Quarter 0 – Module 3:
Perform Mensuration and Calculation
(Select Measuring Instruments)
Introductory Message
For the teacher:

Welcome to the TLE 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Calculation and
Mensuration.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

Hello my dear Teachers of learning. You are lucky to have this learning
material which can easily deliver the lesson for our learners, enhance their
knowledge on specific learning competency and help them achieve our
learning objectives. Please tell our learners to read, understand, analyze and
answer all the activities and questions seriously as this material is designed
and made for them. Inform also our learners to take some precautionary
measures and some activities need extra care. Don’t go beyond our objectives
and main goal for our learners. As a facilitator let us be an agent to let them
love learning through this module.

As a teacher, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

ii
For the learner:

Welcome to the TLE 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Calculation and
Mensuration.
The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

iv
What I Need to Know

Hello! I hope you have a nice day! This module will introduce you to the
concepts and principles in performing measurements and calculation in creating
illustrations.

Measuring tools are used for the purpose of measuring dimensions,

implementing any work with precision. The measuring tools are used largely for
carrying out different types of measurements. These are essential for examining a
finished product or semi-product. Measurements taken must be accurate.

This is based on Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs)

1. Select measuring instruments;

1.1. interpret object or component to be measured according to the

appropriate regular geometric shape;

1.2. select measuring tools appropriate to the object to be measured based

on job requirements;

1.3. obtain correct specification from relevant sources;

1.4. select appropriate measuring instruments according to job

requirements;

1.5. use alternative measuring tools without sacrificing cost and quality of
work.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. select different measuring instruments appropriate to the given

tasks;

2. interpret object to be measured according to the appropriate regular

geometric shape; and

3. use alternative measuring tools without sacrificing cost and quality

of work.

What is It

Illustration is a task that demands skilled work. The illustrator must be

careful and patient and must have the right tools to work with. Those instruments
will help the illustrator to produce accurate and neat work.
As alternative tool, many drafters are turning to computers to aid them in
preparing drawings because computers are both fast and versatile. The most widely
used kinds of programs are called computer aided drafting, or CAD. These
programs allow the drafter to produce a drawing on the computer screen.

MEASURING INSTRUMENTS USED FOR MANUAL ILLUSTRATION

Set of Squares are used for drawing

vertical and oblique lines.

T-square is used as guide in drawing

horizontal lines.

Compass is used to draw circles,

arcs, radii and parts of many
symbols.

6
Ruler is a short measuring
instruments most commonly 12”,
and are most useful for measuring
the length of small objects.

Protractor is used to form

angles that cannot be made
with the triangles. Angles
from 0° to 180° are marked
on the semicircular edge.

Divider is similar to compass in

construction, it is used for
dividing distances into a
number of equal parts by the
trial-and-error method.

Triangular Scale its main purpose is

to reproduce the dimension in full
size or to reduce or enlarge them on
a drawing. Scales help a drafter
keep the proportions accurate.
