Electronic Circuit Analysis and Design Automatic Water Tank Refiller

This document describes an automatic water tank refiller circuit designed by John Mompe. The circuit aims to address water wastage issues by automatically controlling water levels in tanks. It uses sensors to detect when the tank is empty and switches the pump on, and detects when full to switch it off. The motivation was to create a simple and effective circuit to regulate tank levels. Water shortages in Botswana farms and homes often result in overfilling tanks due to lack of manual monitoring, wasting large amounts of water. The circuit aims to solve this problem through automatic control of pumping based on sensor readings of the tank level.

ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

AUTOMATIC WATER TANK REFILLER

INTRODUCTION

The process requirement in many industries, farms, hostels, hotels etc. includes an overhead tank
for water, which is usually fed through an electric pump that is switched off when the tank is
filled up, and on when it becomes empty. As such, the most common way of knowing when the
tank is filled is by observing when it overflows the brim. The overfilling of such a tank could
lead to heavy water losses ranging in the order of thousands of Pula per week. These losses can
be prevented if the tank is regulated automatically by incorporating a feed-back control
mechanism, which would be capable of tripping the pump on or off as required.

MOTIVATION

I wanted to design a simple and effective circuit that controls the level of water in an overhead
tank. It will be detecting the level of water in an overhead tank and automatically switches
ON/OFF the water supply so that water is not wasted.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The water shortage crisis in Botswana is reaching alarming rate. In farming we see farmers lose
large quantities of water due to less labour, to manage the several activities, so farmers tend not
to know the level of water in the reserve tanks during the filling process therefore water can end
up being wasted upon refilling. Even in homesteads, hostels or hotels people tend to become
busy and not having a chance to manually switch ON the pump to refill the tanks, hence delaying
productivity.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To design a simple and effective circuit that controls the level of water in a tank.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

To design an Automatic water tank refiller that uses sensors, it will switch ON the pump when
the tank is empty, and OFF when the tank is full.
