D. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #1
Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used
in such a way that their intended meaning is
different from the actual meaning of word.Irony
has three types. Anyone who has an idea what are
those based on the examples provided earlier?
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #2 Now, let us discuss what is Verbal, Situational and
Dramatic Irony.

Verbal irony refers to the use of dialogue where one

thing is spoken, but a contrasting meaning is
intended. The key word here is intentional: verbal
irony is not merely lying or speaking a faux pas, it’s
an intentional use of contrasting language to describe
something in particular.

Examples are:

The cake is as soft as concrete

Water is as clear as mud

Isn't it as pleasant as a root canal?

On these examples how these examples became

Situational Irony.

Who else can provide examples of verbal irony?

Situational Irony, Also known as irony of fate, of

events, or of circumstance, situational irony describes
plot events with unexpected or contradictory
outcomes.

Examples are:

A fire station burns down.

A marriage counselor files for divorce.

The police station gets robbed.

On these examples how these examples became

Situational Irony.

Who else can provide examples of situational irony?

Lastly, Dramatic irony occurs when the audience
knows something that the story’s characters do not. As
such, fictional characters make erroneous decisions
and face certain avoidable consequences. If only they
had known what the audience knows!

Examples are:

If you’re watching a movie about the Titanic and a

character leaning on the balcony right before the ship
hits the iceberg says, "It's so beautiful I could just
die,"

In a scary movie, the character goes into a house they

think is empty, but the audience knows the killer is in
the house

The prince does not know that she is a poor girl,

almost a slave to her stepsisters and stepmother. It is
ironic because we know the owner of the shoe is
Cinderella, a poor girl, but he thinks it is a girl that
comes from great wealth.

Who else can provide examples of dramatic irony?
