Dyer JSA - Brazing Copper

This document provides a job safety analysis for brazing copper. It outlines 8 steps for the process: 1) Cutting pipe; 2) Ensuring proper fit; 3) Cleaning surfaces; 4) Fluxing parts; 5) Using phosphorus-bearing filler metal when brazing copper to copper; 6) Assembling parts for brazing; 7) Brazing the assembly using nitrogen purge; 8) Cleaning the brazed joint. Potential hazards are identified for each step such as burns, dermal exposure, and flying debris. Safe work practices like wearing proper PPE (gloves, eyewear, fire resistant clothing) are recommended to mitigate the risks.

BASIC JOB STEPS POTENTIAL HAZARDS SAFE JOB PRACTICES
Step 1. Cutting the pipe to length - Laceration - Wear proper hand protection- cut resistant gloves
making sure its cut square and - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
burrs are removed. Type K/L pipe.
Step 2. Good fit and proper clearance - Laceration - Wear proper hand protection- cut resistant gloves
between components are achieved by - Pinch - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
sliding pipe end into fitting checking
that fit is close and is an easy slip fit.
Step 3. . Cleaning the metals that - Debris in eyes - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
are contaminated with oils, dirt, etc
so the filler metals will not adhere
to them and cause joint to fail.
Step 4. Fluxing the parts to protect - Dermal exposure - Wear proper gloves when using flux
the joint surface from oxides during - Wash hands after using flux with cleaning agent and water
heating. - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
Step 5. . When brazing copper to - Dermal exposure - Wear proper work gloves
copper flux can be eliminated by - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
using a phosphorous bearing filler
metal to act as the fluxing agent.
Step 6. Assemble for brazing by - Dermal exposure - Wear proper work gloves
alignment and supported parts - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
before heating and brazing the
joints. Any open pipe not being
brazed needs to remain capped.
Step 7. Brazing the assembly is a - Burns - Wear fire resistant gloves and clothing
two part process of heating the - Explosive - Wear proper eye and face and head protection- shaded eyewear
base metals and then applying the - Fire - Check hose connections for tightness on Acetylene gas cylinder
filler metal to the joint. Nitrogen - Fumes - Have fire extinguisher readily available
purge must be maintained until - Radiation exposure - Provide ventilation during brazing process and respiratory protection
joint is cool to touch to prevent the - Flying hot debris - Remove combustibles from immediate work area
formation of scale within pipe.

Step 8. Cleaning the brazed joint is - Abrasion - Wear proper hand protection- gloves
normally not required except when - Dermal exposure - Was hands after cleaning joint brazed
flux has been used and may need - Flying debris - Wear proper eye and face and head protection
to remove flux residue by a hot
water wash by brushing or
swabbing or even a wire brush.
