Answer Key - Exp1 (Lung Machine Experiment) - Grade 5

The document describes a science experiment to model how lungs work. Students build a lung model using a plastic bottle, balloons, straw, and plasticine. When balloon B is pulled down, balloon A expands, mimicking how lungs expand when the diaphragm contracts during inhalation. When balloon B is released, balloon A contracts, as lungs do during exhalation. The model demonstrates the inverse relationship between volume and pressure. Observations show the student's own chest expands during inhalation and contracts during exhalation.

Theme 1/Semester 1/2021 - 2022 Day/Date : _____________________

The Lung Machine Experiment

Aim: To set up a long model and understand how our lungs work when we
breathe
Materials:
1. A transparent plastic bottle 4. A straw
2. A small balloon 5. A large balloon
3. Plasticine 6. A measuring tape
Procedures
Make a lung model like the one shown below with your group.

1. Take a 600 ml transparent plastic bottle. Cut the bottom part of the bottle neatly. Ask your
teacher to make a hole in the bottle lid.
2. Take balloon A (smaller one) and wrap it to the straw. Make sure it’s tight but still keeping the
hole of the straw. Place it inside the bottle like in the picture above.
3. Close the bottle lid with plasticine making sure that it is airproof.
4. Cover the bottom part of the bottle with balloon B (bigger one). You’re all set.

Prediction/ Hypothesis (to be done before the actual experiment)

Imagine if you have to pull balloon B down while you observe balloon A without touching it. Will
anything happen to balloon A.
1. What do you think will happen to balloon A when you pull down balloon B? Explain your answer!
I think balloon A will expands
Because since there is an inverse relationship between volume and pressure, a larger volume will
result in lesser air pressure in the plastic cup. Hence more air will rush into the straw, filling up
Balloon A and causing it to expand.

2. What do you think will happen to balloon A when you release balloon B? Explain your answer!
I think balloon A will becomes smaller
because when I release Balloon B it means pushing all the air out of Balloon A.

3. Now think about your body. What will happen to your chest when you breathe in and breathe out?

Cita Hati Christian Elementary School-Samarinda Campus Page1

I think my chest will become bigger when I breathe in, and my chest becomes smaller when I breathe
out.
Because our ribcage moves to create more space in our chest when we breathe in, and our ribcage
moves to create less space in our chest when we breathe out.

Observations (the actual experiment)

1. Now gently pull down balloon B (for real) and observe. What happened to balloon A when you
pulled down balloon B? Why do you think this happens? Explain your answer!

I think balloon A will expands

because since there is an inverse relationship between volume and pressure, a larger volume will
result in lesser air pressure in the plastic cup. Hence more air will rush into the straw, filling up
Balloon A and causing it to expand.

2. What happened to balloon A when you released balloon B? Why do you think this happens?
Explain your answer!

I think balloon A will becomes smaller

because when I release Balloon B it means pushing all the air out of Balloon A.

3. Place a hand between your abdomen and chest.

a. Breathe in and out. What happened to your chest when you breathed in and out?
When breathing in, my chest will become bigger
When breathing out, my chest will becomes smaller
b. Get your friend to measure your chest size using a measuring tape (3 times) and get the
average when you:
1. Breathe in: (___________cm + ___________cm + ___________cm = ___________cm) : 3
= _____________cm
2. Breathe out: (__________cm + ___________cm + ___________cm = ___________cm) : 3 =
_____________cm
