CET 2010 Analysis

This document summarizes and analyzes the 2010 Common Entrance Test (CET) exam in India. It provides the following key points: 1) The 2010 CET exam was one of the easiest in recent years, yet cut-off scores were higher, with some scores over 160 still not being enough to gain admission to top institutes like JBIMS. 2) Visual reasoning and data interpretation sections contained the easiest questions, with many visual reasoning questions solvable in under a minute. 3) Language sections also contained very easy questions overall. 4) Quantitative ability maintained the expected level of difficulty, with the only difference being a lack of permutation and combination questions. 5) The

CET 2010 Analysis

The stand out feature of this CET paper was that it was one of the easiest papers to have been set over the past 4-5 years. In fact, the cutoffs for the top institutes were also much higher because of this. Even scores of about 160 out of a possible 200 were in most cases not enough to make it to JBIMS. The visual reasoning as well as the data interpretation questions were sitters and the easiest sections in the paper.

Some of the unique features of this paper were the following :

Literally no calculations in DI:
CET DI sets are traditionally calculation intensive. Not in 2010 though. In total, there were 5 DI sets, out of which 4 were calculation friendly (that means, almost no calculations ). Also, rather than DI being spread across the paper, they were clustered together in the last 30-35 questions.

Simplest question type - Visual Reasoning:

The visual reasoning questions were arguably the simplest question type in this paper. A well prepared student could have easily attempted around 25 questions out of 30. The logic involved was basic and even the figures were nice and big with all the elements in it clearly visible. This area played a critical role in cracking the exam this year, especially because it was such a cinch. Students who decided to avoid Visual Reasoning or to attempt it in the last few minutes of the exam would have missed out on some easy pickings; and likely missed out on cracking the paper. Most of the questions took less than a minute to solve.

Slightly hatke Verbal Reasoning:

The critical reasoning questions were paragraph based this time around and slightly higher difficulty level. There were 3 passages with a total of 10 questions. Also, there was no Probably True/Probably False type questions in this paper, which has been a regular feature of CET for many years. COURSE OF ACTION CAUSE EFFECT CRITICAL REASONING TOTAL 5 5 1 0 2 0

Easy overall in Language Section:

There was just one RC with 15 questions based on it. This was different from 3 passages (with 5 questions each) that had appeared in the 2009 paper. All the questions were very easy and attempting almost all would not have been a problem at all. Standard Questions in Analytical Reasoning:

The paper had an assorted set of different types of puzzles and others as shown below. Straightforward Quantitative Ability:

This was as expected with the only difference being there were no Permutation & Combination questions in a set. In fact, just one question on that topic. BODMAS DI(Line Graph -%pass student in sc, com, art) 5 DI (Table-no of student applied for diff coll) 5 DI(Bar graph-production of 3 types of cell phone over the years) 5 DI(Table break up of M&F In management inst and specialization) 5 Data Sufficiency 5 1 0 Individual quant question T OTAL 4 5 Page | 3 1 0

This years CET has seen scores reach ridiculously high levels. These are the kinds that, until last year, would until laugh and joke about. Last years cut off for making it to JBIMS was about 155+. This years its gone 10 marks more, to 165+!

Errata in the Paper:

One BODMAS question did not have the correct answer in the options. There were two questions in Number Series (Finding the odd one out) that had options which were not one of the numbers in the series. There was a mistake in one of the DI sets which was about passing of students in different streams in different years. Most of the questions in this set pertained to finding the Average Percentage students passed. That was not possible with the given data.
