MEASUREMENT

WHAT DO WE USE A RULER TO MEASURE?

WHAT KIND OF INSTRUMENT DO WE USE TO

MEASURE TEMPERATURE?
MEASUREMENT

Is the process of obtaining the magnitude of a quantity relative to an agreed

standard.
MEASURING
Measuring

● This is a type of skill that is required in Science. It can be acquired through good

observations and knowledge about how to use the instruments.

● It is important to measure so that communication about any quantity of matter is

clear and it allows us to make decisions based on the end result of the measurement.

● When measuring we use Internationally Recognised System of Standard (SI) UNITS

also called symbols and metric system.

What are the five (5) fundamental quantities?

MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT BASE UNIT

Length Ruler, tape measure, metre Metres (m)

rule

Current ammeter Ampere (A)

Time Stopwatch, clock Seconds (s)

Temperature Thermometer Kelvin (k)

Mass Balance Kilograms (kg)

Length
● The ruler is a very simple instrument that can be used to measure the lengths
of objects.
● There are some common units for measuring length: Metre (m), centimetre
(cm) and millimetre.
● Centimetre and Millimetre are very small and are used to measure short
distances for eg a desk while a meter is used to measure long distances.
Electric Current
Electric current running through a current is measured with a device called an
ammeter. There are different types of ammeter such as the: Digital and analogue

.
Time
Time can be measured using three units: hours (h), minutes (m) and seconds (s). The
basic unit of time is second (s).

Watches and clocks can be used to measure time.

How could one tell the time before clocks
were invented?
Mass
We use mass to measure or weigh how heavy something is. The mass of an
object is basically the amount of matter that makes up the object. The units of
mass are mass (g) and kilograms (kg).
Temperature
We react to something to being hot, cold or warm. Our bodies react different to the
change of temperature within our environment due to the sensors within our skin.
To measure the temperature accurately a thermometer is used and they are
measured in degrees Celsius but the basic unit is Kelvin (K).
Derived Units
These are units that were made during the combination of two SI base units.

Examples of derived units:

Volume

Speed

Force

Area

Density
MEASURING VOLUME
Measuring volume
The SI Unit for Volume is metre cube m3 and this is a derived unit.

Volumes are often measured using specific types of material such as measuring
cylinders.
Measuring the Volume of Irregular Object
Calculations
To get the volume of an irregular object:

FINAL VOLUME - INITIAL VOLUME

Conversion
Metric units from largest to smallest:

King - Kilo

Hector - Hecto

Died - Decka

Mysteriously - Meter

Drinking - Deci

Chocolate- Centi

Milk- Milli
Conversion
1km= 1000m or 1kg= 1000g 1kl= 1000 L

1m = 100 cm or 1g= 100 cg 1L = 100 cL

1m= 1000mm or 1g= 1000 mg 1L= 1000 mL

1mm= 10 cm or 1mg = 10cg 1mL = 10cL

CONVERT THE FOLLOWING
1. 5m to cm
2. 36 cm to m
3. 33 mg to g
4. 52 kL to L
5. 130 m to km
