Assignment I – ELTM
Teaching can be defined as engagement with learners to enable their understanding and
application knowledge, concepts and processes. To teach is to engage students in learning;
thus teaching consists of getting students involved in the active construction of knowledge.
A good language teacher should have sufficient knowledge of the language and appealing
information. They should also be passionate and enthusiastic in their teaching and be able to
affectively explain the use of the language.
Patience
o The requirement of any teacher is to know his or her subject well. However, in most
cases, it is vital to remember that, as a teacher, you are guiding a learner to new
knowledge and helping them discover the subject you are teaching.
This is especially important in language teaching as many students may enter the
course as complete beginners, false beginners, or have little knowledge of the
language but lack confidence. As a teacher, recognizing what the learner knows and
doesn’t know is paramount. The learning doesn’t always happen quickly. We should
give it space and time to happen. Patience with the learning process is one of the
greatest qualities of a good teacher. Patience inspire confidence in the learner. Having
patience gives the learner the courage to learn.
3) What are the diverse roles and responsibilities of a successful teacher? Explain six main
responsibilities in detail.
Resource Person
o One of the top roles a teacher must fill is that of a resource specialists. There will be
many people who will come to the teacher seeking a source of information, the
teacher is the one who must know how to find what the student is looking for.
Once the teacher has given the information to the students or coworker, he or she
will often have to instruct the student on how to use the information.
The Organizer
o Perhaps the most difficult and important role the teacher has to play. The success of
many activities depends on good organization and on the students knowing exactly
what they are to do next. Giving instructions is vital in this role as well as setting up
activities.
The organizer can also serve as a demonstrator, this role also allows a teacher to get
involved and engaged with learners. The teacher also serves to open and neatly
close activities and also give content feedback.
The Tutor
o The teacher acts as a coach when students are involved in project work or self-study.
The teacher provides advice and guidance and helps students clarify ideas and limit
tasks. This role can be a great way to pay individual attention to a student. It can also
allow a teacher to tailor make a course to fit specific student needs. However, it can
also lead to a student becoming too dependent or even too comfortable with one
teacher and one method or style of teaching.
The Participant
o This role improves the atmosphere in the class when the teacher takes part in an
activity. However, the teacher takes a risk of dominating the activity when
performing it. Here the teacher can enliven a class; if a teacher is able to stand back
and not become the center of attention, it can be a great way to interact with
learners without being too overpowering.
Information Provider
o The teacher is in complete charge of the class, what students do, what they say and
how they say it. The teacher assumes this role when a new language is being
introduced and accurate reproduction and drilling techniques are needed.
In a classroom, the teacher is mostly the center of focus, the teacher may have the
gift of instructions, and can inspire through their own knowledge and expertise.
