HEED, J.C. DOB: April 23, 1862 (Hacketstown, NJ) DOD: February 12, 1908 (Newark, NJ) John Clifford Heed was born on April 23, 1862, during the American Civil War. He joined the newly-formed Hackettstown Cornet Band at the age of nine or ten and not many years thereafter became the group's director. The young Heed became a skilled performer on the cornet and the piano and also played the violin and many band instruments. At the age of 23, Heed composed his most famous march, In Storm and Sunshine. The "Gay 90s" marked a prosperous period in Heed's life. He went to Newark, New Jersey, about 1891 to be solo cornetist with Voss' First Regiment Band, New Jersey National Guard. This band, which dated back to the post-Civil War years, was extremely popular in the Newark area. Heed became more successful as a composer, with many of his works appearing in the catalogs of such noted publishers as Mace Gay, Harry Coleman, Wurlitzer, and Carl Fischer. The turn of the century brought about a change in his fortune; at this time he was stricken with tuberculosis. Though he continued composing, his career as a cornetist ended. He died in a Newark 1 hospital on February 12, 1908, two months short of his 46th birthday.

In Storm and Sunshine (march), one the most enduring circus marches, was written by John Clifford Heed (1862-1908) and published by Squire in 1885. Heed was a gifted young cornetist and bandmaster from Hackettstown, New Jersey. Composed when he was only 23, it is uncertain whether In Storm and Sunshine was created specifically for a circus, but has none the less 2 established itself as a circus favorite and stands as the best known of Heeds 60 marches. There have been at least 9 editions published.
