The document discusses the three states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas. It explains their key properties: solids have a definite shape and volume, liquids have a definite volume but not shape, and gases have no definite shape or volume. It also describes how changing the temperature can cause changes in state, through processes like melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.

(Matter)

States of Matter
 Different materials have different properties. Each material has
its unique properties. But these properties can change depending
on the state of the material.
 Solid, liquid, and gas are the three states of matter. The bicycle
and the rubber in the tire are solid. The water in the bottle and
sweat are liquid. The air in the tire is a gas.

 A solid has definite shape and definite volume. Some solids have
regular shapes like square, rectangle, or circle. Your books, lunch
box, and basket ball have regular shapes. Other solids have
irregular shapes. Stones, trees, and your body are irregular in
shape. Solids stay solid unless something, like a change in
temperature, changes them.

 A liquid has definite volume but not a definite shape. A liquid

takes the shape of the container that holds it. Shampoo, vinegar,
fruit juice, and condensed milk are liquids.

o Liquids, like solids, are made up of different materials

so they have different properties. Some liquids such
as water, vinegar and fruit juice are smooth and light.
When you pour them, they easily flow. They are called
fluids liquids. Some liquids such as shampoo, condensed
milk, and syrup are thick and sticky. When you pour
them, they do not easily flow. They are viscous
liquids.

 A gas has no definite shape or volume. A gas flows easily and

takes shape of the container that holds it. When you blow a
balloon, the air spreads out to fill up the space in the balloon. Air
also takes the shape of the balloon. Gas inside a gas tank is
compressed under high pressure. Compressed cooking gas inside a
tank can cook a lot of food.

Changes in State of Matter

 Taking away or adding heat can change the state of matter. A
change of state occurs when matter changes from one state to
another.
 A liquid becomes solid when it is placed inside a freezer because
heat energy is removed. Particles of the liquid slow down and get
very close together. Freezing or solidification is a change from
liquid to solid. Juice in a plastic container can turn into ice candy
when placed in a freezer. Freezing point is the temperature at
which a liquid turns to solid. The freezing point of water is 0⁰C
(32⁰F).
 When an ice cube is taken out of the freezer, it absorbs heat
energy and begins to melt. Melting or fusion is a change from solid
to liquid. Melting is the opposite of freezing. Particles speed up
until they overcome the attractions that hold them in place. The
melting point of a solid is the temperature at which it turns into
liquid. The melting point of ice is 0⁰C (32⁰F) – the same as the
freezing point of water.
 A liquid does not have to boil to become a gas. Just like the
experiment where the alcohol on your palm disappeared because it
absorbed heat energy from your palm and turned into a gas.
Particles speed up. Particles that gain enough energy enter the
air as vapor or gas. This is called evaporation. On a hot day the
sweat on your skin evaporated. Every day, water from river, lakes,
oceans, and other bodies of water absorbs heat, evaporates, and
becomes water vapor.
 When a gas is cooled it gives off heat, and its particles slow
down and change back to liquid. This is called condensation. This
is illustrated with the experiment of a jar containing an ice. The
water vapor in air condensed on the cold surface of the jar and it
became wet. Condensation also occurs when dew forms from the
water vapor in air on a cold morning.
 Some solids do not melt. They change directly to gas without
passing through the liquid state. This change is called
sublimation. Examples of solids that sublime are dry ice,
mothballs, and car and bathroom deodorizers.

Pangngalan
 Ang pangngalan ay bahagi ng pananalita na nagbibigay-ngalan
sa tao, bagay, hayop, pook, o pangyayari. May dalawang uri

Pambalana Pantangi
ina Nanay Nena
ama Tatay Jose
kapitbahay Mang Pedro
guro Bb. Natividad
pasyalan Luneta
siyudad Quezon
probinsiya Batangas
okasyon Araw ng Kagitingan
pangyayari Pista ng Sto. Niño
