Striking Tools

A striking tool is a very basic hand tool consisting of a weighted head attached to a handle.
Mallets and various types of hammers are generally used as striking tools in
carpentry shop. A hammer delivers a sharp blow, its steel face being likely to damage
the chisel handle whereas the softer striking surface such as mallet will give better
result. Some of important such tools are mentioned below.

1) Ball Pein hammer :- This hammer is sometimes called engineers or mechanics hammer.
Ball pein hammer is used for forming the head of the rivet by spreading the shank of the rivet.
(for Riveting Purpose). It is also used for general purpose work. It consist of Ball pein, pein
neck, cheek, eye hole, face and handle. The handle is fitted in the eye hole by using a wedge,
to avoid removal of the handle from the eye hole. The face and ball pein is hardened by using
heat treatment operation. The head of hammer is made from alloy steel and handle is made
from wood.

2) Claw hammer :- The head of this hammer has a cut in the center and bent in a sharp curve.
This hammer is used for pulling out the nails from the wood with the help of claw head and for
striking the nails in the wood. It consist of claw head, neck, cheek, eye hole, face and handle.
The claw is used as a lever, it has a notch which is used to lever out nails from timber. The claw
is inserted under the head of the nail, so that it holds, this can take a little jiggling about. The
nail is then levered out by pulling back on the handle and using the curve of the claw as the
fulcrum. The face and claw head is hardened by using heat treatment operation. The handle is
fitted in the eye hole by using a wedge, to avoid removal of the handle from the eye hole. The
head of hammer is made from alloy steel and handle is made from wood.
3) Mallet :- Mallet is made from Hard wood. It is round or rectangular in shape. The striking face
is made flat in order to strike the object better. It is used to give light blows on tools having
wooden handles like chisels and gouges. There are two types of mallets a) Indian mallet b)
Foreign Mallet.

Safety Precautions :-
1) Use proper hammer for particular work.
2) Check head of hammer whether it is properly fitted along with the handle by using wedge.
3) The claw head and face of the hammer must be free from oil and grease.
4) Hold the handle of hammer firmly while doing work.
