PRE-ASSESSMENT/MOTIVATION

Instructions: From the strand that you want to take

as you enter Senior High School, think of the
three most important things to do in order to be a
qualified student in that strand. Provide details for
each of the three ideas that you stated. Write it on
a piece of paper.

Are you done, students?

Wow! I am very impressed with your answers,

and because of that I prepared a little gift for
everyone…

What you just did has a connection on our new

topic. You taught us how to be a qualified student
on a specific strand.

Our topic for today is about “Informative Essay”

Do you have an idea about this? None, Ma’am.

An informative essay has the same purpose as

what you did earlier. From the root word itself, its
aim is to instruct or inform a person about a
certain topic.

Let us further discuss this. Can you read the

definition of it, Student A. • Informative essay, or expository essay, is
a type of non-fiction that tells a reader
Thank you. Those are the thing that we have to fact about a topic.
remember when we are writing an Informative • It requires you to gather information

informative essay by researching, and referring to
valid sources. Remember! In writing an
informative essay it should not be influenced with
your personal opinion, because there is chance for
biases.

I have here some examples of an informative

The symptoms of Corona virus.
How to take care of ourselves.
How to stay safe during the pandemic.
Very good. Do you think it is an Informative
Text? Yes, Ma’am.

Why? Because it taught us ways to not be sick, and that

is one of the characteristics of an Informative text.
Very good! Seems like you really understood the
meaning of Informative essay.

For the last example. I will test all of you. I am

going to play two videos. You are going to tell me
which is an informative speech, and which is not.
Now that we’re done watching. Can you tell me
what is the Informative Speech there? (student answers)

The first video is the informative speech because

it taught us ways to take care of the environment.
While the other video is persuasive speech
because it persuade us to plant more trees to take
care of the environment.

Good job students!

Lets now proceed to the four sections of an

Informative Essay. Can you read the first one?

Lets identify those by reading the Informative

Essay entitled “The Platypus” Introductory paragraph
 Hook
HOOK: Australia is home to the only living  Sentences
mammal species to lay eggs that exist on planet  Thesis statement
earth. The spiny anteater named the platypus.
SENTENCES: The platypus is a small mammal
that lives partly in water. The females lay eggs
while the males have a poisonous spur on his back
legs to protect himself from other males during
the mating season.
THESIS: The reason why it is one of the
interesting animal on the planet is because it is the
only living creature of its kind. Scientists believed
the first platypus to be discovered was fake, and
the platypus has a bill with a distinct function.

Lets move on to the second section. Can you read

it, Student B?

Now, this will be the second body paragraph of

our example essay. Let’s further discuss this.
First body paragraph
TOPIC SENTENCE: The platypus is the only  Support main idea with facts,
living creature of its kind. This fact is one of the examples, and quotations
reason why they are unique.
SUPPORTING DETAIL: There is no animal
that is considered similar to the platypus. For
example, it is clear that the anteater and the
armadillo are related because they both require an
insect diet and have similar physical traits.
SUPPORTING DETAIL: The platypus does
share physical traits with several other animals; it
has a tail similar to a beaver, waterproof like an
otter, and a bill and webbed feet like a duck.
However because of its ability to produce milk for
its young it is classified as a mammal.
SUPPORTING DETAIL: The only animal
related to the platypus is the spiny anteater
because it is the only other mammal on earth to
lay eggs like a reptile rather than giving birth to
live babies. Otherwise, the two animals have no
similar traits or common characteristics.
TRANSITION: It stands to the reason that the
discovery of the platypus was originally
considered a hoax.

For the third section, student C please read it.

This would be the second body of our essay.

Remember, you can still state another idea by
writing it on the third body paragraph. Just make
sure to follow the structure. Second body paragraph
 Support main idea with facts,
TOPIC SENTENCE: George Shaw, the first examples, and quotations
scientist to study the platypus, believed it was a
fake animal.
SUPPORTING DETAIL: In 1799 a new
specimen preserved in alcohol sailed in from
Australia to Great Britain and made its way to
biologist George Shaw. Shaw believed someone
had sewn together different parts of different
animal he had studied before.
SUPPORTING DETAIL: It took scientists over
twenty years to agree the animal was in fact real
but they did not know how to classify it. Was it a
bird? Was it a mammal? Or a reptile?
SUPPORTING DETAIL: Finally, it was
decided that the platypus existed in a category of
its own. There are three groups of mammals;
marsupials (mammals that carry their developing
young in a pouch), placentials (mammals that give
birth to live young), and monotremes (mammals
that lay eggs) The monotremes is a group created
in order to classify the platypus.
TRANSITION: Later, it was found that the
platypus is not the only mammal to lay eggs.
There are five species of spiny anteater, the
platypus has many strange and unique qualities.
There are still many interesting things to learn
about the platypus that you might find yourself
reading about this wonderous animal for hours

As you can see, its obvious that we’re now

closing the essay. Let’s discuss the fourth section.
Can you read it, Student A?

PARAPHRASE THESIS STATEMENT: The

platypus is the only living creature of its kind.
Scientists believed the first platypus to be
discovered was fake, and the platypus has a bill Concluding paragraph
with a distinct function.  Paraphrase thesis statement
The platypus has had quite interesting story. It is a
truly one-of-a-kind animal because there is no
other animal in the world like it. It shares traits
with reptiles and birds, but it is classified
ultimately as a mammal. It was such a shocking
creature that scientists believed for decades it was
fake. Once it was proven to be a real animal,
scientists discovered so many more interesting
things about the platypus, especially the function
of its bill.
These are just one of the reasons why this peculiar
animal is a unique one. There are so many
fascinating things to learn about this wildly
animal that you can be entertained for days.

And that is how we outline an informative essay.

After outlining, and mapping our ideas, we can
then construct our essay.

Now, these are the things that you also have to

remember in writing an Informative Essay.
 stay on topic,
 have structure,
 transition smoothly from one idea to the
next,
 Be properly developed with facts and
information.
