find the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The lessons are arranged
to follow the standard sequence of the course but the pacing in which you read and
answer this module will depend on your ability.

After going through this module, you are expected to be able to demonstrate
knowledge and skill related to sequences and apply these in solving problems.
Specifically, you should be able to:
 define arithmetic series,
 derive the formula for the sum of the n terms of an arithmetic sequence, and
 find the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence.

Lesson Find the sum of the terms of a given

1 arithmetic sequence.

What’s In

In the previous module, it was discussed how to find the nth term of a
given arithmetic sequence. The formula an = a1 + d(n – 1) can be used to find
any nth term of any arithmetic sequence.
This module will be discussing with you how to find the sum of the
terms in an arithmetic sequence.
For example, how do we compute the sum of all the terms of each of the
following sequences?
1. 1, 2, 3, . . . , 100
2. 5, 10, 15, 20, . . . , 50
3. -5, -2, 1, 4, . . . , 31
Adding manually the terms of a sequence is manageable when the
number of terms of a sequence is small. However, when the number of terms
in a sequence is many, it is no longer practical to be adding the terms
manually. It is a tedious word to do so. Thus, this module will help you add
the terms of an arithmetic sequence without undergoing the manual
computation of adding the terms one by one.

There is a formula that will be introduced in this module to make the


computation faster. Deriving this formula is one of the foci of this module.

What’s New

To let you experience getting the sum of the terms in a sequence


manually, do the following.

1. Find the sum of the first 20 natural numbers.

Solution:
a. By listing all the natural numbers from 1 to 20 and adding them, we
have:
1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13+14+15+16+17+18+19+20=
210
b. Thus, the sum of the first 20 natural numbers is 210.
2. Find the sum of all the terms of the sequence: 5, 10, 15, 20, …, 50.
Solution:
a. By listing all the terms of the sequence and adding them, we have:
5+10+15+20+25+30+35+40+45+50 = 275
b. Thus, the sum of the terms of the sequence is 275.

3. Find the sum -5, -2 , 1, 4,… 31.


Solution:
a. By listing all the terms of the sequence and adding them, we have:
-5+(-2)+1+4+7+10+13+16+19+22+25+28+31 = 169
b. Thus, the sum of the terms of the sequence is 169.

In doing this kind of solution, it is very challenging specially if you are


dealing with a sequence that has many terms. For example, finding the sum
of the terms of the sequence: 1, 2, 3, . . . , 10,000. There are 10,000 terms to
be added one by one to get their sum.

To derive a formula to be used in finding the sum of the terms of an


arithmetic sequence, consider the following illustration:

Starting from the first term, the terms of an arithmetic sequence can
be expressed as follows by successively adding the common difference (d):

a1 , a1 + d, a1 + 2d, a1 + 3d, a1 + 3d, a1 + 4d, . . ., an

Thus, the sum of the terms (Sn) is:

Sn = a1 +(a1 + d) +(a1 + 2d) +(a1 + 3d) +(a1 + 3d) +(a1 + 4d) +. . . + an

Starting from the nth term, the terms of an arithmetic sequence can
be expressed as follows by successively subtracting the common difference
(d):
an, an – d, an – 2d, an – 3d, an – 3d, an – 4d, . . . , a1

Thus, the sum of the terms (Sn) is:

Sn = an +(an – d) +(an – 2d) +(an – 3d) +(an – 3d) +(an – 4d) +. . . + a1

To find a rule for Sn, adding the two equations will lead you to the following:
Sn = a1 +(a1 + d) +(a1 + 2d) +(a1 + 3d) +(a1 + 3d) +(a1 + 4d) +. . . + an
Sn = an +(an – d) +(an – 2d) +(an – 3d) +(an – 3d) +(an – 4d) +. . . + a1

Notice that all the d terms added out and 2Sn = n (a1+ an). If we simplify
the equation, then the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence can be
expressed as:

What is It

In getting the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence. We will be


using any of the following the formula

Example:
1. Find the sum of the first 20 natural numbers.
Solution:
Given: 𝑎1 = 1 𝑎𝑛 = 20 n= 20 𝑆𝑛 = ?
Since the last term is given, we used the following formula:

𝑆𝑛 = ( 𝑎1 + 𝑎𝑛 )

Substituting the given in the formula:

𝑆20 = ( 1 + 20 )

= 10 ( 21 )

𝑆20 = 210

∴ The sum of the first 20 natural numbers is 210.

2. Find the sum of the first 16 terms of the arithmetic sequence: 8, 11, 14,
17, 20, …
Solution:
Given: 𝑎1 = 8 n = 16 d=3 𝑆16 = ?
The last term is not given, so we use the formula

By substituting the given in the formula:

𝑆16 = [ 2 ( 8 ) + ( 16 − 1 ) 3 ]

= 8 [ 16 + ( 15) 3 ]
= 8 ( 16 + 45 )
= 8 ( 61 )
= 488
∴ The sum of the first 16 terms of the series is 488.

3. If the first n terms of the sequence: 9, 12, 15, 18, are added, how many
terms give a sum of 126?
Solution:
Given: 𝑎1 = 9 𝑆𝑛 = 126 d=3 n= ?
The last term is not given so we use the following formula

Substituting the given:

252 = 3n2 + 15n
0 = 3n2 + 15n − 252

0 = n2 + 5n − 84 , factoring
( n + 12 ) ( n – 7 ) = 0
( n + 12 ) = 0 ; (n–7)=0
n = -12 ; n=7
In this, we reject the value equal to -12 since we are talking about
the number of terms to be added.

∴ The number of terms that will add up to 126 is 7.

To find the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence, you
can use the following formulae:

A. If the first and last terms are given:

Can you prove these formulae? One way to prove these formulae is to
use mathematical induction.

2. A 25-layer of logs is being piled to be used on a construction. The

contains 27 logs, and the third upper layer contains 29 logs, and so on.
If the pattern continues up to the lowest layer, what is the total number
of logs piled for construction?
