Played by many bands inthis country and around the world for a number of years, it has became standard repertoire. This arrangement is an attempt to bring the excitement of that piece to younger bands, as wel, in @ somewhat simplified and updated version ‘The conductor should establish the indicated tempo and not lt it slow down, especially during the sofier sections. The low woodwinds and brasses should dominate the sound atthe beginning, being, careful not to let the instruments playing “static” notes overpower the moving parts. Strive at m. 16 to keep the counter-melody in the alto saxophones and baritones balanced under the melody. [Also strive fora subite dynamic contrast when moving fromm. 23 to m. 24 and again from m. 34 tom. 35. There should also be as much dynamic contrast as possible between the sections at m. 48 and m, 66, Throughout the piece make sure that notes that are not slurred are played in a crisp marcato style, Biography (Gary Fagan was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. He completed his undergraduate work at Bridgewater College (VA) with a degree in Music Education in 1973 and began teac middle and high school choral musi in Louisa County Virginia. He received a masters degree in music education from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1975 he became a band instructor in Albemarle County, Virginia where he is stil teaching at J.T. Henley Middle School with his wife, Phyllis, who is the choral director, In 1989 Mr, Fagan was elected Central Virginia Outstanding Middle School Teacher by the University of Virginia Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. He received an Outstanding Educator ‘Award from the Virginia Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts in 1999. In 2001, hie received the outstanding educator award from the Piedmont Council of the Arts, He has also ‘been twice listed in “Who's Who Among America's Teachers.” Mr. Fagan is uetive in the Musie Educators National Conference and the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. He is also a member of A.S.C.AP, the Percussive Arts Society, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters fraternity, and the National Band Association He is a percussionist withthe Charlottesville Municipal Band and also serves as the assistant director of that organization, He is active asa clinician and adjudicator in addition to composing and arranging for band, Gary has had over thirty-five compositions for concert band published by Heritage Music Press, MSB Publishing Co., Grand Mesa Music Publishers, Dachn Musie Publications, Ludwig Music, Alfred Publishing and Boosey and Hawkes. Eight of these have been performed atthe prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.
