Science7 Lasq4 Week-3.5

1. The document provides information about land and sea breezes, monsoons, and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) through learning activities and questions. 2. It explains that solar heating causes differences in air pressure and temperature that drive atmospheric phenomena like breezes and monsoons. On land, air heats up faster than over water and cools off more at night. 3. Key concepts covered include how warm air rises and cool air sinks, causing land and sea breezes; how monsoons are wind systems that bring rainfall to areas like the Philippines; and how the ITCZ forms a low pressure zone at the equator as trade winds converge.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Grade 7-Science Quarter 4

I. Learning Skills from the MELCs

 Account for the occurrence of land and sea breezes, monsoons,
and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) (S7ES-IVf-7)

II. Introductory Concept

Solar Energy or the heat coming from the
Sun is a vital source of power that drives these common
atmospheric phenomena.
There are various natural processes in the
atmosphere that is answerable for the different
atmospheric phenomena such as Land and Sea Breeze,
Monsoons and Intertropical Convergence Zone. To be
able to understand why the wind blows, why monsoons
occur
and the truth behind the so-called Intertropical Convergence Zone, we should
start by asking what happens when air is heated?

III. Activities
A. IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE!

Directions: Look at the given picture and answer

the questions after.

Questions:
1. What will happen to the air inside the bag
when placed under a flame or a hair dryer?

2. What will happen if the bag is released after

it was placed under the flame or a hair dryer?

3
B. RISE AIR RISE!
Directions: Look at the give diagram and answer the questions after.

Question:

1. What will happen to the smoke when it is placed near

the hole?

C. LAND BREEZE OR SEA BREEZE

Directions: Using the diagrams below, draw in the movement of the wind using arrows
to show land breeze and sea breeze. Label where there are areas of low pressure and
areas of high pressure. Answer the following questions below.

1. Why is the land significantly warmer in the daytime when compared to the
ocean? Answer:

2. Why is the land significantly cooler at night when compared to the ocean?
Answer:

4
D. GIVE ME SOME MONSOONS!

Directions: Study the given maps below. Encircle the location of the Philippines by
using a colored marker or pen. It shows the air pressure and direction of winds in
different parts of the world in January and July. Low-pressure areas are marked by L
and high-pressure areas are marked by H. Broken lines with arrowheads show the
direction of the wind. Answer the questions after.

5
Questions:

1. Select a low-pressure area and study the direction of the winds around it. Do
the winds move toward the low-pressure area or away from it?

2. Pick a high-pressure area and study the direction of the winds around it. Do
the winds move toward the high-pressure area or away from it?

3. Look at the wind direction near the Philippine area. From what direction does
the wind blow near the Philippines in January?

4. Observe the wind direction near the Philippine area. From what direction does
the wind blow in the vicinity of the Philippines in July?

6
E. THE INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE (ITCZ)

Directions: Study the given pictures below and answer the questions that follows.

Questions:

1. How can you describe the movement of the arrows in the diagram?

2. What do you think is formed in the middle portion of the picture of the Earth at the left
part?

3. What do you call this phenomenon?

4. Does this phenomenon affect the Philippines? How?

IV. ABSTRACTION

Warm air rises. During the day, the surface of the Earth becomes warm because of the
Sun. Some parts of the Earth will warm up more quickly than others. Naturally, the air above
the warmer surfaces will also become warm. It will move toward the place where warm air is
rising. Air moves toward the place where warm air is rising.
The land heats up faster than the water. Warm air (low pressure) rises, cool air (high
pressure) sinks. Breeze is a gentle wind. It changes directions at different times of the day.

7
MONSOONS are wind systems that bring abundant rainfall. It has two types: Northeast
monsoon (amihan) and Southwest monsoon (habagat).
ITCZ or the Intertropical Convergence Zone develops due to the convergence or meet
up of the air from the North and South of the equator. Warm air in the equatorial region will rise
and Northeast and Southeast trade winds will replace the rising warm air, also known as
doldrums, results in a low-pressure zone at the equatorial region.

V. APPLICATION

Directions: Read each statement carefully and answer the given questions.

1. If you happen to be at the seashore of the Legazpi Boulevard at night, what kind of
breeze do you feel?
2. How do you think monsoons affect our fishermen in the city?

3. Are monsoons beneficial to our farmers in the province of Albay? How?

4. Why do you think the Philippines is always affected by the ITCZ?
