that require a form of

electric power to operate.(edgearticles.com) This are a piece of electronic equipment

that has a particular purpose and modern gadgets are sources that help to simplify our

daily tasks.(youth4work.com)

Academic Performance - is the measurement of students achievement across

various academic subjects (ballotpedia.org).It is used as a measure in this research to

assess how well students satisfy the standards required out in their studies.

Students - is primarily a person enrolled in a school or other educational

institution and who is under learning with goals of acquiring knowledge,

developing professions and achieving employment in a desired field.(wikipedia.org)

(TVL Strand)

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track deals primarily with technical-vocational

skills or tech-voc. These skills are requirements for the Certificate of Competency

and National Certifications  that every students who chose this strand will need
especially if they are looking for a career in electronics, agriculture, or trading.Karl N.

Electronic gadgets are a piece of electronic equipment that has a particular purpose

and modern gadgets are sources that help to simplify our daily tasks.Harkin(2021)

According to Ohyie(2021) Electronic gadgets are the instruments which can perform

many activities at a time with vast speed & makes the hard work efficient oneT.hese

instruments helps us by making easy paper work, entertaining, for communication etc.

(Positive impact of electronic gadgets)

Gadgets help to fulfill merely every academic assignment and very fast. Students

receive instant access to information sources that help to complete their tasks. Such

speed and productivity greatly motivate them. Students become active participants in

the learning process and can improve all kinds of learning skills. Every gadget offers

multiple functions to sustain any skills you need. Besides, students collaborate with

one another. They are divided into groups that are connected via devices. This ensures

a quicker execution of tasks and promotes communicative and interpersonal skills.

Many students become addicted to the continuous use of digital devices. Thus, they

have torn off society and many of them cannot properly communicate with people in

real life. Many of them get distracted by technology and oftentimes, don’t even fulfill
learning tasks. They get strongly dependent on technology and are completely unable

to complete even the simplest assignments on their own.The resourcefulness of

technology encourages cheating. Thus, many students plagiarize their papers and steal

field of learning in many different ways. First, mobile learning helps learners to

improve their literacy and numeracyskills and to recognize their existing abilities.

Second, it can be used to encourage both independent and collaborative learning

experiences. Also, it helps learners to identify areas where they need assistance and

support. Moreover, it helps to remove some of the formality from the learning

experience and engages reluctant learners. Besides, it helps learners to remain more

focused for longer periods. Alhafeez (2017) states that “using and integrating some

technological devices may motivate students as well as teachers to do their traditional

jobs in different and attractive ways”

Mohd Mothar et al. (2013) has stated that in the selection of a gadget, it provides an

avenue for identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the gadget’s usage, how it

works in everyday life, how effective it is in searching, delivering and sharing of

information and how users are able to control its usage. Many Gen Z users are directly

and indirectly involved in the effective and innovative use of these gadgets daily

especially in their studies and daily lives. However, the dependency on the use of

gadget without control is capable of contributing to problems in terms of socialand


academic.

According to the Balbaguio et al,(2021) The results of their study showed that

the effect of electronic gadgets on academic performance of SHS learners was very

effective, level of proficiency on use of electronic gadgets was highly proficient,

study habit of SHS learners was very good.

On the this study,the conceptual framework that will be used for the research is the

Input-Process-Output.Wherein the input includes the basic profiles of the respondents

in terms of their sex and age.Then,following the process are the data collection of

student’s profiles.After that,we’ll be administering the questionnaires and then the

organization of the student’s responses and the statistical analysis of the data.The final
output will be the impact of electronic gadgets on the academic performance among

selected grade 12 tvl students.


CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This study is made to determine how excessive usage of gadgets affects the students
of Dapdap Senior Highschool on their academic performances.Students nowadays are
getting addicted on gadgest which leads on failing grades and neglecting their
education.

Research Design

The research is quantitative descriptive research design using survey-questionnaires

deterimining the impacts of electronic gadgets on the academic performance among

selected grade 12 students.

Resea rch Locale

This study willbe conducted in Senior High School located at Barangay San

Nicolas, Dapdap, Bamban, Tarlac. This locale is selected for knowing the efficiency

of the said study entitled “The impact of electronic gadgets on the academic

performance among selected grade 12 tvl students”

Respondent of the Study

The respondent of this study are the selected grade 12 Tvl students in Dapdap

Senior Highschool who attended face-to-face class.The table below shows the

distributions of the respondents of the study.

Research Instrument

The survey questionnaires were the main instruments used to gather informations and

details that students can share for this study.The survey questionnaires will determine

how electronic gadgets will positively or negatively affect the selected grade 12 Tvl

students on their academic performance.

Data Gathering Procedure

Our data collection procedure will be: first, we will grant consent from learners,

parents, and teachers through a letter allowing us to conduct a survey.After receiving

authorization, the researcher will took use of the chance to distribute the survey

questionnaire to the selected respondents.Next we will gather the responses by our

respondents and will proceed on organizing and analyzing the data.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The study uses the following statistical tools:

frequency-This will be use to count the numbers of the responses

mean-This will be use to identify the average level of responses

The researchers adapted a questionnaire to Ronalyn C. et al, (2018). To be used to

determine the impact of electronic gadgets on the academic performance among the

selected grade 12 Tvl students in Dapdap High School S.Y. 2021- 2022.
