IR and PI Test-Summary

The document describes motor diagnostic tests including the IR & PI Test which checks the overall insulation condition of the motor winding. It provides tables with acceptable insulation resistance values and PI test values based on standards like IEEE-1068, IEEE-43, and motor specifications like voltage, thermal class rating, and year of manufacture. The tests help evaluate the condition of the motor insulation system.

MV Motor Diagnostic Tests

(Detailed description)

1. IR & PI Test (IEEE-1068, IEEE-112-8.1, IEEE-1415, IEEE-43-12) (FAT,

PM): To check over all condition of insulation of the complete winding. The
test results should be corrected to a standard temperature of 40OC.
Megger voltage used (IEEE-1415, IEEE-43)
Sr. Equipment rated voltage Insulation tester voltage
No (3Phase-Phase to phase voltage, (V DC)
. 1Phase-Phase to neutral voltage)
(V)
1 <1000 500
2 1000–2500 500–1000
3 2501–5000 1000–2500
4 5001–12 000 2,500 - 5000
5 >12 000 5000–10 000
Megger voltage used (IEEE-1068)
1 up to 2400 500
2 2401 to 5000 2500
3 5001 to 15 000 2500 or 5000

Acceptable values for IR Test (IEEE-1415, IEEE-43)

not described below
2 IR min=100 MΩ Most DC armature and AC windings built after
1970 (form wound coils)
3 IR min=5 MΩ Most machines with Random wound stator coils
and form wound coils rated below 1kV
IR min is IR value at 40 C for complete machine, kV is rated line-line

If the IR value (at 40 °C) is greater than 5000 MΩ, the P.I. may be ambiguous
and can be disregarded

1 Class A 1.5
2 Class E 1.75
3 Class B 2.0
4 Class F 2.0
5 Class H 2.0
As per IEEE 43-2000, this test method is only truly valid on pre-1970
insulation systems.
