Question: #1

Find the contact parameters (R’, b, pmax, paverage, τmax and z) for two parallel steel rollers. The normal force
is W = 5[N], radii of the rollers are R A = 10*10-3[m] and RB = 15*10-3[m], Young’s modulus for both
rollers is E = 2.1*1011[Pa] and the Poisson’s ratio is v = 0.3. The length of both rollers is 2l = 10*10-3[m].
Given: Required:

W= 5N R’=?

RA = 10*10-3m b =?

RB = 15*10-3m Pmax =?

E = 2.1*1011pa or E=210Mpa for both rollers Paverage=?

v = 0.3 τmax =?

2l = 10*10-3m both rollers z =?

Solution:
1st To calculate Reduced Radius Curvature and Reduced Young’s Modulus.
Reduced Radius Curvature:
Since the radii of the cylinders are Rax=RA=10*10-3m, Ray=∞ and Rbx=RB=15*10-3m, Rby=∞ respectively,
the reduced the radii of curvature in the ‘x’ and ‘y’ directions are:

1/Rx=1/Rax+1/Rbx = 1/10*10-3+1/15*10-3
1/Rx =100+1000/15=2500/15=166.67m
Then Rx = 1/166.67=6*10-3m

1/Ry=1/Ray+1/Rby =1/∞+1/∞ = 0 Ry = ∞m
Since 1/Rx > 1/Ry condition is satisfied, the reduced radius of curvature is:
1/R' = 1/Rx =166.67
So R'=6*10-3m

1
Reduced Young’s Modulus:
1/E'=1/2[1-vA2/EA+1-vB2/EB]=1/2[1-0.32/2.1*1011+1-0.32/2.1*1011]
1/E'=1/2[1.82/2.1*1011]=0.4333*10-11pa
Then E'=1/0.4333*10-11=2.308*1011pa

b= (4WR'/πlE') 1/2 = (4*5N*(6*10-3m) /π*(5*10-3m)*(2.308*1011pa)) 1/2

b= (120*10-3Nm/36.25*108pam) ½
b = (3.31*10-11m) 1/2 =5.75*10-6m
Note: 2l=10*10-3[m], so l is ½ 2l, N/m2=pa

Pmax = W/πbl=5N/π*(5.75*10-6m)*(5*10-3m)
Pmax=5N/90.32*10-9m2
Pmax=55.4 *106N/m2 or 55.4*106pa or 55.4Mpa

Paverage= W/4bl=5N/4*(5.75*10-6m)*(5*10-3m)
Paverage = 5N/115*10-9m2
Paverage = 43.5*106N/m2 or 43.5Mpa

τmax = 0.304 Pmax = 0.304*(55.4Mpa)

τmax = 16.84Mpa

z = 0.786b=0.786*(5.75*10-6m)
z = 4.52*10-6m
