Purlin

1) 6" ZEE purlins with a thickness of 1.5 mm were selected for the roof design. 2) The purlins will be spaced at 19 feet 8 inches with tie bars. 3) Calculations were shown to check the purlins against flexural yielding, with the design found to be adequate with a factor of safety of 1.67.

Design for Roof Purlins

Using an 6" ZEE Purlins with the following properties Use

Fy = 36 ksi Fu = 55 ksi 6" ZEE Purlins
Self Weight, sw = 2.10 ppf with tie bars
Thickness, t = 1.50 mm 0.06 in 1.5 @ 19 ft 8 in

Design Requirements
ASCE 7-05 Designing for worst case scenario
2.4.1.7 Wu = 0.6 DL + 1.2 W
Span, L = 23 ft 0 in Every
Spacing, s = 3 ft 0 in 3 ft 0 in
Weight of Roof Panels = 10.0 psf
Weight of ceiling panels = 4.2 psf
Dead Load Pressure = 10 + 4.2 = 14.2 psf
Wind Load = -45.00 psf

UDL,DL = (10 + 4.2) x 3 = 42.6 ppf

UDL,WL = -45 x 3 = -135 ppf

WUDL = (0.6 x -135) + (1.2 x 42.6)= -30 ppf or -0.02988 kpf

Mu = -2.0 k-ft

Flexural Yeilding Limit State

Fy = 36 ksi
Mn = FySx = 36 x 1.18 / 12 = 3.53 k-ft
Ma = Mn/Ωb = 3.53 / 1.67 = 2.11 k-ft OK

Lateral Torsional Buckling

The compression flange is continuously braced by the roofing panels,
therefore, this failure mode is not applicable
OK

This spreadsheet is to be used to check the adequacy of roof purlins for a specified combination
of loads. The designis based on the maximum yeild strength (Mn = FySx) as stated in the AISC
Manual 13th Ed. This spread sheet can only be used for load combinations with two variables. In
most cases the worst case scenario is 0.6DL+W, so this should be adequate. Only the values in
the highlighted cells need to be changed. (
