Mathematics Grade 11 Unit 5 Summary: By: Addis Ababa Education Bureau April 2O2O

The document summarizes a mathematics grade 11 unit on statistics and probability. It defines quantitative and qualitative data, continuous and discrete variables, and terms related to grouped continuous data. It then provides an activity that asks students to classify different types of data and perform calculations on exam score data grouped into five classes.

MATHEMATICS GRADE 11

UNIT 5 SUMMARY

PART I

BY: ADDIS ABABA EDUCATION BUREAU

APRIL 2O2O
UNIT 5 Statistics and Probability

In this lesson students will learn

Quantitative and Qualitative data

Continuous and discrete variables(data)
Ungroup and group data
Terms related to grouped continuous data

Definitions:-

Data which can be described numerically are quantitative.

Data which can’t be described numerically are qualitative.
A quantity which assumes different values is said to be variable.
A discrete variable is one which takes only whole number values.
A continuous variable is one which takes all real values between a given
two real values.

Activity:-

1. Classify the following data as qualitative, quantitative, discrete, and

continuous data
Religion, Sex, Height, Income, Number of students in class, Rank of
students by examination results,
2. In a statistics exam out of 100, a group of students have scored the
following results.
75 72 83 69 80 71 74 50 60 45
78 92 90 59 58 68 63 70 49 82
Using the data given, answer the following questions.
a) How many students take the exam?
b) How many students score less than 60?
c) What is the maximum score?
d) What is the minimum score?
e) Find the range.
f) Group the data in to five classes.
g) What is the lower class limit of the second class?
h) What is the upper class limit of the second class?
i) What is the class mark (class midpoint) of the third class?
j) What is the lower class boundary of the second class?

Solutions:-

1. Qualitative :- Religion, Sex

Quantitative: - Height, Income, No of students in a class, Rank of
students by exam results.
Continuous variable: - Height, Income
Discrete variable: - No of students in a class, Rank of students by exam
result
2. a) 20 b) 5 c) 92 d) 45

e) Range 92-45=47

f) Class interval (92-45)/5 = 47/5 =9.4 ≈ 10

No of Class limits Tally Frequenc Class xi fi

Classe y Mid-point
s
1 45 - 54 /// 3 49.5 148.5
2 55 - 64 //// 4 59.5 238.5
3 65 - 74 ///// 6 69.5 417
4 75 - 84 //// 5 79.5 397
5 85 - 94 // 2 89.5 179

g) 55 h)64 i)69.5

j) 54.5
